FREE Course: Quick'n Simple Tank AI in Godot - In LESS than ONE HOUR: rdfn.one/w6jtNy AI Basics Webinar: rdfn.one/WNFNTW Later Edit: Thanks @Christian Sasso for pointing out that when comparing Flax to Unity, the price of unity is Per Seat. That means, if you have a bigger team, Flax would be the engine that takes less revenue from your game.
@ChristianSasso

To be fair, with Unity you have to spend that amount on a per developer basis: if you are part of a larger company, your $100k game was likely not made by a single person, so all of them have to pay whatever you are saying is the yearly cost. Since $8,000/$1.800 is about 4.4, if you have more than 4 developers, then Flex is a better deal. Not bashing Unity, just sharpening the argument about the actual costs for making a game being part of a larger company.
@RedefineGamedev
3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for pointing that out! Yes, I was considering one developer and wrapping it in "very lucky" to get $100k / year. I need to address this in the description, to not create confusion.

There's an error in your calculation regarding the cost of Flax licence. If you read EULA carefully: "[...] no royalty is owed on the following forms of revenue: 1. The first $25,000 in gross revenue for each Product per calendar quarter;" This means that to calculate royalties you're supposed to lower your gross quarterly earnings by 25 000$. In your example (earnings of exactly 25 000$ per quarter, 100 000$ per year) correct royalty is equal 0$. Aside from that, very nice video. Informative and to the point. Thumbs up :)

I gave UE4 a spin (now it's UE5 these days, but only 2 yrs. ago I dived into UE#4) and I couldn't even get past it's 'simple' tutorial LOL! I ran into a problem where my light on one side of that example and simple building wouldn't easily get placed properly so it would look good.. or even 'OK' really. Sad. So, I've been looking into other engines which are AAA capable. I am just a novice hobbyist with Rhino3D for CAD/3D modeling and a few other programs for rendering/animation stuff. What I'm mostly impressed about at this point (with little experience or knowledge; first impressions) are 2 different game engines: Unity & O3DE ...B.T.W. what do you think about Ambiera CopperCube & Xenko game engines (I have them just sitting on my PC, never used much)? any good; gotten better?

@ZoKKeRFreAK

This is just for scripting, the backend code is and will always be c++, which I find very nice. Nothing worse than non native code for performance critical code that on top of that is in a language you'd have to learn and otherwise no use for (looking at you, GODOT. With your made up godotscript). The scripting is just intended for high level gamelogic. Alternatively to lua they also have visual scripting which at first glance looks like a almost 1:1 copy of unreal blueprint. They also have this event bus system which looks very interesting when it comes to scalability and concurrency. I feel like they built this thing heavily focused on scalable networked games with client-server model. But in it's current state it's a barely usable dumpster fire. Good luck even installing it - i wasn't able to.

The asset store that keeps their engine popular is fragmenting more and more as Unity modularizes itself (poorly by the way), and Unreal is eating more and more of the beginner user market every week with a much higher quality editor, far more advanced built in tools, and a much more indie friendly revenue sharing model.

Players do not want to change stores not only because of their library, but also because Steam includes within its system the Steam Workshop that allows the installation of mods in a simple and comfortable way, it also includes the possibility of publishing reviews. Also, the start of the Epic Games store was not in the most appropriate way, releases like Metro Exodus only raised the hated of the players towards Epic Games. In addition, Tecent Games has a good part of the shares of Epic Games and for many players Tecent is the Disney of the video game industry. Which doesn't help.
