Hi! Quick question, are you concerned that predators like hawks or owls will get the babies? The top of the pen doesn’t have any protection.
@apothocareon7521
3 жыл бұрын
They actually have addressed this in some past videos. One of the structures has a faux owl sitting on it, and the height of the fence around the smaller birds makes it too difficult to do a snatch and run. Most birds of prey hit the prey and can sit on it but there's a problem if they can't get back out again. Going straight up is a lot harder than it sounds, especially with a guardian dog and adult geese around to wreck the hunt entirely if the predator can't stay up once over the fence a second time.

I had a gander who became aggressive after loosing his mate. I bought 6 goslings from a friend. I then closed the gander and goslings in the box stall hoping he would bond with them. He was aggressive with the littles, so I put a box in the stall for them to hide. That worked well. After 2 weeks I let them out. The gander left them. So I rounded them up and put them back in the stall for another couple of weeks. When I let them out again, they were his. And he was no longer people aggressive:)

*@Gold Shaw Farm* 7:04 What if you put in just 1 or 2 non-gander geese with them? maybe just for a short while? maybe different (good) gooses each day? Maybe after some days, to make them get used to each others first. Would that make the small goose integrate better with the big gooses when that time comes? Also, for humans it is very important for kids to have parents, isn't it the same with tiny gooses?

Edit 2: I wanted to put this in front: please put a stone brick in the watering pan. Sometimes the goslings can drown in just a little water if they can’t jump out. Make sure the brick is where they can get on top of it. As to the other stuff: Well of course they can get along - as long as they are raised together. It’s only when you mix adults of different size together. Edit: “Okay little goslings” as you grab a humongous fuzz ball.

it's pretty interesting, they see you as mother goose for the first 2-3 weeks of life and then see you as a predator afterward, some genetics at play there. I think since they don't seem to bully each other as badly as hens do you can get away with 1-4 weeks of difference in growth as you stage it and they will flock together a bit like Ron Jeremy and gang kinda kept to their own flock for a bit before they acclimatized each new spring you will have 1-2 seperate flocks while they find their place but at least they have each other during the learning phase

You should utilize the water from the natural spring nearby to keep the pond completely full with fresh clean water. You could set up some type of pump or even a pipeline that could transport the water with gravity like the one in the old barn that they used for water for the cattle. I just love to see the pond completely full especially with fresh clean water, and I am sure the ducks and geese would appreciate it too!

Not that I'm an expert on geese, but I HAVE raised peafowl for 20+ years... I'm guessing that (A) Your incubator is NOT turning the eggs enough (nesting birds roll them 180 degrees), and (B) Letting the eggs "cool" every day is NOT a good idea, especially if that means longer than 20 minutes, which is the maximum time a hen is off the nest daily. The mother bird will only leave to eat and poop during the WARMEST part of the day, and the eggs do NOT cool off much during that time. Keeping the eggs warm ALL the time will NOT reduce your hatch rate, but not turning them enough AND cooling them too much and too often WILL. Not to mention, letting geese sit on their own eggs will reduce the number of eggs you get to incubate yourself, because they STOP LAYING for the duration.

We also have a second flock of ducks, 4 in all, that are about a month old, and I am in the final stages of building a 4' x 8' chicken tractor for them, because ducks=lawn mowers lol.

Now I have to carry a ducket( aka a bucket filled with ducks) from our indoor brooder to our mobile chicken tractor every morning and back again at night to keep our younger ducklings safe. Oddly the adult ducks don't care. It is also making for some very confused baby turkeys and chicks, they just don't get these crazy people always diving in the water bowls.

Funny thing about dogs eating grass is that my neighbour’s dogs used to eat grass all the time. They were a beagle and a whippet. I had never seen it that much before, unless my dog was ill and wanted to throw up. Over the years, her dogs still ate grass, but just enough to not cause vomiting. My dog passed away from cancer, but I’d always see my neighbour with her beagle and whippet, both of whom were still grazing on the grass. Then one day, she began fostering a little dog she had gotten as a rescue from an abusive home. The little five month old pup began to copy the lady’s beagle and whippet, eating just enough grass to aid her digestion and not make her sick. Long story short, I fostered the little dog for a while, when she turned out to be super hyper and too much for the older beagle and whippet to tolerate. Pup became my dog, because she’s a cute little stinker and I can handle hyper dogs and eventually I brought my second dog home, whom she not only trained without any guidance from me, in not just the ways of eating grass, but also toilet training! Now both the beagle and the whippet have left us for the rainbow bridge, to join my first dog and we often reminisce on the ways of XiXi and Bella (beagle and whippet,) it almost feels like culture being passed down!
