The movement to electric vehicles is going to ultimately make all cars “silent”. I don’t really think we need decibel meters because most of the people who can afford to buy cars like this play their music as loud as they possibly can. For some people the included speaker system isn’t enough so they upgrade the speaker system and add subwoofers in order to shake the block. I’m willing to bet that there’s more ghetto blasters and luxury cars than there are in economy cars.

@jeffs6090

It's been a problem with cars since day one. Same with engine performance. Really, only with the Germans can you get smaller cars with power (S/RS, M, AMG). But, in general, in order to get more power and better performance, you need to step up in size of vehicle. And, yes, the luxury interior, you pretty much need to go up in size. If you want power and luxury in a small package, you're almost out of luck. Even an Audi RS3 is still an A3 at heart and therefore not overly luxurious. It works in the reverse as well. If you're more on a budget and need the space, it's difficult to find something. There are more choices for that though.

As a mercedes fanboy and E-coupe owner, I really like much of the design of this car - especially in the interior. I appreciate the unique design details and architecture in contrast to Mercedes' designs for its next-gen cars. Mercedes' infotainment is king, however, the use of piano black and capacitive touch is not luxury. . . it's becoming technology for its own sake rather than for the experience. This Genesis feels closer to Mercedes' last-gen blend of luxury integrated with technology. BMW is even worse with it's overdesigned angles and cheap gimmicks (see the "crystal" light bar in the new 5 & 7 series). BMWs look more like gaming laptops. It bothers me that most people misunderstand "minimalism" and actually prefer clean contemporary design and build quality that's not busy or overdesigned. Tesla truly has a minimalist interior. Mercedes & BMW should not follow. This G90 is more the perfect blend of technology, tactile buttons, and ergonomics that I prefer and it should get credit for originality. Too bad it actually can't hang with the ride quality, insulation, and refinement of the E & S classes.

Excellent review as always, Thomas! Regarding the UV-C LED question, as long as the LEDs only work while the lid of the compartment is closed, it should be completely safe, as UV-C light is non-ionizing radiation (just slightly smaller wavelength than the Violet color), so it will not turn any materials inside the compartment radioactive, as gamma or x-ray radiation would. It also cannot penetrate any opaque material, so there is no danger of UV light escaping the compartment if it is light-tight (can be tested by putting an iPhone with the flashlight on inside the compartment in a dark garage and looking for any light coming through the lid seal). I very much agree with you that since it's a UV source in a not fully-controlled environment, there is a small potential for harmful situations, like a child trying to disinfect their pet gerbil in that compartment with the lid closed, which could harm the gerbil's eyes and skin, but that would most likely be the worst that can happen if the open lid deactivates the UV-C LEDs. If it doesn't, then it is a significantly more serious safety hazard, as looking directly into a UV LED while it is in operation (UV light is invisible, so you can't tell it's on, and the eye won't blink to prevent damage) can be harmful to the eyes, even for brief periods, unless UV-filtering glasses are used.

Great review and some very fair observations I think. Personally, I would take this over a BMW (too ugly), a Mercedes (too tasteless) and an Audi (too dull) and save a lot of cash. Of course, depreciation might be a significant cost but most large saloons lose value quickly whatever the brand. I like the exterior styling of the G90 in SWB and the simplicity of the interior. Like you said, very easy to feel overwhelmed in cars today and that's concerning. The G90 seems to blend tech and good useability very successfully. They really really need to offer a leather alternative but that's about it. Great car.

However, people in their 20s and 30s are skeptical about Genesis and think that BMW or Mercedes Benz is fantasy because of Korea's unique culture of flunkeyism. In my case, that fantasy was broken when I rode the s500, g11-730d and the g30-530i. All Genesis, Lexus, Infiniti, etc. alternative premium cars have the same problem. If you take them to the autobahn and drive at 250 km/h, especially on some twisty parts, you'll realize they're not even at the level of German competitors from 2 generations ago or 10+ years old in terms of stability, control, combination of comfort and sport, refinement, sound proofing, vibration levels, etc. Anyone can make a "luxury" car with a nice interior that's good at low speeds. The real difference comes at the extremes of performance. Same with this most probably. That's why they presented the model in a country with low highway speed limits.

Yeah like I said, beginning at higher speeds, control, fun and insulation decrease; the question is to which markets this is relevant. Germany yes, others maybe not

The argument of most people who speak without experiencing the Genesis G90 is just prejudice. I bought and used a Mercedes, BMW, which cost over $150,000. However, the Hyundai Genesis G90 was the best satisfaction.

I'm a brand snob and respect BMW and Mercedes... If it's a lease, i'm going Merc/BMW but if it's a purchase, no question I'm going Genesis. My bet is it may be more reliable or less costly to maintain over the longer term.. Also, I just like the exterior and interior of the Genesis more...especially the interior. The right mix of digital and analog imo..

I personally prefer real leather seats than climate destroying plastic or vinyl seats. Even the fabric is actually made from mineral oils, so it is hardly climate friendly.
@autogefuehl

Thank you very much for your interest in this topic. I also bought cars with animal skin leather seats before I did my research and got to know the industry. The most important thing is: With today's modern materials, you have nothing to lose, just to gain. You achieve the same kind of luxury and comfort or even better while having the same or better durability with less impact on humans, animals and the environment. You can use fabric/cloth, microfibre or leatherette. The classic approach is using oil/plastic as source material. Overall, a vehicle contains about 300 kg plastic. A car seat needs about 5 kg plastic. So the overall plastic share for the seats is very low and it is at this moment the most efficient way to produce a car seat. A couple of litres of fuel equals a car seat basically. So if you want to save oil/plastic, rather look at consumption for energy, fuel and heating and to other car parts than the seat. Note that animal skin leather also always contains a plastic coating for durability. However, long-term we should of course find raw oil alternatives. So going further, seats can be made from recyclables (e.g. from PET-bottles or old fishing nets) or even increased share of plant-based materials (like pine oil, canola oil or start-up materials like Pinatex from pineapple leaves or Desertex from cactus fibre or the mixed-plant-based Mirum, so be seen at kzitem.info/news/bejne/tGeXtI6bqJOloHo). On a calculation base, by ditching animal skin leather from car interiors, the amount of emissions (CO2e) is reduced by 85 (!) % (www.press.bmwgroup.com/africa-dom-easteurope/article/detail/T0403389EN/on-the-market-from-2023:-bmw-and-mini-models-with-vegan-interiors?language=en) - and that is a very conservative calculation. So it is at this moment the most important thing you can do to make car interiors more sustainable. A good example for high-end luxury with ventilated animal free seats is the BMW X7 with Sensafin: kzitem.info/news/bejne/kqaItJ-NcqCjpaw And the Kia EV9 with plant-based oil share: kzitem.info/news/bejne/l6yOy4SHopF-dKA New leatherette materials can be superior in every aspect, even for cleaning: kzitem.info/news/bejne/1m9qv4yAcGSGh3Y More and more natural materials are rising: kzitem.info/news/bejne/z4iJ2Yx7p6l5d6Q Also check out what the animal skin leather industry tried to with our channel: kzitem.info/news/bejne/z4aVqaqCpZN3n34 For seeing how the animals are being treated and transported in the global leather industry, watch this footage: kzitem.info/news/bejne/1aGgqXWjqmOQa3o Note that the footage is genuine and was recorded by a highly decorated investigative journalist in Germany I know myself personally. In a high animal skin grade, the animals are specifically raised for this matter. However even if meat is the "first" misuse case, the hide remains a profitable body part. That means: If manufacturers put animal leather in a car and you demand it as a customer, you give your money to an industry that earns money by oppressing humans, animals and harms the environment, you make them more profitable. Alternatively, you could support industries with your wallet which try to improve the sustainability of materials. Also, if you turn the argument around to "meat is the waste of the leather industry" you realize that it doesn't make sense (and is ethically doubtful) to discuss the primary use of individual body parts of mammals. Mind experiment: You are getting slain down on the street; would it matter to you if it was for your smartphone or for your purse? We cannot change what we have bought in the past, but with more information and compassion we can change how we decide in the future.

There is nothing climate friendly about real leather seats. People who talk about climate friendliness don’t understand the energy cycle between the sun and the earth. All that energy from the sun is going to keep coming to earth for the next 4 1/2 billion years.

Hard to make of it, the busy rear reminds me of a Mercury in the 90s, guess a little throw-back is no harm. The decor kind of matches the extravaganza, but it does reminds me of the silk wallpaper, or that in Boris Johnson's Downing Street 11.
