To anyone with an adventurous side you can build your own King of Tone Clone. Rullywow has the queen of bone. Is it just as good? No idea. It never leaves my board though and I use it all the time. It’s one of the greats. Just takes some soldering, ordering parts and not buggering it up. I went on to make a Jan Ray (Timmy with a mod) and a couple of others. Fun hobby if you like that sort of thing.

My pedalboard right now: Poly tuner, Small Stone nano & KoT. That’s it, three pedals. No more step dance during rehearsals or gigs. Edit: I sold my black KoT in 2018, but now I wanted one again. Since there was no-one for sale, I dug up the email adress for the guy who bought it in 2018, saying «hi, I sold you the KoT several years ago, can I buy it back?». He was like: «oh, that was you. I may sell it». Long story short, he was willing to sell it to me. Funny thing, when I opened the box, my black KoT was now purple. I sendt him a message saying «thanks for the pedal, sounds great. It has however changed colour from black to purple». Turns out he was colorblind, and had owned two. Doesn’t matter, best pedal ever.

King of Tone vs. Prince of Tone? I’ve been gigging on the Prince for around 5 years. Just received my KoT from analog man after a 5 year wait! My findings so far are that I, for most situations, prefer the Prince over the King. I play it stacked after a keeley comp and a tumnus. The keeley and tumnus give me edge of breakup clean tone and the Prince is what I use to push it over the edge. The prince keeps a level of clarity without sounding harsh, but provide a desirable mid range that lets you sing. I find I have access to more dynamic range through my playing. I can push or pull back and really dial into the intensity of the playing. I 100% agree with Mick on this. This is on a strat. That said, on a les Paul, I prefer the KING. It’s unbelievable how night and day the King is vs. prince when it comes to a les paul. Looks like I’ll be making room for both….

Tsakalis makes phenomenal stuff. I don't suppose either of you fellas will be needing a 2-channel high-gain distortion just now, but the Tsakalis Nerve is the best I've ever found for plugging into backline amps and using as "your channels." Very JCM800 on 1a or modded 800/Bogner on 1b, very Dual Rectifier on 2, great tone stack including Presence to fit any amp. (And, as I recently learned from Chris T. himself, "Tsakalis" is pronounced "CHOCK-ah-leese.")

I absolutely love the Kot, no selling. Also not selling the DM and they are both on my board and will be. Another note, I just recently upgraded all my cables to custom lengths and higher quality and the sound and output of both pedals is so much more high quality. Ditch the old ratty cables folks you may just love your pedals more. In my case the Kot had a much more pleasing low gain sweet spot.

Having used both pedals extensively for years...they’re not *100%* identical in sound but they’re about 99.5% (at least my specimens are). They’re more similar to one another than my individual tube screamers are...and of note, I have a standard king of tone. The biggest difference is that the Price is much louder. That might just be down to the gain differential, I don’t know. The important bit is that they perform almost identical functions and they’ve both paid for themselves at least fifty times over. It’s a matter of access. If you want “the ultimate” and don’t mind waiting, get a KOT. If you don’t care and just want the sound, get a POT. Obviously, if you want the boost and drive functions simultaneously, that narrows your options a bit. The one thing I can tell you FOR SURE is that you shouldn’t feed the eBay/Reverb trolls. The KOT is my favorite overdrive of all time but I would *never* pay $700 for one....please don’t do that, guys. Just wait and bide your time with a Prince if you’re feeling impatient.

In particular the Colorsound Wow-Fuzz (available from macaris), and the Supa MkI, a replica of the MkI Supa Fuzz from 1966. The circuit has three OC75 germanium transistors and is similar to the MkI Tone Bender®. Also he makes a replica of the original Uni-Vibe. They're amazing, both in sound and build quality. Expensive, but worth every penny in my opinion. He helped me out restoring an old Jen DoubleSound Super in 2007, good guy, deserves a bit of limelight. Plus how the Duke of Tone is stacked with each of the following mini pedals Wampler Tumnus, Nobels ODR, Timmy and the Ibanez Tube Screamer. The big question is: would 2 Duke of Tones be the best or would one Duke of Tone be best matched up with another great mini overdrive pedal? Or would a Wampler Tumnus stacked with a Timmy for example be the prefered combination. Think it will would be an interesting video.

Tremendous piece of equipment that plays nicely with my AC10. Full Drive or GT-500 on the resale market might be a good look for dual OD on a budget

Tried for a while to purchase a POT, and no such luck due to availability. So a settled for a Wampler Pantheon which I like a lot, but would have loved to support Mike, a fellow Connecticut resident.

I tried to get a 2nd hand KOT (it was listed for $350) a year or two ago but I think the seller sold it for other buyer who outbid me off-record. He just sent me the message it was sold even if we already traded info, addresses and wire transfer detail. The very next day I ordered TWO Wampler Pantheons and still have 'em. And probably always will since if something ever happens to my pedalboard (breaks, gets stolen or lost) I can always buy two more Pantheons without waiting for 4 years or spending countless hours trying to source a 2nd hand unit in reasonable price point.

Just curious.... if the kot has a higher headroom could I possibly achieve that if I ran my pot at 18v?

I've been on the list since june 6th 2019. As of July 5th 2021, mike was fulfilling orders on or before September 17, 2017. Pretty crazy but I'll get her one day without paying double on the used market. Plus Mike has been through a lot the last few years. I'm a bit more into his fuzz pedals anyway. Plus I have a original zendrive with the tube in it I think it gets close.

I have a KOT from like back in 2007. And I think all this sounds the same. And I think my 80s rat and love pedal zendrive and ts9 sound the same too. I really don't get it. I feel like there is something wrong with me

Why do you guys suspect that the sound is different between the KOT and POT, if they are supposed to be the same? Imo, the KOT shines when you have the guitar/amp combo that you want. The amp I was using when I first got it wasn't inspiring, and the KOT did little to help it. When I bought my Peavey Classic 30 (kinda AC30ish) it changed everything. I can't imagine taking the KOT off my board now. Btw, I've been on the list for over 2 years now and I'm still about 18 months away! Great video!

Niiiice! They are definitely not the same. Circuit isn’t the same for a start. Or so it seems!

Two year waiting list - I wish. It's looking more like 4 years for me. But I'm digging my POT in the meantime. Great show guys.

I’v had my KOT for about a year now. I’m not really bonding with it. I find it chokes the sound of my guitar too much like a compressor on the mids.I think I need to play around with the internal trim pots to see if that helps. I think volume definitely improves things. To be honest I don’t think it’s as good as my Hudson Broadcast for low gain stuff.(if you run the Broadcast above 9 volts that is) I have to say though that first Prince of Tone sounded great.

The higher gain one loses some clarity, but boy that compression is sweet.

Pickle me grandmother, ripping some A chords on the Gretsch into the KoT sounded epic.

Until recently, I didn't get what all the fuss was about when it came to the KoT/Blues Breaker type of pedals. The demos I heard made it sound similar to a TS and I didn't like the blend of clean and overdrive that I heard. I recently acquired a Reuss pedal that does that KoT/Blues Breaker thing, and after spending some time with it, and recording with it, I'm happy to say that now I get it. It does, to my ear at least, the clean amp on the verge of break up, really well. It's fantastic also as a boost, but where I dig it is in the higher gain tones. Anywhere between 12 and 3 (depending on the guitar) is where I use it the most. Sounds killer with a Tumnus boosting the front end too.

Nice! I reckon they work well into amps that are just breaking up too. Mick here. Something harmonically nice starts to happen. Cool! Hope you’re well!

If anyone's interested in more options, Fredrich effects do a prince of tone called the Blue Monarch with added volume, treble booster on a knob on the outside and the added compression on a switch. €140. It's well worth a look.

I was able to buy one used today for 140 CAD. I always thought they were overhyped. Even going through my vintage Roland JC 120 it sounded incredible. I’m a believer.
