Those early Proto E8/9 units were real jewels. They had brass-level detail (even operating cab doors) and Athearn-clone drive systems, and IIRC they retailed for only $85 when introduced in the early 1990s. Hard to imagine today.

As someone who is NASA and Mil-Spec certified, I have to agree 100%. Doing CB repair with the gun he has is not a good idea, because it could melt the board - or at least the contacts. So yes - an iron with a fine or very fine point and thin gauge solder (preferably low-melting point solder) would be a grand idea.

The Proto 2000 locos had features specific to the prototype it was painted for and the CNW would have had a Mars light in the upper housing. Hard to tell but I did spot the lower headlight bulb but not the Mars light bulb so if that was missing that would account for some of your issues as well. In addition all those different lighting options are fine and dandy to work on if you're working with a wiring schematic or a functional circuit board from the get go. Trying to repair without any clues as to what's supposed to be there to begin with is a serious stone cold bitch to tackle.

Greetings Everyone, I actually did repair a Proto2000 E8 in which the motor had died! The PROTO Folks over did the chassis weight w/ an additional heavy zinc weight. Also the fancy 3 axle Blomberg power trucks came with real springs inserted and most were missing from use. I basically detached the zinc weight and sawed it in half, & finally removed their undersized Can motor. The small 5 pole DC motor could not handle powering this E8 diesel. I located a recent vintage Athearn SW7/9 motor w/ fly wheels attached and remounted it onto the chassis. The universal shafts all properly fit together to the worms gear assembly in each truck. It ran flawlessly thereafter. If you desire to add Sound Decorder to this Old Gem. I suggest removing the entire Zinc weight that sits on top of the fly- wheeled Motor.

The flywheels on this one are a deviation from Athearn-style. They're huge.
@williamsquires3070
3 жыл бұрын
They’re pretty standard for all “modern” HO scale locomotives from Athearn, Atlas, Kato, Intermountain, etc... Only the smaller switchers (0-4-0, 0-6-0, GE 44-tonner, etc...) have smaller (or no) flywheels to save space.
@dmj-ju9zx
3 жыл бұрын
@@williamsquires3070 Hmmm. Blue box flywheels I'm used to are about 10/16ths of an inch long, 11/16ths diameter, a little less wide than the flat sides of the motor. The length of those Proto flywheels may be in line with Athearn's, but the diameter of them looks wider than the flat sides by a good bit and about equal to the height of the motor. I don't have a Proto motor here, but an Athearn flat-side motor is about an inch tall. So, IF the Athearn and Proto motors are the same size, I'm guessing the flywheel diameter of the Proto E-unit is about a quarter-inch bigger. Of course, I could be wrong.

Do you not have a gauge for the wheels? Great repair job, and I have repaired many locomotives in all the popular gauges. You are right, the cracked wheel sets is/was a common problem on the Proto locomotives. Everybody seemed to copy everybody back in the day. Bachmann copied the original Arnold N gauge drive of straight shafts with worm gears on each end driving a large spur gear in the truck, the spur pivoting on the stationary worm gear as the track curved, in both N gauge and HO. Noisy system in both gauges, but strong pullers. The original Kato systems in Atlas HO and Con'Cor N being very similar to Athearn drives, which if I remember are similar to Hobbytown Drives. And then we have the Lionel system of vertical motors driving and pivoting directly on the worm gear on the motor shaft, a system that when adapted to N gauge on the original Rivarrosi (Atlas) FM C Liner did not work quite as well. They would bind in turnouts. A lot of 'badge" engineering went on too. Athearn built Lionel HO in the 1950s In the 60's Ni gauge: Revell/Rapido, Aurora/ Trix, Atlas/ Rivarrosi and Mehano, AHM/ Lima and Fleischmann, Con-Cor/ Kato and more in all gauges. Still waiting for you to get your first "rubber band drive." Be well.

I’m thinking the circuit board got severely damaged by the shorting out. I guess the insulators needed replacing, the circuit board and wires were damaged… The only scale that the sound, lights, front and back camera, placard and ditch lights would work well is S, O, and G scale (Lionel scale) would be perfect D.I.Y.R. Because some souls can’t go small scales.. Unless you are a really good surgeon.

I had a similar problem with a Lionel O scale 8617 engine with a circuit board that had gone bad. Most older O scale Lionel engines have AC/DC motors that run on AC transformers instead of the DC transformers that HO typically runs on. Older O scale Lionel engines used an electromechanical e-unit to cycle between forward and reverse by turning the engine on and off at the transformer. It kind of had to be done that way with AC since you can't just switch the direction of current like you can with DC. But when the DC can motors were introduced, a circuit board had to be used for cycling between forward and reverse with AC transformers. But those circuit boards are now becoming old and electronic components are failing, as they tend to do as they age. From what I can tell, those circuit boards are not being made anymore so new replacements are non existent. And a used circuit board is likely to be just as old and have the same age problems with electronic components, so they're useless as well. I tried to do some diagnostics on the reversing circuit board, but I'm afraid my admittedly limited knowledge of electronics wasn't up to the task. But I was able to figure out the wires that connected to the track and the wires that connected to the motor. After cutting those wires, I put in a full wave bridge rectifier IC chip (under $10 US for 2 of them on Ebay) and got it to run in forward only mode on my AC transformer that way. Maybe some day I'll figure out electronics enough to fix those circuit boards.

In all your time doing repairs on older units have you come across units with “zinc rot”? I worked on a friends older BLI F7 A unit, it’s one of the earlier red box Paragon sound equipped and the rot was unreal! Once I got the shell off the entire frame had swelled in various places and his problem was that the brass fly wheel was rubbing on the swelled frame so I simply used the dremel to grind the frame down a bit to stop the binding but when I put it back together it snapped! I used some JB weld to repair it. I to.d the owner that there was a lot of problems with it and it won’t last forever and I declined to work on the B unit since it looked worse. I noticed the damage before working on the A unit and I told him I can try to fix it but I may damage something and he approved the work before I began. Some say it was a bad batch of zinc that wasn’t pure which can happen, I thought it may be from how he stored his units since he has horrible house cleaning standards and he had a rodent infestation a few years ago and exposure to ammonia fumes can also damage zinc.

I have dealt with zinc rot on many Bachmann and Rivarossi locomotives. From what I understand it's due to dirty working conditions which contaminate the castings with lead. The impurities cause the metal to react and expand. I've heard moisture can speed up the process.

Best fix you could do was remove the Circuit board and go back to basic DC, all the customer has to do now is buy a new DCC board and wire it in fresh or have you add it in. 100% complettly salvageable situation. Honestly I still prefer DC as keeping it simple makes fixing issues simple, the sounds are just not really worth the hassle and added expense. I'm slowly building a large surplus of HO scale loco's and stock using my airbrush to restore nasty paint and scrape dmg to get them all like new. Just need to work out a really good system for making the stock decals so they are 100% accurate restored.
