I was like, "C'mon, another parrot for KZitem...". However. Don't count it against me. But I'm his most fervent fan now! We had a homing pigeon on a boat once. He/she was so frustrating! He was very hungry (obviously tired too) and wouldn't eat bread, but that's all we got. I contemplated catching him and force feeding, not even joking. Finally he found himself enough scraps beside the campfire, rested on a railing and relieved himself profusely all over the deck. That was such a relief... ;-)

Congrats guys! So, on the Monitor, does one need to loop the new control line around the control wheel and splice it in place? Do you double rap the control wheel? What size and type of line do find works best? Finally do guys find all the underwater stern lights distract from anchorages night time beauty? Thank you as always.
@RiggingDoctor
3 жыл бұрын
The monitor does one wrap around the wheel for each side (port and starboard pull). The best line is the one they sell, it’s a spectra with a poly cover. Other lines I replaced it with didn’t last nearly as long, but any line will work to allow you to keep sailing with the “wrong” parts. I think underwater lights look cool, but I also think that they attract big fish and if a pet falls in, they might get eaten quicker! I wouldn’t put them on my own boat and prefer to not be around people who have them as they tend to be accompanied by loud sound systems. My other issue is each light is a hole in the bottom where a leak could develop. Simplicity is key and less holes is less problems. We have found that our spreader lights attract fish to our area, giving a drier alternative that lets other boats know where you are better than a high up anchor light (for those smaller boats that don’t seem to realize that an anchor light means steer clear and not come really close and fast in the dark).

yes - I know this is a year lated, but. I was wondering when you'd figure out that you need to change the fairleads on the wind steering lines to blocks. This is the third time they chafed through and using dynema didn't fix it. Fairleads are only to change the angle of a line slightly and about 90 degrees as you have it. I started watching your videos recently having seen a few related to the electric motor. I don't know if you have already gone with blocks or if you read comments this far back. If catch up and you still have fairleads I'll bring it up again.
@RiggingDoctor
2 жыл бұрын
I currently still have fairleads for the steering. The fairleads actually chafe less than the blocks did! The issue is that’s just how the ropes have to run and they chafe there. I view the lines as a consumable that needs replacing at a set service interval, kind of how people change the motor oil at a set interval. The oil isn’t bad, but it needs replacing for proper function.
@curtisvillamizar6751
2 жыл бұрын
@@RiggingDoctor Wow. Thanks for the prompt reply. I'm not convinced though. Blocks should provide nearly no chafe if the line is riding over the shiv and not rubbing on the frame of the block. To make sure that is the case you need a swivel on the block and to be free of any force that could press on the side of the block and push the block to the side. If the block is on a line like you have it now with the fairleads but without a swivel then when the lines are under tension the supporting fixed line will twist, the block twists and the line running through can chafe on the block frame and chafe very fast. It helps to also go up one size with the block so the line sits deeper in the concave of the shiv. Maybe try it again. Just trying to help. OT - There are some things you've done that I like, some I understand your reasoning but would do differently and some I'm definitely not sold on. One that I like a lot is the electric motor having sailed coastal and engineless for about 15 years (smaller boat). I also bought an Electric Yacht motor (for a Mariner 36 - NH flavor aka Canning design) which I purchased (boat and motor) prior to finding your videos or even noticing that people had videos of sailing with electric. It is tough to admit but having purchased that motor in 2019 it is still not installed. My lame excuse is its part of a major rennovation. I did start with a lot more battery bank and Li-ion from the start. Back when you put your first motor bank in Li-ion was about 50% more expensive than now and sometimes budget rules. I really do love your videos though 20 something ocean passage videos was a bit much though thankfully most were short. Europe videos were interesting but I too like the sailing and enjoyed the videos of your first crossing. I dropped my Netflix subscription about 6 months ago and you might hear from me on patreon soon. Fair winds. And for Maddie's sake gentle seas.

We arrived in Coral Bay on December 24, 2020. Our videos hover around 3-6 months behind film date but the crossing was 28 days which meant 28 weeks to publish. What is your opinion of synthetic rigging?
@RiggingDoctor
3 жыл бұрын
We have had it for 7 years now and cruised full time on it for the past 5 years. It’s held up really well on two back to back ocean crossings without needing any major issues addressed (it didn’t need a rig tune until after the second crossing). I think it’s a wonderful alternative to steel as it’s easy to repair, install, and inspect yourself. It’s got issues if you want to sail in climates that will have vast temperature changes as it will expand and contract with temperature changes meaning you would have to adjust the rig tension often in those areas, but for normal Cruising where the temperature is pretty constant (not hot one day and sub zero the next) synthetic is a good choice.
