love this episode! and as much as it was a lot of work, I actually loved sailing without the help of any navigation instruments!!!!

It really makes you both appreciate the tools we usually have, but also the nature and surroundings more.

Many years ago we all had to sail without GPS. There was no GPS, Plotter, radar, and AIS. I first sail my Contessa 26 from the Uk to the Med with just a compass and paper charts. I had a sextant, if only I had learned how to use it? We got there in one piece tired but elated beyond belief. My advice is don't do it. If you do, watch systems have to be stricker than normal. If you have a vessel in sight, give them a call on the radio and ask them to confirm your position. "play dumb and say that you have a technical problem" loved the video 😀.

Imagine you lose electric power in the open seas: what you do? You are lost. Learn the art of navigation with the heavely bodies, all you need is a reliable watch on GMT, checked daily for time signals ( battery radio suffice), appropriatre ephemeris, tables and knowledge and a good reliable compass, frequently checked for error. Learn also coastal navigation as it appears you are ignorant of anything concerning navigation.

It has happened to us before, luckily our captain Mara knows chart navigation, celestial navigation and is pretty darn good at estimating our position just from log book notes. But our crew is always a new crew with no sailing experience, so it is always fun to learn them some new skills.
