All you need to flash the BIOSchip on a (non Gigabyte dual bios) motherboard is a cheap programmer, chip clip and some time. www.amazon.com/dp/B01I1EU9LG/ www.amazon.com/dp/B00V9QNAC4/ If you flash the chip with this method you will lose the board specific data like Serial Number but it should get you back up and running. On Gigabyte boards that still wont load the secondary BIOS you can short Pin 7 of the primary BIOS chip to any ground (or pin 4) while booting. This tells the chip to hold, so it can't be read from or written to so the board automatically tries to load off the alternate eeprom. I hope this helps you get a few more boards working. EDIT: You can overclock non K second and third generation (sandy and ivy bridge) i5 and i7 CPU's on a Z68 or Z77 motherboard. You only get an extra x4 multiplier but it is free performance.

Its also not "fair" because if they are that poor, they shouldn't be dicking around gaming. also do you sell those dead parts as "for parts" I see those all the time on ebay, so you can still salvage value from dead components. I guess either someone can fix it, or a rossman type will pick it apart for spare repair bits.

Hey Bryan, Regarding that Corsair keyboard: Corsair has a "secret" BIOS mode on most (probably :) ) of their keyboards that allows for the keyboard to be detected by your BIOS. When your in an OS, hit F1+Windows Lock Button for between 1-ish to 3 seconds, and you'll notice then that (if the keyboard is RGB) the RGB will flash, and the scroll lock light will continue to flash, letting you know your in the "BIOS mode". This setting will last between PC restarts. And, if you ever want to go back to "regular" mode, then do the exact same button combination and you'll back to a non-BIOS-detected keyboard. Have a good day. :)

sorry about the hand written letter, printer was out of ink lol. man my hand writings so bad -.- but hope that i5 gets some use for ya :) It was a few years ago when I used it but I just thought "if it drops the temp then why not". I'm not really a fan of overclocking since it’s generally a waste of time. Most people that do it for fun find them selves just watching benchmarks instead of playing a game. But yeah for a few weeks me n my mate Steve did overclock our PCs for shits n giggles and you can get a decent overclock on it if you have a decent motherboard that allows for non k overclocking. I remember getting 3.8ghz fine. I dialled it back to stock after a month since meh...it was just wasting power. www.tomshardware.com/answers/id-2190576/overclocking-3570.html This guy got 4ghz.

It's been an age since I used an EPROM programmer but I believe PhilsComputerLab bought and used one to fix a GPU --> Ra0T0j5KoAc Unless I am mistaken he is also an Aus resident so you could ask him. If memory serves there shouldn't be any difference using one on a motherboard vs a GPU other than the ROM image you choose to burn. I think Phil would be thrilled to get a message from you ;)

the reason lapping on CPU heat spredders actually exists is, sometimes the spreader is bowed / warped not allowing your cooler base to seat firmly and evenly on the CPU. There are two ways to identify this issue. First before you install it, is to perform the Top method place the CPU upside down on a known smooth flat surface and spin it like a top. If it spins freely and doesnt immediately slow down you have a bad heat spreader. Second, if it is already installed, is to look at the individual CPU core temps if there are any that are running much hotter that the others, you have a bad spreader. Its was never about overclocking in the begining, it was purely about bad production quality control.

@TechYESCity I've had that newer keyboard issue on Laptops as well. It's a major pain when your BIOS doesn't let you use your only keyboard that's attached to the laptop. I had to grab an old mouse/keyboard combo and hook up through USB. Worked beautifully to fix the issue she was having. Fixed it and got her keyboard working after fixing the BIOS settings.

Never doubt the power of the "Bang Job". I bought my Z97X-SLI for $15 US about a year and a half ago, and I gave me blue screen after blue screen. Was gonna write it off as a dud, but then gave it a solid smack on the box and boom, my 4690k found a home worth being in. Also, don't write off 775 just yet. My workshop PC has a Q9650 with tape mod and a HD 7950, and it is still a perfectly adequate machine. The price of old 775 motherboards and CPUs are so low that, when you add in the fact that RAM price hikes didn't hit DDR2, the price to performance ratio is astounding. Makes for one hell of a budget rig, I put mine together for $80.

most of those boards you tossed can be fixed. -bios recovery via usb -bios recovery via flashing kit. -remove bios chip with hot air gun (without burning the board and chip) and either reflash or replace with a working one from ebay. -press down on chipset, if it works until you let go, you have a ball grid array issue. reheat or reball the chip, heck replace the chip at like $15 for the chip (not exactly easy to replace for most people though). -could just put the motherboard in the oven. -replacing various chips on the board or even just resolding them sometimes works. but ya need to diagnose these issues with a multimeter etc.

I have a few things to point out after watching your video. 1.All of the Gigabyte mobos in the vid have dual bios, so if it didn't boot, you still can force reflashing from the backup bios to the main one. 2.With those lga 775 you threw away, i think it's a cpu compatibility issue. Some core 2 duos are not supported with their original bios. To test those mobos, you should grab a e2160/e2180 for best compatibility. (~1$/piece). 3.Oven is also compatible with mobos. Trust me, i have bake 2 1155 mobo and 1 of them was revied. Worth trying! :) Looking forward for your baking vid!

Hi i have been been a loyal subscriber and fan of the show for a while. A few friends and myself have been doing a thing for the last few years where if we upgrade our pc or any component we put it too the side. When we have close too enough parts for a full (a few years old) but workable gaming pc we find somebody one of us knows of knows of. Last upgrade i did my old cpu, ram mobo and cpu cooler went to a young teenage girl who wanted to play games. in the end we set her up with a 270x 4gb, 9370 amd cpu, 16gb ddr3, asus crosshair formula-z motherboard, an air cpu cooler, old corsair case an an older 1920x1080p 22inch monitor. I myself will help as many of my fellow pc gamers with advise on what parts to get as well as if i have a spare gpu, cpu or w.e i will give them it free of charge or worst case scenario get them to pay for postage. It should not be hard to set something up where pc and gaming enthusiasts donate or send their old pc hardware to those who want too game but can barely afford too. atm i have an r9 390 8gb strix sitting in a box, 7970 ghz edition gpu and a platinum 850w corsair ax series psu. all in working order and willing to give them to a new home next time i travel to melbourne or darwin.

09:20 sometimes you can force the bios flash (from second bios) with a shortage pin of the first bios.A dead bios does not mean a dead motherboard. There is even a gigabyte bios recovery adapter that forces the second bios to flash the first one.

I previuosly used the i5-3570 and I can confirm that using p67 chipset or greater you can set it's ratio up to 4 GHz and then via the baseclock you can hit as much as CPU will take on given motherboard. Since I had a weak MB and very iffy RAM modules (4 of them at that) I was only able to hit 4.2 GHz, but I've seen better. Rare thing to see tested online, but I was on a budget and got a bargain on it - so all you love :-D Cheers from Poland!

*For the motherboard with the soldered BIOS chip: Contact the manufacturer and ask if/how much they would resolder a working one for. Should be cheaper than buying another same board. *For the motherboard with the dual-BIOS: Contact the manufacturer and ask how much to reprogram it. I don't know which interface manufacturers/repairers use for flashing, but probably the COM/Serial ports. So make sure those are enabled in the BIOS setup if you could boot to it. It's most likely from a failed BIOS flash. *For the parts that don't work with certain motherboards (GPUs, keyboards): It could be a legacy/BIOS support issue. Like the newer keyboard not working might make sense that they use some specific/proprietary chips inside for saving/loading settings/controls. And GPUs might make sense because the board may be a server/high-end one, and/or the card's manufacturer didn't make the board correctly (didn't properly implement standards and/or cheaped out on components). The X58 board probably worked with it because it's a server/higher-end board and might have extra error-checking parts. *For the first GPU, you could try flashing a different BIOS. *For the second GPU, try using a rust remover (don't know if that'll damage it further though). And also try a BIOS flash if it could boot later, but with problems. It's a shame to throw things away that could still potentially get fixed, especially high-end parts. If not to keep, then to sell.

Well the Maximus VII Ranger is Z97 so the 4790 should work fine. I have a Maximus VII Hero with a 4790K and when I bought it I just dropped the CPU in and it worked. But it had the same issues you had (the first board before I RMA'd it). It's really picky when it comes to RAM in my experience and a BIOS update is needed for NVME boot drive and to improve the stability.

Bryan, you can reset the GIGABYTE motherboard's BIOS!! Here's how. Press and hold on to power and the reset button together, then turn your power supply on if it has a switch. Let the PC turn on, then turn the PSU off. Wait for 15 seconds. Then repeat the same procedure twice. Remember to turn the PSU off and wait for 15 seconds in between, or otherwise it won't work. Finally, when you've done this thrice, let go of the Power and reset button, power it on normally. Wait for it to power cycle one or two times, and then you'll see the BIOS recovery screen kick in. Let it recover the BIOS, and you're done. You have a working motherboard.

For the Skt775 Gigabyte boards the best bet for them is old Pentium Ds, E4300, E6300 Conroe (not the newer Pentium version), and E2160 which will all work with the original Bios version. There should be a list on the Gigabyte Support Page for each board which will tell you what BIOS is needed for each. The ones I mentioned tend to be the most universally compatible. For ones that seem like the bios is corrupted you might want to try the old DFI Long Bios Clear trick. Set the bare board (no cpu, ram, psu, etc) aside with the battery out and the jumper set to the clear position for a minimum of 24 hours, then remove the jumper, put the cpu and one stick of ram in the slot closest to the cpu, graphics card if needed, and WITH NO USB ANYTHING (use a PS/2 keyboard). Quite often that will clear a borked bios that a short clear won't. We ran into that a lot on the Skt775 and 939 DFI boards back in the day. I've seen it take 3 days to clear one.

If you have a BIOS problem on your motherboard, you can still fix it with a second PC or laptop. You have to buy a CH341A programmer with BIOS 8-pin clip from china. Simply follow a tutorial on the internet and you have a big chance to maybe fix it (works on MoBo's as well as GPU BIOSes). The programmer with clip should only be a few dollars. If you are going to clean up the gold pins on any card, I suggest not using a razor or any sharp object as you are more likely to cause damage than clean. I have been in the business since 1987, and I use an ink eraser as they are stiff enough to remove almost any kind of corrosion or contamination from the pins. A stiff pencil eraser will probably work as well but is less effective on contamination but are good for light oxidation removal. Just remember to clean with alcohol following cleaning to remove any remaining scum or rubber particles. I hope you find this info useful. G'day.

I know this is a old video, but gigabyte boards will post loop if someone hits the reset button. If you clear cmos you might be able to get into the bios and re-flash it. Reset trashes the bios so it's best not to connect the reset button on gigabyte boards. I've accidentally did it on two Gigabytes but fortunately was able to get into the bios and flash it back.

That MSI B75MA-E33. I also have a 4 DIMM slot variant of them (which is B75MA-P45). If you can boot it once (by remove the CMOS battery, remove the ATX 20pin+4 and power it once to drain and you forgot to remove the power to drain it, so remove CMOS battery doesn't help in this case, and it WILL NOT BOOT without CMOS battery) and after that 1st boot, you can't boot it to boot screen or BIOS anymore then you have a corrupted BIOS, which it can be easily fix with an USB with DOS, BIOS Flasher and the BIOS file from MSI homepage. DON'T flash it in UEFI BIOS. Flash it on DOS. I use Rufus to make a DOS USB with Rufus, copy all the file from BIOS update (yeah, MSI included the exe file to use in DOS environment and that the proper way to flash BIOS).

I was gonna say... Those boards aren't dead.. Just hung. He obviously never had an MSI P7 Diamond MB. That thing was the worst for that crap. Also.. Most all decent MB will automatically look for a CD\DVD drive with a bios.bin file. If found, it would then write the file over the corrupt or bad BIOS on the rom chip.

It's a beautiful thing all that used stuff to go back into rotation. I was thinking a way to get the deals back into the review content is to go back to new plus used builds. Still very relevant considering ddr4 prices. Would make for a unique take. E.g. Doing a Colour matched sexy budget bling build with cheap rgb in a new case review- New gpus with old boards. New boards with old gpus it goes on and on!

i5-3570 non-K was/is OC capable, you just need the right mobo. I use an asrock z75 pro3 to get it to 4.2ghz.

G31 motherboards can support an E54xx 771 Xeon with lower tdp. I've had success with them.

Pair that g31 with a q9450 abd 4gb of ddr2 and a 750 Ti and you'll have a $100 esports build. Just sold one recently and it even ran witcher3 and bf1 at 1080p low/med around 40fps!

For the 99 error, try a PS/2 keyboard - apparently some cases where it may boot with a PS/2 keyboard and some USB will be inoperative

Would like to see a old Skool AMD build with used parts. Just to see if a good AMD build is still playable with today's games and worth the money.

You could just update the BIOS on the fixed Ranger board and test the 4790 on there

as with most Z87 motherboards you need to update the bios to be able to run 4790/4690 cpus. My Asus z87-k required a bios update when i upgraded to i7 4790K

3570 will clock to 4ghz on Z77 and you can usually get away with a 2% blck OC on top.

Don't put this Gigabyte motherboard from 9:00 h61 to trash yet ! Try to let it boot loop for some time, like 30 even 50 times, because the dual BIOS recovery system on gigabyte boards is stupid, and it can take a while to start! I have seen video when motherboard fixed it self after about 30 boot :D (probably it was on JayzTwoCents, if I remeber corectly).
