52 year old here. I've been playing for 8 years and not qualified for worlds yet, but still trying. There were some great points made in this video but the ones that really resonated where the ones about asking about the game after finishing, which is something I've started doing, and being welcoming in the community and helping new players out with their pet decks. Great stuff.

I'm nowhere near too old for Pokemon but I did only pick up the game at 27. It's been 1.5 years and I've been trying to be more consistent with the limited amount of time I have. I'm already doing some of what Dan mentioned, so nice to see I'm on the right track.

It was a great experience. I only went 3/4/2, but still really happy with it (would have been better if I had matched with any of the many Charizard decks on the day, heh).

Thank you for this podcast, I liked it a lot. I like your GET GUD Academy series too, it has been really useful to me, I'm really grateful with you. I'm over 41 now and I have been playing this game for 1 year, I must accept I feel clueless sometimes, I can win a locals one week and the next one just go 0-5.

Re: weird decks and community building: I have a soft hand locking forretress/Wo-Chien Roxanne/Path deck that I was finally brave enough to take to a local challenge. If it wasn't for the Lugia player I met there theorizing a 2nd Lumineon with me, I wouldn't have placed top 16 at the Knoxville regional Friday challenge about two weeks later. It's such a little thing, but it's going to be the highlight of my season. Especially since I'm also trying to lock in post Ro and go full meta, being efficient with my time, because I too, am an older player at 29, and I'd like to transition from fun deck builds to serious piloting, at least for a bit. Great pod as always!

just hit the big 30 here. Never give it up boys, I just got back into comp a few months ago and it has been the best decision ever. Wife is supportive with the hobby, works well with my work schedule and I can always take a day off to take a trip to a regional. I dont see myself ever quitting card games!

I started playing when I was 25 (in 2020) and I thought I would play for a long time. After just barely missing worlds last season only attending a couple of west coast events, this season has been a lot tougher than I expected. I just don't think it would be fun to grind to 600 CP year after year. That said, I could see going to every California or PNW regional after I'm out of the CP chase for the chance to get in the money and see my friends.

Easy to learn, hard to master. Once you get to the competetive level you start having to calculate in depth the lines and something that is different than chess is the variance, so instead of having an attack where while difficult is possible to fully calculate all the moves, you now have a deeper level of calculation where you have to calculate the chance of hitting the line of play. So while I think chess is overall harder, Pokemon is not far off and is also quite different to chess with how you need to calculate because of the high level of variance making every game different than the next.
