I believe the reality is that, once you've "DEPed In" if they truly wanted to drag you away kicking and screaming, they could. However, the current policy of all four branches is that they will not do this. And recruiters are not allowed to threaten it. They are, however, obligated to attempt to change the enlistees mind, and get them back "with the program." If that fail, they have to promptly begin the paperwork for separation. That's how it's supposed to work. Desperate recruiters sometimes do resort to desperate measure and tell people things like, "You'll go Leavenworth." "You'll never be able to get a student loan." They do this because with each "DEP loss" the recruiter and the station commander get banged up over it. The way it's looked at from the Powers That Be is: "You, as a Recruiter, didn't do enough to keep this enlistee motivated."

Kalissa Schneider you can get out anytime you want. I’m currently in the DEP for the Marines. Until you step foot on the bus and get to your basic training location, you don’t have to go. Yes it’s kinda scary to talk to your recruiter telling them that you no longer want to do it. They may get upset or not. They can’t do anything about it. Shoot. You can get to the airport and decide there you don’t want to do it and buy a ticket home. The point is you can back out anytime. You may have repercussions about re joining again but there is no penalty for backing out.

Yes, that is a trick they're playing to keep you in. At the end of the day you are NOT obligated until you step on the bus to leave for Boot Camp. You could take few routes. 1) Face it heads on, tell them you know they're BSing. Tell them to show you in BLACK AND WHITE paper where YOU MUST go. It doesn't exist. 2) Ask your parents for some back up. They can lie to you, but sometimes they can't lie to them. 3) Ask another branch recruiter. Whatever branch you want to join, ask them for some help.

okay so just to make this clear? ive been to MEPS and taken my Physical and signed and sworn in. but I've been in DEP for a month and am set to leave for bootcamp on july 6th so 17 days from now. so all i have to do is not show up on the ship date and Im good? i have no interest in joining at all now. i wont get into trouble? im starting to freak out. do I have to sign separation paperwork?
@MrYoonKim

The right thing to do is to tell your recruiter you don't want to do it anymore. Then take it from there. Your recruiter obviously will try to convince you otherwise. At the end of the day, if you don't want to join you dont have to. There are NO punishment for you. You still are a civilian. Talk it over with your family and make your decision.

Hypothetically speaking, if your recruiter gives you a hard time and says your going 100% and you don't want to. You do not have to show up for your ship out date.

Roy De la cruz Bro I’m just about to call my recruiter tomorrow to switch to the Army too. I’d say keep bugging them. Call your Navy recruiter. Call their Chief. Show up to the office everyday and keep bugging them. Be pushy but don’t be rude.

in 2010 when I was 18 my USMC recruiter was getting impatient with my lack of run time improvements and essentially told me to quit. Now at 26 I feel I am actually healthy enough to pass the IST. Will being kicked out of a DEP prevent me from entering the USMC? Will it effect my ability to join other branches?
