Great video that covers a lot of immediate concerns of wide vs. Amazon exclusive. Just going a bit off my own personal experience, I've found that the "wide" audience and Amazon exclusive (i.e. KU) audience tends to have very little overlap. I know that when I started looking at my mailing list subscribers who responded to my KDP books vs subscribers who responded to my wide books, the numbers are dramatically different. Part of the reason for that is due to the difference in purchasing habits between wide and KU. In general, KU readers tend to skew younger than the wide audience, and their lack of relative purchasing power means they are more attracted to the KU model to begin with. In contrast, the wide audience tends to be older, have more purchasing power, and are more likely to outright buy a book. What this means is that for someone going from KU to wide, it might be better for them to build separate audiences (mailing list segmentation can work wonders) for their wide customers from their KU customers. I'd love to discuss this with you in more detail if you'd like!

You've been my GoTo for info on publishing my Second Edition, thank you! I've opted out of Expanded Distribution on KDP, and requested a title transfer with IS. Once this is completed, will my KDP listing remain intact with the coveted reviews? And, will my Goodreads Author Profile be affected in any way? TIA
@1MKWilliams
Жыл бұрын
Opting out of expanded distribution via KDP should have no impact on your reviews whatsoever. When you do the second edition you should make sure to add the new edition before unpublishing the first and requesting the reviews are transferred to the new title on Amazon. I go into more about second editions here: kzitem.info/news/bejne/o6-F24qcg4SZeX4 and expanded distro here: kzitem.info/news/bejne/rWZt1I6kpHuLraQ

@@1MKWilliams Thank you for the fast response. Let me rephrase the question without the abbreviations. When Ingramspark completes the title transfer of my Second Edition from KDP, will I still have the reviews on KDP, or will the title transfer break the link to the First Edition? (I understand that Ingramspark will probably not transfer reviews, btw)
@1MKWilliams
Жыл бұрын
@@danielroot6659 Transfering the expanded distribution from KDP to IngramSpark will have no impact on your Amazon.com reviews. All the title transfer does is allow IngramSpark to distribute the book wide to retailers instead of Amazon being listed as your wide distributor.

Congratulations on writing your first book? Do you have any specific questions about publishing the book for wide distribution? I always advocate for new authors to publish wide and not be 100% tied to Amazon. I want to go WIDER because Amazon sales have slowed and the Amazon Ads are not running at a profit; investment is greater than sales there, even with the help of an ad guy! We've worked for four months and not cracked the code of Amazon Ads. Anyway, it makes no sense to remain Amazon only.

So sorry you're having difficulty with Amazon, but so glad to hear that you have a plan to go wide! I think it is the best route for authors to make the most over the long run, but I know a few people who have been able to make it work, for a short while, with Amazon only. Best of luck!

Great advice! I am thinking of doing the same. Question: Can I not leave my ebooks and print books on Amazon as they are, and just get a new ISBNs for the eBook versions which I want to publish wide on D2D? Can the eBooks on Amazon with the Amazon ASINs co-exist with ebooks elsewhere with the new ISBN??
@1MKWilliams
Жыл бұрын
If you already own the ISBN for both the print and eBook then you can and should use the same number for the book anywhere you publish it. It is like the SSN for your book by format. If you used the "free" Amazon ISBN then you would need to create a new edition of the book to publish the same format and trim size with another ISBN. As for the Amazon eBook free ISBN, they don't actually give it an ISBN just an ASIN so yes, use a new ISBN for the ebook when you publish it elsewhere

Thank you for your videos. Im going to switch to IngramSpark from KDP. My question is, will I need separate ISBN for ebook and print book?
@1MKWilliams
3 жыл бұрын
Glad the videos are helpful! If you already own your ISBNs then no, you don't have to get a new one for either format. If the print book was in KDP's expanded distribution you will need to complete a form to send to IS and notify KDP. (Here is the link to the form: help.ingramspark.com/hc/en-us/articles/211155403-How-to-Transfer-a-Book-From-One-Account-To-Another-Account I have a video on this process coming out next week. ) IF you are using KDP provided ISBNs for both you will need to get your own and submit them as "second editions" to IngramSpark so that it qualifies as new content. (I did a video on that process as well: kzitem.info/news/bejne/qYWu2oGecXWcaII) Best of luck with the process :)

In doing some research, I’ve read that doing KDP and IS results in IS taking over Amazon supply, resulting in “out of stock” warning on Amazon listing. But I heard you say that Amazon supersedes wide distribution for their listing so not to worry about that. Is this issue something that was present in the past but now is resolved? I’m trying to get to the bottom of why there is so much different information out there and how to follow the informed person! The last thing authors need is Amazon saying that their book is out of stock!

Hi Emily, Great question. I don't have an official answer from Amazon or IngramSpark, just my own experience to go off of. When I have listed books through IngramSpark only, I've noticed that the Amazon listing will often show as "out of stock" if the wholesale discount is not set to 50%. When I increase the discount in IngramSpark, I noticed that the out of stock message went away. When I add the paperback to Amazon KDP, I noticed that all issues went away as well. I don't think Amazon has an official written policy, but clearly when authors make changes that give Amazon a better deal, this message resolves. For authors planning to list their book through IngramSpark AND Amazon this should only be an issue up until the time that the paperback is added to KDP. (Again, not everyone has this issue). Best of luck!

Hmm okay so if you did not provide your own ISBN when publishing with KDP you will need to provide a new one when publishing wide and set the book as a second edition.

@@1MKWilliams the point is, KDP books can be published WITHOUT an ISBN, so my paperback on Amazon has an ISBN, but my ebook doesn’t.
