I recently read a case study on trained athletes doing a body recomposition. In highly trained male bodybuilders it’s damn near impossible to build muscle and lose fat at the same time naturally. In non physique athletes it is 100% possible and fairly easy to do with a high protein diet (1.5g per lb of bodyweight and up). In FEMALE physique athletes it is also possible to build muscle and lose fat naturally with a high protein diet. The reason they gave for men not responding is because fat loss crashes testosterone so hard. I had a few gripes with the way the study was performed but 🤷♂️

I read a study that found that women’s muscles tend to burn more free fatty acids rather than glycogen(which men burn more of) during submaximal exercise(aka less than 1 rep max). I wonder if that is part of the reason even advanced female athletes can burn fat and build muscle at the same time.

If you are in a caloric deficit, while still managing to get your protein intake high, you can build muscle and lose fat.

EXACTLYY I was waiting for this comment. My diet has a hard time keeping up these days tbh I feel like I’m always on a mini bulk and I worry I’m too skinny to build muscle lol

That really depends on your current bfp. People that are already lean and natty will not build muscle mass on a calorie deficit.

yea...IF you're one of the 4 type of people she mentioned. You can't be 8% bf and drop to 6% while gaining muscle without the secret sauce. Even WITH the secret sauce you don't gain nearly as much muscle as you would on a bulk. Frankly I think you should reserve comment because you don't display anything for me to believe you know what you're talking about.

Yuuuup, it just takes a looooong looong time. Also, is not caloric deficit per sea, is more like less carbs. Everyone hates keto, I totally get why, but I love dirty keto and, it's been 5 years of this and I like the changes, I've never looked to bulky but my muscles are bigger. Not huuuge, but bigger. I don't mind doing it for 5 more years to get the results I want.

Correct me because I'm wrong. By working out... your building muscle. This takes energy... Which means burning fat...? Does it not go hand in hand? I'm not a scientist, but that works for me.
@TheITomG

No, that's really not how it works. For people who train, they need to eat more calories then they consume to be able to build muscles. otherwise the body will burn the protein you eat as energy instead of building bigger muscles.

BS. I’m obese and no matter what I do, I gain weight. I train 3-4 times a week and don’t over eat. Yet I’m still obese. So this is just bs.

You may need to see a medical professional. A naturopathic doc if you can afford it (I was able to at one point and that really helped me ..I had hormone imbalances and other issues. NOTHING else I did helped me lose weight before,l. There's so much info online now though If not a ND, maybe at least get all the blood tests you can from a regular doc. If you're working out and not overeating and are obese you should be losing weight. But it's possible, you're eating the wrong foods for your body type, not doing the right exercises for YOU, and/or have a deficiency or other health issue. Anyway, good luck!

Straight up wrong. You will always loose weight in a caloric deficit. The vast majority of people cann buold muscle in a caloric deficit. Either slow and steady or jumping between bulking and cutting. Try both, see what you like better.

As someone recently out of Cat1 and Cat2, its not as easy as it was. I'm only 9 months in and have only had anything close to program for 3 of those months. The first 15kg went like magic, now I'm fighting to retain the muscle mass while still dropping. I'm only about 10lbs overweight at this point and a lot of what's left weight wise is the muscle that lets me max out the hip abduction machine for 2 reps.

Ive been training almost daily for over 3 years and still consider myself in all 3 of the first categories haha. Im no pro. Im busy. I stay a little overweight so that when I go through periods of getting more serious about gaining muscle then Im already a tad bulked to accomidate new muscle and that tends to trade out the fat as well when I let it. Ill up my calories when I start noticing muscle growth so that I dont starve my gains by staying too lean. And best case scenario, I do a little cut in springtime but it tends to be very intuitive. But yeah Im not in a closely tracked program, Im often going through periods of less building then back up to more intense building depending on life events and I also stay a bit overweight for recomp ease.

Second category. Perfect place to be for gaining muscle 💪 go slow. Maybe pilates to safely strengthen core, pelvic floor and just overall body stability/mobility before going hard on weights. Weight training really exposes and exacerbates imbalances (disproportionately weak muscles) causing injury. 😁

What happens if you're not overweight but have a relatively high bf % (still in the healthy range) OR you have been at the gym but was a lazy lifter and only now taking it seriously?
