I signed up not knowing anything about the attendance policy and politics embedded in the railroad, if I would've known then I'd be somewhere else. We used to make really good money....now a macdonalds manager makes just as much as we do

When I was at the cn in Chicago, training pay was almost 90,000. Most conductors easily made 110 K a year.

I work @ CSX as a conductor. My 1st year I made 81k (got bumped to 100% mid year). So far this year I’ve surpassed that 5k coming around on my second year. I’m not beating my feet everyday, I’m home at least 3 days (most times consecutively). More than which railroad you work for, I think your home terminal and the territory you cover, have more to do with your earning potential. Obviously that information isn’t available at hire, but once you get the feel of the different runs and assignments, you can make some money. I worked a lot of shitty runs that the old head don’t want, but they usually pay the best.

Just started here in Wisconsin for CP still in conductor school & otj training they’re paying me $40 an hour for training. Once done with training I’m bumped up to $45 an hour. They’re saying I should be making $120k-$140k for the year

You ain’t going to make that your first year, I work for cp out of St. Paul you’ll make 110k tops your first year. Once you have a full year as a marked up conductor you can make 140-160 depending if you get a lot of WP trains.

Tell that to the Xtra board conductors!!! Which having no seniority means you will definitely be stuck on call for yrs! But the xtra board pays!!! What is not factored in, is the OT daily after 8hrs..No conductor jobs are 8hrs. Holidays pay double time and a half! It definitely takes a major toll on your family life and health

I work for CPKC and my first year marked up plus student conductor training I still made 108k my first year. Granted CP pays the most out of any class 1. Best year was last year 2023 held the road the whole year and make 227k

Yeah I'm not buying it sorry. At CN Rail we 100% make more then you guys make. Even engineers doing freight runs at 276 miles aren't making over 190k. As a conductor? Went to diesel trade school and got trained as a conductor for a railroad company (cant saw who for obvious reasons) and started at 8.50 an hour and quickly worked my way up to 12 an hour within 5 years. Hardworking mindset accomplishments anything anywhere. Love my job and coworkers

A lot depends where you are and how long your run is. If you are on pool freight or extra board. Where I work our east turn is 244 miles and west is 243. Pretty easy to make a 100k on a turn and I usually get 2 days of between trips . My kid works the extra board and can easily make well above 100k but he works every day

Dude above you says he made 227k last year as a 2nd year conductor at CPKC. CN rail pays more and not one conductor in my terminal made over 165k and we do runs that are 276 miles plus make $660 heldaway for any time over 15 hours in the bunkhouse. Even engineers are not making that much. Some, and I mean SOME are touching 190k

after 5 years you get max pay which is 39.11 in boston for passenger although will be more soon contract been in negotiations for over a year now. although you will be working 6 days a week and 10-12 hours a day you will be making easily over 100k with the OT but it is a GRIND

I made 107k my first year at NS at 80%, of all class 1s lol. Its definitely possible, even with low seniority. Just depends on the terminal. We are pretty much all long pool, no locals. 100% guys are making 140k. ENs are making 160k plus bonuses. And we dont have an attendance policy. Other terminals with NS COs are making mid 80s-90k first year, ENs are making 130 plus bonues

Qhat are you talking about "bonuses"? There are no bonuses on the railroad. It's either paid by the mile or your hourly rate in the yard which is still calculated by freight miles

Idk...I'm about to start and some of the guys I'm working with has made over 110k so far just this year. Being away from home for a little bit of time really isn't that bad. 6 days on plus extra guaranteed board pay. Guaranteed at least 1 day off if not 2, with badass benefits. Really not that bad.

Yes, you're going to pay for it. No, it isnt worth it on the current system. You need to sleep. Class 1 railroads dont allow it. You're going to live about 3 years past your retirement. Work for a short line and get a side job. Same benefits.

NS conductors in FL don't make more than 100k before taxes with seniority. After taxes it's about 70K. Most bitch about how their schedule changes every week cause a few people on top like changing jobs every week, bumping off everyone else. These are people that have been here 10 years and still don't hold seniority for a stable schedule that doesn't change every week, and all for 70k after taxes. I have had warehouse jobs where I was making 70k after taxes with a predictable schedule. Already thinking about going back to the warehouse

Most of my coworkers and I just learn how to make it work. Any time you start talking about making 100k plus a year in most fields you’re gonna have to makes some sacrifices. Wethers that family time, personal time or your personal vices, cough cough ( blowin trees) one thing I will say is a lot of railroaders including myself talk shit about our job, but most of them rarely leave. Not too many places you can make the type of money we make with just a high school diploma. Just my two cents.

I worked at CSX in NY and never met a conductor making $100k. We had dudes who were there for 25 years and were only making $80K. You aren't making $100k unless you get lucky and your entire life is work and ONLY work.

Man 80k is really low where I work at. If you make just 80k here than you're probably getting fired here or you're doing something wrong. Im at twice that for the year but I work for another class 1.

Yeah at CN in Ontario, Canada we have guys that book 24 hours after every shift, use all their paid sick days and PLs and still make over 100k. That's absolute minimum here. I made 133k this year working pretty good but not as much as I could have . Another conductor made $167,000 on the spareboard. He did the best in our terminal last year

@dodgerssuck6983 idk man. When u break it dow with CN we make anywhere from 80-100/Hr based on the runs we do. Most runs are done and over with in 5 hours. Sometimes 10 hrs depending on which run. Our longest run is 224 miles atm. Then you are essentially making approx 50/hr or so

New guys making 100K? Not on UP. Plus you get any FR they take guarantee from you if you're on a guarantee board. So they penalize you if you stay marked up, or lay off. Plus the post 95 guys get shafted on pay scale.

@RailsTailsandTrails I can't remember what my dad or uncle made when they started out with Penn Central in 1975, just before the merger with Conrail, both retired from NS my dad in 2007 and my uncle in 2009. I know my dad had a good pension. Now I wished I asked him how much he made starting out. Too late on that one, he passed 2 years ago at 75.
