You have a lovely attitude rarely seen in the violin world, your channel is new to me. I play Mandolin and Violin left because I am Left Handed, consequently the rhythm comes very naturally through that hand as the right hand does for you. This led me on a life path to become a luthier because I had to modify every instrument I owned when young. I'm not a good player perhaps because teachers wouldn't take me on? I know it doesn't happen now but I have three badly broken fingers in my left hand because that hand was beaten daily at school to prevent me holding a pen with it. I'm glad you support young left handed players as violin is the only anachronism remaining today.

I'm left handed and I'm learning the "traditional" right-handed way for about a year and I would say I'm learnig quite well. Like you said, I feel like my dominant hand is helping me getting the notes well and my right hand it's having no problem with the bow. I honestly never thought of getting a left-handed violin, mainly because I didn't even knew they existed, and I did a quick search here and in Brazil we have almost no options to get left-handed violins, so I think It was a good choice to learn with a right-handed violin. So yeah, as a left-handed person, I would advise learning with a right-handed violin, based off my own experience.

Awaiting my Left handed fiddle from the Fiddlershop! They tried to tell me I needed a right handed one but ugh, being left handed in a right handed world isn't easy. Got the Concert version, don't plan on being in an orchestra anytime soon, I'm 68 and want to learn for my personal enjoyment. Have always loved music from this instrument. Right handed seems completely weird to me, I learned in school many years ago to play coronet and was in orchestra. (where, to my thinking, the right hand controlled what notes I was playing...) Loved it and wished I stuck with it, maybe that's why I'm here now. Left handed seems very natural to me, and just watching your videos on playing...I just have to copy exactly what you're doing. I'm not imagining what I have to do, you are my mirror. Simple. ? Sorry to be long winded, but I'm really excited to get started, my Concert violin should be here in three days and I'll give it my best. Thank you for not being down on us lefties. Can't wait to get started, and thank you for your videos!

I really thought about this. Great video. I truly believe the violin is traditionally a left-handed instrument. Because when I think about it the technical aspects of the left hand on the violin is is much more complex. Bowing obviously is important and most people bow with the right hand. I am a right handed person and I just feel like the left hand adjust motor skills just like any other right handed person when they learned to play the violin. So the argument thatLeft-handed people would feel more comfortable with a left-handed violin I think is one way of looking at it but honestly I don’t think it’s necessary at all because the violin is already a very more accommodating for the left hand and all right handed people have to switch over to using the left-hand much more.

I pondered this thought at the start of the video and why my left handed violin students always played with the violin on the left shoulder (as is traditional). It had no bearing on their bow hand and oftentimes, I forgot they were left handed and some students, I didnt even know where left handed! I personally think its irrelevant, but just some left handed people dont like being told they 'have' to play right handed - hence this video debate.

I have to say, that was really frustrating to watch. OBVIOUSLY you'd have to get a special violin. Otherwise the question would be: can a person use a regular violin to play left-handed? What people want to know is: is it possible (on a left-handed violin) to learn to play left-handed? You said it was controversial, and I've heard that all over the place. It made me think there was some important reason you shouldn't do it. Turns out it's totally possible, but apparently the violin world is married to tradition and doesn't want people to play left-handed. That's called snobbery, backwardness, and discrimination even! I TOTALLY feel that I should use my dominant hand (left) to bow. I don't understand why so many people (obviously not you, you are very open to doing it) wouldn't understand that what makes them feel better - using their dominant hand, when it's the right one - would be something other people would feel too. I seriously still don't get it. I can see some teachers just not wanting to bother trying to teach it in reverse, but the question is: can it be done? (yes) and why is there such an opposition to it from the status quo?! Also - not everybody learning violin wants to be in a group or orchestra - I'm going to hazard a guess that the vast majority never could even if they wanted to. So the quick explanation is: if you have aspirations to play in an orchestra or group, keep in mind everyone else will be right-handed and that may be a strike against you and you will have to sit separately. That's easy to understand. Next! I want to play for my own fulfillment. Ultimately, it seems the answer is - if you have a left-handed instrument and a teacher willing to teach you to play left-handed, YES, it is possible. There will just be some repercussions if you play in an orchestra or group. But thank you for explaining, as now I am determined to do it! A friend I spoke to scared me off with her snobbery about it. To hell with that! The establishment is meant to be bucked!

You absolutely CAN play left handed, but you do have to get a left handed violin im afraid. They are abou, but as I said in the video, you cannot just grab a 'regular' violin and turn the bridge about as it work work the same (opposite). I personally have no issue teaching someone right or left handed, but most do and make their students play 'right handed' probably due to laziness. I have taught left handed before and didnt find it an issue for me or my student. Im just careful as to what I say and how I say it in these videos as I get attacked from other who disagree as we know what he internet can be like - so I kept with the facts and stayed neutral, but did express, as a teacher, it would not be an issue - one would just have to buy a left handed violin made for them in order to learn properly.

When left handed person learns string isntrument he/she quickly learns that the left hand means hand on the string and right hand means hand with a bow. This means that the teacher does not even have to change the nomenclature because the books are written in the same way anyway. ( Sorry if there are mistakes but English is not my native language .)

One other way to consider is playing a regular (right-handed) violin left-handed without switching anything. Ashley MacIsaac does this. He explains that this allows him to play anyone's violin even though he plays left-handed, rather than limiting himself to left-handed violins. This seems like it would take some further mental gymnastics to remember your high notes are on the top of the strings, etc., but it has its advantages. I will also say I play a left-handed violin and have been using your course to learn. I've had no issues with learning left-handed. I just associate the notes with a particular string and I know where that string is on my left-handed violin. I suppose if I had played right-handed before and switched, it would be harder to do that.

It's a strange thing when you think about it. No switching the strings or bridge around at all. The reason is I can't afford to buy a new left-handed violin and because my arthritis simply won't let me swing my left elbow inward to reach the G string very well. My left elbow hurts so much after only 5 minutes of playing. I am left-handed, btw. Bowing with my right hand is all over the place. I think I'll get a piece of foam that I can use as a temporary left-handed chin rest and see how that works for me.

Hi Alison, I listened to your video about being left handed and playing the violin, you said as you were right handed perhaps you could be better playing the chords with your right hand and bowing with your left, and being a professionaI you probably could- I am very much right handed -I do have a guitar I sometimes attempt to play so I thought I would try it the other way around...I couldn't get my brain to work never mind the fingers, I just couldn't do anything, I couldn't even strum properly !! so it is very strange that the more intricate part of playing ( the Chords) is better with the left hand - that;s weird as playing the piano my left hand has a mind of its own...!!!! Similar to chicken picking here in the states, but I utilize it in my Psychedelic, Jazz Metal style. Well, I tried that on the violin and wow!! Just a neat trick I'd share. My 2 cents on the matter is that personally as a strong left-handed person, I don't see the need to learn the Violin "Left-handed" Both hands are involved and one hand doesn't have an easier job than the other. And Personally, I think Being a "Left-handed, right-handed violin player (ie the 'normal way')" has a slight advantage as moving my fingers around the fingerboard feels very easy, and my teacher feels like that's a hard thing for beginners to learn because of the right-hand dominance. So I feel unless you have a medical reason to play "left-handed" it makes more sense to just play violin in the "traditional" style. Plus! You get access to all the violin accessories such as chin-rests, shoulder rests, etc., where there aren't many if any for left-handed violin.

Left or right hand dominance has nothing to do with playing an instrument. It's all in the mindset of the person undertaking to learn an instrument. In learning to play an instrument one trains their hands and arms to do what is necessary to play the instrument. Very few, if, indeed, any people are so debilitated by a left hand dominance as to prevent them from playing the violin (or any instrument for that matter) in the usual manner ("right handed"). It's all matter of dedicating oneself to learning a particular way and persevering at it, which can be said of playing "right-handed" as well. The physical construction and set up of the instrument are a different though not unrelated topic. Especially where the violin is concerned.
