I wear sunscreen. Lots of it. My dermatologist wanted me to wear a hat rather than a visor as she’s starting to see skin cancer on the scalp. In each case the woman wore lots of sunscreen and a visor. I switched to a hat ( hiking upf hat with vents so it’s really cool.). I’m always puzzled when people say the wear a hat rather than sunscreen. I’m like, it’s like that computer programming logic, it’s hat AND sunscreen NOT hat OR sunscreen!

As someone with a sweaty head who can't wear a hat in warm weather because I get a mild heatstroke in about 10 minutes (I assume it has to do with sweat not being able to evaporate properly but I don't really know why) I now really am thinking of buying a small umbrella... I know people are skeptical about wearing sunscreen But I am brown skinned and am very prone to hyperpigmentation. The UV index in Indian cities(especially where I live) is quite high. The uv today where I live is 7/10 I didn't wear sunscreen properly and didn't wear hats until recently I am currently dealing with hyperpigmentation all over my face and I already have wrinkles at 18. So, yeah sunscreen is necessary.

Hi Michelle! Sorry I'm a bit confused. Let's say your hat has a very wide brim (e.g. Outdoor Research Sombriolet), the time is within an hour or two of solar noon, and whatever you're walking on doesn't reflect much UV (e.g. asphalt): would you still get a decent dose of diffuse UV? This is a real-life scenario that I've been doing for years (short walks to and from the community center to my house in FL), and I've never gotten even the slightest burn or tan from it despite not wearing sunscreen (Fitzpatrick classification: copy paper). I do use 0.1% tretinoin every other day though, so maybe that's kind of "undoing" it? Idk. Should I start wearing sunscreen for those short walks? (I always wear it on days where I'm gonna have additional time outside.) Thank you! - Collin

From a skiier - as she saod, snow is highly reflective and you can still get very sunburned in the cold on a bright day. Sunscreen isn’t just for summer. If you’re going to be on the mountain or out in the snow, wear your sunscreen (remember to get your nose!), or do as I do and cover your face entirely with a mask or scarf (keeps the sun off you AND keeps your face warm. I’ve been searching for suitable sunscreen for 18 years, at this point. I’m autistic with major sensory issues, and I think that’s been a huge part of it. But I’ve been unable to wear daily sunscreen my whole life. I’m awaiting the Purito Daily Go-To, First Aid Beauty’s, and Hero Cosmetics’s (green) sunscreens to try, which should arrive today, actually. But, unless I’m missing others, I’ve tried pretty much all mineral, dry-skin-friendly sunscreens available to zero success. I have a mast-cell condition, too, that doesn’t help my reactions to other ingredients in sunscreens, so I feel SOL. My dermatologist “OK’d” this only because of my skin issues and sensitivity, but he suggested a blend of 40/40 red raspberry seed oil/carrot seed oil, and 10/10 parts jojoba oil/rosehip seed oil (the latter being a suitable Vitamin-C replacement as all other V-C I've tried have caused rashes and severe flushing). I also add a couple drops of glycerin for extra hydration. I am sun-avoidant mostly, but I've used this concoction every day for 12 years and have only burned once (no reapplication). And for "unfriendly to aging skin" genetics, I look younger than my age (outside of my gray hair at 36). I don't know if the concoction is sustainable or not, but I get by with it in the Pacific Northwest. Still looking for a sunscreen that doesn't irritate, cause a reaction, and/or dry my skin out so much it feels like it's cracking off…. (And, to note: "chemical" sunscreens make my skin feel and look burned.)

Do you need sunscreen in very overcast climates (Scotland)? Do you still make vitamin D from sun exposure with sunscreen on? Thanks!
@sookibeulah9331
Жыл бұрын
Still need sunscreen in Scotland and no you don’t make vitamin D when wearing a decent sunscreen. Vitamin D is made when UVB penetrates the epidermis and converts dehydrocholestrol in the dermis into cholecalciferol which is D3. If you’re wearing sunblock the UVB can’t penetrate the epidermis. In Scotland the latitude mean you’ll only have good enough UVB exposure to make D3 between April to September and for a few hours in the middle of the day (longer in June/ July than April or September) but you’ll still get UVA exposure which can’t generate vitamin D3. There’s a feed app DMinder that’s really helpful in calculating vitamin D from sun exposure.
