That color combo is top notch ! When I was young ( about 18-20 ) there was this old man ( he was in his 50s-60 like I am now LOL ) had a old 53 Ford with a Y block 312 stuffed in it that he kept in his garage all the time. I think it was a Customline model. You rarely saw him drive it. The car looked mint original. Black paint and dog dish wheels. Well one evening we were doing a little drag racing on the the only straight stretch of road in our little rural community . The closet cops were about 15 miles away so about the only time we saw them when they had a warrant for some one. Well the old man stopped and was watching us, then he left. About 20 minutes later he came pulling up in that 53 . We all snickered a little as he said he would like to run with us. Let me tell you that 312 cleaned all our clocks ! I had a 340 Dart that wasnt no slouch. I could not keep up with that 312. I later heard that he used to run moonshine in it and that 312 was special built by one of the Woods Brothers out of Stuart Va. We live about 60 miles from there.

Never seen one before but I love it. My Uncle had a 56 Ford Fairlane 2 door hardtop with the Thunderbird 312 in it and automatic in the mid 60s. He always said that he didn't know how fast he could actually go in it because the speedometer only went to 120 mph.

Thanks for filing in the some of missing info on some of these hybrid Canadian classics. Dad owned a 50's vintage Mercury Monarch and I have been looking to track down pictures etc. This is a start. The Rideau is a really sweet car. Saved to my fav's.

Rideau pronounced ree dough with emphasis on ree. A popular name in Quebec and Ontario, the Rideau canal in Ottawa which becomes the world's longest skating rink in winter, streets businesses etc are named Rideau. Mercury Canada seemed to like French model names like Rideau, Montcalm, le Moyne, Frontenac.

Meteor was a lower priced offering from Mercury dealers. Basically a Ford with posh trim and Mercury emblems. Mercury dealers got the Meteor and Ford dealers got the Monarch which was a rebadged Mercury. That way in small towns one dealer could satisfy the demand for a full range of cars. They also made Mercury trucks which were Ford trucks sold by Mercury dealers.

Dad hod a 1956 Sunliner in red. Traded it in on a 1958 Edsel with 361. Fastest car he ever had, he said. 135 mph all day long.

Beautiful, beautiful car! This reminds, me when I lived in PR on the late 60's to 70 's, I noticed that all the Canadian cars from the USA version, where nicer looking and much better or reliable cars.(ex: a 1969 Pontiac Beaumont, 1967 Acadian Canso SD etc) And I always wondered why? Thanks Dennis 👍

Because geographically Canada is a vast country not every smaller community could support both a ford and Mercury dealer. Meteors were a different trim level Ford sold at Mercury dealerships, and Monarch were a different trim level Mercury sold at Ford dealerships. GM did the dame thing with Chevrolet/Pontiac and Chrysler with Dodge/Plymouth. Today we would call this "Badge Engineering".
