Film-maker Blog:- This project has been a real learning curve for me as an emerging film artist. I have worked with film in the past, but this is different to anything I’ve done before. When it came to taking the footage in to the editing stages, again this is something that I had done before, but I believe you never stop learning with this kind of skill.
My role within this session has changed since I began filming. I was already shadowing the session, and trying to juggle partaking in the session, and filming at the same time. When I looked back on the footage I had from my first few sessions, I realised that it was easier for me to take a step back and take on a more observant role. Although I found it extremely helpful to have prior knowledge of the session and the participants, it was more beneficial for me to see the bigger picture.
My idea for the final outcome of the film changed as the sessions went on. Each session is unique, meaning I had a broad range of material to work with. It is important to celebrate the diversity of the participants as this is an important factor in each session, but this made it challenging to find a way to bring all the different elements together. During the final stages of creating this film I am still working with this and finding ways to highlight this uniqueness.
This project has really sparked an interest for me in filming. I have begun to take on more filming roles in other areas of my studying looking in particular at how it can show something in a different light or from a new perspective.
This kind of session does not always lend itself to the creation of a final performance, so creating a filmic representation of what goes on allows an audience to see a snapshot of the movement potential of each participant and how that is encouraged and developed.Description
