More progress of the new layout this week.
After mulling over the road tunnel for a couple of weeks, I decided to switch back to the original plan - a canal tunnel. It’s not something I’ve modelled before and I fancied trying something new. I based mine very loosely on Standedge Tunnel in West Yorkshire, with both the cottages by the water and the mooring area to allow boats to wait before passing through the tunnel taking inspiration from this site.
I started by cutting away the road and adding a some plasticard. After adding the canal walls made from Wills stone sheets, I painted bottom of the canal a dark murky brown. I built the landscape up either side using foam board (left over from the platforms) the filler gaps with Sculptamold. Once dry, I painted the towpath grey.
For the water, I used good old PVA glue. The expensive water products might look a bit better, but are 20x the price and I’m not convinced they look 20x better…… I had a few bubbles appear once the PVA was dry, but I reckon this makes the water actually look more realistic.
Once the water had dried I used Geoscenics road ash to create the towpath and blend this into the road. This is available here:

Next I put together a Craftline Models canal kit. Very quick and easy, and they look pretty good. I just need a driver and some passengers for it now!
After this, I scratchbuilt some terraced cottages for the left hand corner of the layout on the road that leads down to the station. These were built from Wills stone sheets using the usual method and painted using emulsion paints.
And lastly of course, I added more trees.
As always, thanks for watching.
