Based on the study you guys linked, it's more than likely that the chemicals are from the manufacturing process. Methylene chloride seems to be prevalent in membrane/polymer manufacturing, and it's either remaining in the membrane material or not removed properly as part of quality control. Have you looked at other RO membranes? It seems this might be a widespread issue and not limited to Waterdrop.

Wow! I have been using the waterdrop N1 countertop RO system for the past 3-years but just assumed the water was pure due to the low TDS. Now you have me wondering if my water is safe. Update- I took apart my system to check for any chemical reservoirs and there are none. Just the filters, tubing two pumps, a front holding tank that contains the UV LED and TOC sensor, power supply and controller board. The big pump is a LEFOO RO booster pump and that does the main pumping through the RO membrane filter. The water then goes into a clear front holding tank that you can't see unless you take the front cover off. That has the UV LED at the bottom. Then there is a small pump that pumps from the front tank to where the water comes out. I am wondering if there was a misinterpretation of what they said was performed in the manufacturing process. Very strange. There are rubber seals and two of them felt as if they were lubricated with something like petroleum jelly. It had that feel to it. Maybe that is the source???

My guess would be the contaminants are from the manufacturing process. Both methylene chloride and xylene ae NOT soluble in water, so it doesn't matter how many time you pre-wash the system. Having said that, there is always some insoluble chemicals that will come out even if they are generally insoluble. Additionally, where are the filters manufactured? Many "low cost" manufacturing countries have little to no quality checks.

Curious your thoughts on a whole house system vs. individual filters at the sink/shower/etc. seems like the upkeep of these small systems is pretty expensive vs whole house just needs solar salts? But whole house is a big investment, would love your thoughts!
@boswater6065
2 ай бұрын
It depends on your water quality and what you want to achieve. A filter at the point of use may be required to remove all contamination out of your drinking water, and a whole house filter might not do the drink. But a whole house filter will probably do a much better job cleaning your shower water than a shower filter. But you mentioned solar salts, so I'm assuming you are looking into water softeners? Water filters and water softeners are 2 different things. If you want to soften your water then you definitely need to go whole house.

Don’t waste your money especially if you don’t have money to waste because none of these “filtering systems” are 100% accurate on every single lab test, and on different waters: eg, city water, country side or well. What if you ditch the Waterdrop RO and spend another few hundreds on another RO and later on find out that it has some issues also. Have you considered doing a second filtration round using the Waterdrop Pitcher with its original filters because it removes this particular chemical. Eventually the toxins in the Waterdrop G3 will clear, it’s still new. Once that disinfectant runs out then there will be no toxins in the water. ❤

Thanks for sharing. I'm aware that UV doesn't remove bacteria but simply prevents them from multiplying. But I assumed that the test for total bacteria count is some kind of growth test(?), so allowing the bacteria population to grow for a certain time. If that is true I assumed there should be a difference between UV and non-UV-treated water, but I might be totally wrong...
@canzhang8455

I doubt it was a growth test, more likely a test to find out whether the bacteria is present. Total Coliform and E coli. are certainly detrimental, but bacteria in drinking water are not all necessarily harmful, so it is also important to understand what kinds of bacteria are in there. A lot of variations could contribute to the final test results so please keep these in mind when interpret them, particularly when all data are from a single source (i.e. a private test company).

It will be at least a couple of weeks before we can do the test. So if this feels really urgent to you, then maybe better conduct your own testing. This is the test kit we are using: etrlabs.com/product/volatile-organic-compounds/ - there isn't anything that can go wrong really, as long as you follow the instructions precisely. Just make sure to flush the system for a minute or so before taking the water sample so that you avoid TDS creep.

After such negative tests results, damaging sales of the product, I find it disparaging that you did not request another sample model, or review another model from Waterdrop. After watching your top 10, with glowing reports from another manufacturer (with links to purchase), it almost seem as though your reviews may be profit driven, (one persons opinion). Nonetheless, I believe for parity, since your review was so negative, it would have been fair to request another model to verify these results.

@@commie281 On an actual RO system hooked up to a tap it's recommended to flush for 30 minutes. So consider how little 3 gallons is to flush, and how little 2 weeks of use is for such a system that is used to just fill a glass of water at a time.

Thank you for this and your other excellent videos! It seems as though the concentration of the chemicals decreases over time and I wouldn't be surprised if they disappear completely after a while. I purchased a CoreRO C1H just before it was discontinued. When I turned it on, I saw that the initial rinse of the RO filter created very foamy waste water. Thanks to your video, I was aware of the potential problem and flushed the device three times. I now handle it in such way that I discard the first new filtered water after a prolonged pause (e.g., after the night). Of course, I can't say whether this is sufficient, but I'm not going crazy about it. I wouldn't be surprised if this problem also affects many other RO systems, as there probably aren't that many manufacturers of RO membranes ... Again, thank you for your great work! I built a portable version of the multi stage systems that are commonly installed under kitchen sinks. Each one of those stages is a plastic tube that contains some volume of water. So any time it sits that means each stage has standing water. I installed a t connector and a valve to allow flushing of the entire prestage before it reaches the RO membrane. People who maintain fresh and saltwater aquariums have been doing it for years to ensure the purest water goes into their tanks since even the slightest contamination can kill off a tank full of various expensive tropical fish and corals.
