May 9th, 2015. On this day, Saul "Canelo" Alvarez takes on hard punching veteran James Kirkland aka "Mandingo Warrior" in a non title Junior Middleweight bout.
Prefight records; Alvarez 44(31)-1-1, Kirkland 32(28)-1.
For this fight, Kirkland parted ways with longtime trainer, the great Ann Wolfe and hired little known Rick Morenos instead. This move was seen as a fatal decision as the only other time that he did not have Wolfe as her trainer, he suffered a devastating KO1 loss against 17.5-1 betting underdog Nobuhiro Ishida back in April 2011. It was also the 1st setback of his professional career.
Going into the bout, Kirkland hold notable wins over Brian Vera, Carlos Molina & Alfredo Angulo while Alvarez had victories over the likes of Jose Miguel Cotto, Carlos Baldomir, Shane Mosley, Josesito Lopez, Kermit Cintron, Lovemore Ndou, Erislandy Lara, Alfredo Angulo & Austin Trout.
Kirkland, known for his fighting heart relentless attacks from the opening bell and manages to gain an early upper hand momentarily, before the younger prime Canelo retaliates with a measured, brutal assault to deck Kirkland in the opening round.
In the 2nd frame, Canelo resumes his systematic offense while counter punching effectively. Kirkland although overwhelmed was still able to connect with some punches but still outmatched by the 25 year old Mexican star despite showing great resolve.
After 6 minutes of boxing, Kirkland had absorbed tremendous punishment to the head and body but still manages to start off aggressively as he did in the 2 previous rounds. However, the accumulation of punishment by Alvarez proves to be too much as Kirkland is decked again for the 2nd time.
The Mandingo Warrior beats the count in a great display of fighting heart, but ultimately a devastating Canelo overhand right puts him to sleep.
Canelo’s victory was named Knockout of the Year by Ring Magazine.
After this defeat, James Kirkland retires from the sport after a 14 year pro career with a final record of 32(28)-2.
This September 15th, Gennady Golovkin vs Canelo Alvarez 2 will FINALLY happen after a few roadblocks mainly due to Canelo being tested positive in 2 random drug tests.
Who will triumph in this highly anticipated rematch? Let me know what you think!
