That canned goods metaphor was a really good way to express the way life works. Everything will expire, everything runs out of time eventually. Which is why when he went back to get a date with May, she had run off with some other dude to the theaters already.

Bruh this scene makes me so sad. I think he is still in denial because he relates himself to the expiration. He already know that May's love for her is already expired. That's why he was so distressed when the expired cans are already disposed, it's like saying that there is no really a chance that may will come back and that the expiration of the date he set is really coming. What makes it worse is when he gives the expired can to the homeless and rejects it because it is already expired. Even those who really are at the bottom of the hierarchy no one wants a expired can, it's really a hopeless and super depressing situation to be into.

and the salesman said he does not care abt what the “can feels” which i think its a metaphor for nobody cares if you put so much effort on a relationship and it expires

well... you can also look at it the other way around. what he is speaking is truth, certain canned goods do not have a real expiration date, if properly stored. the expiration date is arbitrary in those cases, and is only marked relative to when they are canned. i actually found this scene very funny because of that. you can see the clerk almost breaks a smile because it's so ridiculous. but ridiculous in that it is truth not spoken, not in falsehood. and even the homeless man is convinced the expiration date has a real meaning. it's a conditioning disguised as fact. i guess for the clerk, the appearances and customs are merely there to move product. people want it to be new, but most things, if properly stored like in a sealed container without oxygen inside it or getting in, last a long time. of course another reason why it may go bad is because it's exposed to heat of the outdoors/sunlight, and eventually the food does become exposed to oxygen due to deteriorated container or gets slightly cooked because of it. this is how i think it relates to the room of cop #2. it takes a lot of effort for faye to keep it fresh. when it gets flooded, it also takes a lot of work to fix. but people do not usually want to put effort. like the pineapple, it is easier to get a new can. but if you truly know what is worth saving, it could be worth it. yet it is constant work as well.

I thought that your teacher was overanalysing it. I feel like it's more about fear of being left by someone or something that means a lot to you, that fear was represented in "expiration date".
