Canoe trips are slow, and often involve hours of paddling in the rain and not so fun conditions. I thought I would show the real life of the slow experience of solo paddling through our northern lakes when it is raining, and just chatting about stuff that matters at the moment, such as rain gear, hypothermia, bilge water, and of course the weather. The paddling style shows J-stroke and Canadian stroke, and a few stern draws.
Please let me know if these slow-paced "canoe-side chat" videos are too long and slow, and if instead I should edit them down to keep things moving with more variety.
The real light is indeed that dull gray and the water looks black. In post processing, I could have added artificial light and colour, but I prefer to keep it real. Its not always sunshine and rainbows. Its often wet, cold, dull, dreary for hours or days on end. Solo canoe tripping requires a strong attitude to adapt to work and conditions that are not always pleasant, while keeping a positive outlook on things, focusing on the long-term rewards. Poor weather especially can get you down very fast if you don't learn to deal with it and stay warm and dry. Otherwise it is easy to get discouraged or depressed, and that is when accidents can happen for solo trippers. So I thought I would show you a sample of the long, slow, rainy experience.
Day 1 of a planned week-long solo canoe trip, Boreal Forest, Northwestern Ontario, mid-June, 2019.
