This video helped me out greatly several years back when I first started shooting with canon glass. One thing I have since learned is that 10-18 has some seriously crazy lens flares when shooting towards a light fixture such as a chandelier, etc. I shoot real estate so this happens often. I also have the tokina 11-16 and it produces 0 lens flares when shot in the same situation as the 10-18. I just bought the 10-22 to try out now and hoping it is like the tokina with less flares because I really like that 1mm extra width from the canon. Tokina definitely has more chromatic aberrations (easy enough to fix in post). Figured I would add my 2-cents to anyone curious on how these do for real estate.

Is the 10-18 still usable? Or is there a way to mitigate the lense flares?
@ThePhotoForce
4 жыл бұрын
@@luisungredda9029 yes, it is 100% usable. I used the 10-18 professionally for years and it is easy enough to edit out the lens flares. They typically show up around unshaded light sources like chandeliers. I still have one of my shooters using the 10-18 daily for property shoots. I personally use the 10-22 now if on a crop canon and my 15mm Loawa if on my full frame sony. It just saves me a bit of time not editing out the flares but again its not every picture, just when pointed at an open light source. Hope that helps,

@@nishanketbaniya9476 really depends on what kind of work you are planning to do with it. I shoot real estate so a full manual lens works well for me. Loawa does a 15mm full manual (focus and aperture) lens for canon full frame. Reason I like loawa is because they have a zero distortion and f2.0 is great for low light interior video. Look up on B&H Photos website "Venus Laowa 15mm f/2 FE Zero-D Lens for Canon EOS." That is my go-to for real estate. Lens is on the pricy side for full manual for the zero distortion and high quality image saves me a lot of time from post process editing. If you need auto focus, probably go with one of canons 16mm full frame options. They have several like a 16-35, but I am very happy with my laowa. If you need a more budget friendly full frame lens, Rokinon has several. Their 14mm puts out a decent image but you will have distortion that you have to correct in post processing. I have used all of these at one point. Best of luck!

I actually bought the 10-18 for real estate photography and had to return it. It consistently made a magenta ghosting effect at windows, chandeliers and any bright spot in the photo. I bought a used 10-22 and was much happier. No ghosting on the old 10-22.

I own the 10 - 22 for about a year and I think if I had to choose once again, I would still buy the 10 - 22. USM is more trustworthy than STM with my 7D, more light than 10 - 18 and, don't forget, that 22 mm on crop sensor is about 35 on FF - which is wide standard and works pretty good in repo.

I have the Canon 10-18, and the Tokina 11-16. Tokina for low light stuff and in doors, as I don't find the Canon isn't much use after dark. Having said that, the Tokina flares terribly in night street photography, the Canon is better if the scene is a non moving one. The Canon is brilliant in the daytime, and is ultra quiet and ultra light if you need to carry it around all day, like I do. However, the Tokina is also brilliant in the day, and produces lovely starpoints/starburst when you stop it down. The main drawback is the Tokina weighs a ton in comparison to the Canon, and doesn't focus nowhere as close to the subject if you need that. For video, use the Canon; for photography use the Tokina. If you use the Canon for photography, make sure you have light or a flash.

I love night time photography. The Tokina really is the only choice. Philip Bloom has recommend it at 16mm for a FF camera. Ive tried it on a 5DMII and found it to be crazy wide but usable (smidgen of vinette). However I bought the Canon 10-18mm for daytime shooting, and which now I will try for silky smooth water falls. I like to shoot inside Cathedrals when I travel and found the 10-18mm was very weak in these darker sanctuaries (ISO cranked adds grain, and the shadows were unacceptable). Thanx for your review.

Canon 10-18mm is miles better than other lenses in this comparison. It gives equal sharpness BUT is much better at chromatic aberation than Tokina, much quieter and smoother in video capturing, has IS, and can focus very close. Slower f-stop doesn't mean anything, as it has aforementioned IS, and with it it actually becomes more capable of taking handheld sharper pictures in low light than any other lens here. It is slower maybe 1-2 stops, but it is compensating this with 4 stops capable IS ! Today's DSLR mostly have excellent ISO performances, so that doesn't matter too. And is cheapest lens here..all in all great lens for money.

Most of what I shoot is video indoors in basement so I require the STM and larger aperture. I have video lighting but not sufficient for even my 18-55 at F3.5 without pushing the ISO. It's too bad Canon doesn't have an F2.8 at higher price point. It will cost me a couple hundred just to get sufficient lighting for F4.5. I'd rather that money go into a more robust lens.

I came from the Tamron 10-24mm which always had distortion on the edges(old model not new), but i worked with what I had then. Just two months ago I got the 77D, what was my first choice for UWA lens? the Canon 10-18mm stm, trust me all the reviews are NOT wrong about this lens its painfully sharp right across the lens. I would have got the Tokina for low light work, but I really don't need 2.8 in a bright sunny part of the World that I live in. Toby is right, unless your doing star trails and night time landscape the Canon will trounce the Tokina every time. Thanks for a great comparison Toby, love your reviews, always balance and sensible conclusions built on hard facts and your experience.

In my view the 10-18 has too many issues with flaring and ghosting of light sources, be it windows or light bulbs. I have owned the 10-18 for 2 years and recently purchased the 10-22 and the ghosting has completely disappeared from my interior real estate photography meaning i spend much less time in post fixing the ghosting,, the extra $300 for the 10-22 over the 10-18 is worth it for the time savings in post production.

The 10-22 f3.5-4.5 USM is the classic alrounder; good range, and good aperture. The 10-18 f4.5-5.6 IS STM is a good entry level UWA that is small, lightweight, cheap and the STM is great for videos, but limited zoom range and limited low light. The Tokina 11-16 f2.8 is great for wide aperture, but very limited range.

Fantastic video, thanks for making this. I've got a really tough decision as to which lens to get.... I'm going to Iceland soon and want to take photos of the Northern Lights if we are lucky enough to see them whilst there. Having had a look on flickr there are some absolutely amazing shots with the Tokina, and obviously hardly any with the 10-18 due to the aperture difference (such a shame Canon couldn't make this lens 2.8 but then I guess the price would be a lot higher).. our trip is for a week, and then when I get home I will be shooting landscape shots between dawn, day and dusk, in England, UK... so I wouldn't neccessarily _need_ the Tokina back home.... What do you think I should do ? I could hire the Tokina for Iceland and buy the Canon when I come back from our trip I guess, but I don't know whether to just buy the Tokina and save having to spend money on hiring a lens just for Iceland.

I love using the 10-18 on a DSLR mounted up as a dashcam for road trips. Tried other wides but the excessive distortion weight/bulk and slower noisy AF they all had was a deal breaker. Better quality footage and more versatility than a GoPro on the 10-18. I used a SL1 and a 7DII but I am selling the SL1 as it does produce more grain issues in low light. The 7DII in contrast performs fantastic but its a bit bulky. Been eyeballing some 2nd hand 70D's as they are starting to drop below $400 on the used market. The Dual Pixel AF and flip touchscreen will do much better as a dashcam along with the improved sensor over the SL1.

Thanks for your really useful video, of all the reviews on the 10-18mm lens, I found this to be the most informative. A wide angle lens is something I have been sitting on the fence on for a while, mainly justifying the cost. Helps that the 10-18mm is the same filter size (67mm) as 18-135mm, saving lots on extra filters! Could I just ask, how does the 10-18mm perform on long exposures, I know you said no starry skies, but what about dawn and dusk shots? PS. Sorry but I don't shop from B&H, mostly due to the customs charges that I'd be dealing with. Believe Amazon UK also give commissions? Not sure about DigitalRev or Onestopdigital?

The Tokina is an EF lens, that will work on a full frame camera. The two canons are both EF-S lenses, for crop frame only. So to me that's a plus for the Tokina. However, the zoom on the Tokina is backwards compared to Canon lenses. If you have other Canon zooms, the Tokina will confuse you when you are trained to turn the lens clockwise to zoom in, and that zooms you out...

You can use the 10-22mm on full frame from 14mm onwards but the edges get very soft, good enough if you are not pixel peeping. You only need to gently remove the rubber part on the back and it works great, even on the oldest EOS film camera :)

Great, very illustrative content, thanks! Two years after this video, would you still recommend the 10-18mm as an add on to an APS-C setup or as a travel lens?

+César Martínez it's still an excellent lens yes

Since this video, I have invested in the Sigma 20mm f/1.4 . Incredible prime indeed. However, I am missing a wide short tele photo lens say 10..12..15..or 18 up to 35 mm with either 1.4...1.8...or 2.8 aperture: I tried your suggestions with the Canon lens in your reviews but in low light situations thèy were quite poor wide open! Apart from the Sigma 18-35 f /1.4 lens; is there anything else on the market you would recommend for a non professional price!?! Thanks!

Hi Toby! Well here's my thought, even if it is biased from my latest experience I had tonight. I went out shooting some fireworks, with the kit lens 18-135, and I was almost upset I didn't know exactly where it was focusing, until after I took the picture. Sure there was a work around, by focusing on the building on a hill (the fireworks where on the river of the picture of mine you critiqued couple episodes back), but fireworks are unpredictable on the most part. I'd definitely go with the Tokina, then, with also its constant aperture, that kind of makes it up for the incredible image stabilization, plus I'm always with a tripod so I'm not so worried about it, and shooting via wi-fi is a bless (other 20 bucks saved instead of buying a remote). The autofocus in the lens it is noisy, but then again the other work around is using an external microphone (which is crucial for anyone making videos for a good audience). The 10-18 is attractive, the price first of all, but the lack of a focus indicator, and the variable aperture (hence the costrain to stop it down significantly for video work if zooming is required), really keep me far away from it. Cheers!

Hi Giuseppe - I have shared that tip before too - something far away is often enough to set the lens at infinity but there are times when nothing is around you except blackness and the stars. Trade offs with both lenses and work arounds with both. I do still like the Tokina but as someone that only occasionally needs a wide angle lens the 10-18 will do the trick for me. Thanks!

Thanks for your reply! Yep I agree: for those whom don't shoot that wide very often, and for those whom just want to have a nice lens without too much fuzziness I'd say, the 10-18 it is perfect.

I am undecided on which to buy for my 70d. I like how the canon 10-18 has IS, but the constant aperture of 2.8 with the Tokina makes it quite tempting. I do a lot of video work and really can't choose which way to go...

Not2Sane Tom YLY Let me share my experience as a vlogger. My standard setup is Canon 800D with the 10-18mm. Works very well outdoors and when you have natural light. I was struggling indoors in lower light conditions. I move around a lot and don’t want to carry additional lighting. So I got the Tokina 11-16 for indoor vlogging, because of the 2.8f. This latest video was recorded indoors without any additional lighting. I am very happy with the result. kzitem.info/news/bejne/0JyZsqaBnHt6eqQ

Great video! What would you recommend as being the most cost effective Camera and Lens for a vlogger, a lot of moving objects at times, and still videos too? Ideally, I want a Canon 70D with the 10-18 lens but is there a cheaper one that can get the job done?

Then according to you the best lens is the canon 10-18? I have that lens and I wanted to buy new tokina 11 20 mm 2.8 Now I changed idea. I remain with my old cheap 10-18. Thanks

Which one would you choose for milky way landscape astrophotography if you had the choice between the Tokina 11-16 and the Canon 10-18 ?
@UltraSonic73

The Tokina has a constant aperture of 2.8, meaning that you will get anywhere from 1-2 stops more light. This could mean dropping the ISO down from 3200 to 1600 or even 800! In my opinion, this makes it better for astrophotography :)

Unfortunately I had two Tokina 11-16 now, both with sharpening problems in infinity. I now got myself a Sigma 10-22mm f/3.5 I'll see tonight if it's a good choice.

+Florian Fabian I'm back from a Milky Way trip and I can say, the Sigma 10-20mm f/3.5 EX DC HSM is the right objective for me :) After I was extremely disapointed from the two Tokina 11-16 f/2.8 I tried, the Sigma has healed the wounds. I got mine for 399€, so I guess it's still in a good price range and an alternative for the Canon 10-22

Let me start off by saying I think your videos are great very informative and quality is superb. I apologize in advance for my question... I recently bought the Tokina a few days ago and just watched your video today. I really love that 10-18. I'm doing cityscapes and landscapes and not too much video. Which do you think would be best for me?

Thank you for the good review. I just bought USED Tokina 11-16 f/2.8 AT-X 116 Pro DX lens for my Canon 70D and found that auto focus does not focusing correct especially at the short distance and need to be corrected with manual focus but my other lenses are fine. Would like to have your opinion, please, do you think is something wrong with the lens or ...? Thank you.
