The 14-35L f/4 has enormous distortion at the wide end that is being digitally doctored up with the resulting loss of resolution, especially in the corners. This may be ok for most of you but the 15-35L f/2.8 has much better optical corrections that don't need lots of doctoring up as a crutch, which maintains more resolution in the corners etc.

Yes, the newer UWA RF glass is great, but that adapted EF 16-35 F4 IS L is still wonderful on the R bodies.

Thank you for this comparison. 15-35mm f 2.8 for me definitely. It seems sharper and optically better (less distortion). I tend to shoot indoors every now and then (weddings, parties, temples, churches) so 15-35mm f 2.8 is my choice.

I went with the 2.8 for corner sharpness and I shout indoors like churches and museums and that extra stop of light makes a big difference even shooting with the R5.

Hey Alex, awesome and informative video! I’ve developed an insatiable interest in photography. Your video help me to understand the type of lens I should buy depends on what I’m going to be shooting. I like shooting landscape so the best lens for me would be 15-35mm with a f4 aperture. I also fly a PHANTOM 4 Drone which has a pretty sophisticated camera mounted on it and I’m learning how to use the different shooting modes when I fly. I will be subscribing to your channel because I’m learning a lot from you about the ends and outs of photography! Please keep producing those great and informative video…thy are quite invaluable…take care

this is clearly a "it depends" question. Many things in photography are "it depends'. I am the house photographer at a 180 seat music club. Many would think that 1.8 or 1.4 lenses are the order of the day. I opted for the 24-105 f4 Canon lens over the f2.8 version because I liked the longer reach. I use full frame cameras so bumping the ISO up a bit is not a problem for me. Sure, sometimes the f2.8 would be preferable but for the most part I do quite well with f4. For outdoor portraits I could go with either one. All depends how one shoots and what one shoots. For some f4 is not acceptable. I get it. Again, all depends. Thanks for the video! 🙂

Sorry about the late comment, I just found your channel. Great comparison, however, in the 35mm shots it appears the 15-35 is focused on the bricks whereas the 14-35 is focused on the citrus foliage. Was that manual or auto focus?

Interesting comparison. Pretty subtle differences. Of course I'm excited to get adapters so I can use my 55mm f2.8 and 200mm f4 Pentax lenses on my Sony Nex-3n and Nikon 1 J5! Not quite the same league but exciting to me!

Thanks for this in depht comparaison. If thé pros ans cons for still photographe is pretty well covered, I'm deeply waiting for a similar "analytical" examination of +'s/-'s f2.8 vs F4 for vidéo.

I got the F4 and very happy with it. I do portrait and events (indoor and outdoor) but with by R6, I can push the ISO and get the shot I need. The bokey is not much different especially at the extreme wide end.

No. This ridiculous cycle by camera makers is not sustainable. Why do we "need" the latest? Trying to sell more and more gear to fewer and fewer people cannot last. Eventually the impact of KZitem influencers will diminish, and that will be that. Have a nice day.

Hey bud I couldn't agree more. If you watch enough of my videos you'll find reviews done recently of older cameras, some upwards of 40 years old. I'm a big fan of 'you don't need the latest'. Now what I do try to do is share as much of what I can get my hands on in hopes to help people make educated decisions on if a product is right for them. Hope this adds perspective on where my compass is pointed. Stay well new friend!

Hey bud, the benefit the 14 has is of coarse, weight and size much smaller. If you don’t mind, the weight, go with the 15 all the way sharper lens with a few more tricks up its sleeve.

Unfortunately I see a superior result with the 2.8 with your sample shots. I was hoping to get away with the f4, but if I do that, I’ll always lament as I’m not strong enough to resist nice photography gear. What’s that saying, cry once….?
