This a really nice lens first time we see a 800mm reach on a budget yet still sharp Thank you for a great review

Thank you most Photographers want to know if it can be used in low light and how sharp it is and it was hard to find this info in other reviews so decided to do my own.

@@Gabster1 indeed 👍 I also like the fact that you first showed the image at 800mm, then where the subject was in relation to the camera . Well done 😁

Nice review, Gaby. Wish it was internal zoom for better weight balance but I suppose there has to be some limitations. And yes, for a long lens like this, you need a good tripod preferably with lens support.
@Gabster1

Thank you :) The internal zoom is not a big deal as it is nice to have it collapse in a small size. It is not very front heavy, and yes the 800mm takes a new meaning to vibrations.

Very nice review! Thank you. Wonder how it would compare to a 100-500 with a 1.4 tc.
@Gabster1

I have tried a friend's 100-500 with a 1.4 tc I think they are about the same with the 200-800 you get a 100 more 800 vs 700. Without the TC the 100-500 is better so all depends if you need the 700-800 in most cases you do, and far cheaper. The 200-800 does reasonably well with a tc at 1120mm

@@Gabster1 I use the RF 100-500 on an R7 as my primary "birding set-up", and I don't think I've ever had so much fun with a camera, with spectacular image quality. I recently added the 1.4x TC for rare occasions when I feel I need more reach. In my experience, the resolution and image quality of the R7 with RF 100-500 is so good that adding the TC doesn't degrade AF performance or image quality in any meaningful way, and I find the TC is very versatile, though I'd love to see a direct comparison with the RF 200-800.

Hey Gaby thank you for the video. Great review and recommendation as always. I do want to pick your brain a bit and get your take. My FIL is old and wants a setup to sit in his house and look at the ocean around 5-7 kms away. I looked into telescope but terrestrial telescope don't give the clarity and color due to atmospheric effects for these distances. Can you suggest a decent setup that would work for 7kms terrestrial zoom purposes? I can always grab a camera with a good lens and have a screen connected to it too. Thanks!

It is hard to fight atmospheric effects at these distances. Some of the High end Scopes that birders use would be your best bet. You also need a good solid tripod at these magnifications just walking around the tripod will cause vibrations also a phone adapter will add excitement. I never owned one but whenever I am out Photographing wild life you see them and often they are nice enough to share the view I must say it is impressive specially the high end ones.

LOL. Every lens will shoot in low light. You just have to leave the shutter open long enough, or turn the gain (ISO) up high enough. Or both. The question is whether the subject will stay stationary that long, or whether you can hold the camera stationary that long. No amount of pixel peeping will make a photo "sharp" if the subject or camera moves while the shutter is open. We all know what aperture means, and we all understand what raising the gain (ISO) does. And yet, there are a LOT of people who are looking for someone to tell them "it's not that big of a deal".

I'll bite. My old DSLR wouldn't autofocus beyond F8. No longer a limitation with my modern mirrorless tech and on-sensor AF. Moreover, low light / high ISO performance is no longer an issue with modern sensors and denoising software. So sure, it's less big of a deal now, as this isn't your grandfather's gear. In my opinion. BTW, nice images. Thanks for sharing.

I don't shoot much video, but many rely increasingly on the built-in video features. Since typical shutters speeds are 1/60s (i.e. 2x the frame rate), videography is also well suited to slower lenses. Sorry, I forgot to mention that.

So true, but in toda y 's world 3200 or 6400 ISO is very usable, especially with the noise reduction software that is available. Is it "no big deal"? Of course not. But it's not as big a deal as it used to be. And getting this kind of reach in a relatively compact lens at this price point is a bigger deal. Also, you don't always have to shoot it at 800mm. It's an f/8 at 600mm and 7.1 at 455mm, which makes it competitive with the 100-500 7.1 at 500. I've got a big f4 supertelephoto, but I'm not going to haul that up the side of a mountain anymore (at my age)! Also, I think this lens will be perfect on the seat next to me while driving around. The big supertele tends to get banged on the roof and steering wheel trying to get it into position. Will this lens work in every situation? No. Will it replace an f4 supertele? Of course not! But will it have it's uses? Absolutely!

You have thousands tied up in those two lenses and mention a skinny little tripod? Makes no sense at all. Kind of like $30,000 stereo speakers hooked up to a iPod. Get a better tripod and do it right.

I am trying to keep things very light as part of having a light lens but strong winds do not help. The light tripod works great if you are not doing any panning and no wind But you are correct I will Use my Big tripod and mount for windy days or video as it requires 5x heavier tripod compared to still photography.

You'd be surprised what an Ipod sounds like through a high end system. Best to keep your comments pertinent and accurate.
