70D auto focus is pretty good for fast action I use a Sigma 150-500mm on one for airshows, you pretty much always have centre point selected, without having used the mark II, it would be safe to say that on paper the Mark II is better but the difference in practice like most things with mid level compared to upper level cameras these days is probably negligible unless you plan on over analysing every image pixel for pixel. It seems that the Mark II is just the 70D with more stuff, except wireless.

Thanks for the review - I like your videos. I got the 70D about a year ago and I must admit....when I first heard about the 7D MK II I came abit obsessed about buying it. The reality is the newer camera won't make me a better photographer... rather a wider variety of quality lenses will help me explore different subjects. Unless you are a dedicated action photographer I feel the 70D coupled with the 18-35mm F1.8 and 70-200mm F2.8 USM II its a bloody great combination. In fact...all I want now is a decent 50mm and/or 85mm prime and that's it. I'll probably get the new Sigma 50mm F1.4 ART. I like sharp lenses.

As a wildlife/landscape photographer/videographer and as a storm chaser, I settled this by getting both. lol The 7DII is my primary out in the elements shooter body and the 70D is my video dashcam. Throw on the 18-135 or the 10-18 IS STM lens or one of the primes and you got a recipe for success. Videos are on my channel using these cameras among others.

Toby, I purchased a Canon T5i back in 2013 after having watched several of your KZitem videos and having talked to you about different camera body options. The camera has served me well over the past couple of years but I think that I am ready for an upgrade. Like many beginner/intermediate photographers, I am looking at potentially moving into the full frame world of photography for the very first time. I have a budget of between $1,800-2,000 to spend on a body and lens. I currently own a 55-250 STM, 50 f/1.8, and an EFS 24mm. I do understand that the 50mm is the only lens which I currently own that will function on a full frame body and that because of this, I will need to purchase a nice set of glass also. I mostly focus on landscape photography but also do a moderate level of sports photography for the school that my daughter attends. I am wondering if you could once again help steer me in the right direction for which option would be best for me. I have been looking into either purchasing the Canon 6d or the Nikon d610 but am not sure which would be the best choice for landscape with some sports shooting. Video is not a big requirement for me but crisp, high detailed images are. I have also looked at staying with a crop sensor and upgrading to either the 70d or the 7d Mark II simply for the fact that they seem to have good focusing sensors. I am concerned thought that the image quality with either will not be as good as a full frame body. For my current needs and with my budget what would be your recommendations for a body type and lens? Would it be more beneficial to stay with the T5i for the time being and spend the money on an L series canon lens, or to upgrade to a new body and purchase a slightly lower cost but still high image quality lens? I apologize about there being so much information in this message and thank you for you help once again. Thanks

I have been shooting music videos with the 70D for about a year now and I LOVE it. It's the best Canon DSLR for video in my opinion. The comparison to the 7D MkII I am interested in is the Samsung NX1. It has what looks to be a killer focus system, and its certainly suited to video. I think the cost through should mention lenses as there is no easy port of canon glass. So far the only NX1 video weakness I know of compared to the 7D MkII and 70D is that low light, its really ISO 1600, where as 70D is 3200, and the 7D MkII looks to be 6400 (which is the same as the 5D MkII).

I don’t really understand where these experts come from!!! Most of them start off with one notion but then, go on telling us just the reverse!!! This gentleman preferred the 70D over 7DII in the introduction. Subsequently, he was singing about all the strengths of the latter and weaknesses of 70D!!! Okay, let me disclose one of the Steller strengths of Canon EOS 70D with Duel-pixel CMOS AF. On Live View mode, it can focus on any desired point with a touch of the fingertip and also simultaneously take the shot if the Touch Shutter is activated. I always use this option when focusing gets difficult, for example, a bird on the ground behind few thin grass shoots. The view finder AF always catches the grasses throwing the bird out of focus. Immediately, I switch to Live View mode and touch the bird and get a perfectly focused shot.

Hi Toby, I'm looking to get a new DSLR camera. I'm really interested to get one of these two cameras, but I'm really not sure which one to get. The camera should be preferably a canon since I got really nice/good canon lenses. It should be quite weather resistant since I want to take it to damp places, as well as really cold snowy ones and it shouldn't matter if it is a little rainy. I want to be able to film HD and take really sharp action/ movement pictures (e.g. snowboarding, skiing, tennis, kayaking, etc.). At the same time I'd like to bring it along on my travels. I'd like to be able to take nice wide angle shots of buildings, etc. too. To make a long story short I'd like to capture every moment on camera. What do you think?
@rmproductions465

I would recommend the 7d or 7d mark ii..they are both great cameras that produce superb images and have some great features within them. They are both adequately weather sealed, have a high burst rate and buffer speed, shoot full 1080p HD video and are not to heavy making it easy to carry around depending on what lens you have mounted. Perfect for people who like to travel and carry the camera with them as often as possible.

Hey Toby, I also would really like to see a comparison of the 7D mk II to the 70D in terms of AF performance. I took my third 70D back to the retailer today and got my money back after a year of woes and 3 bodies all having serious AF issues. I think my camera has been with canon longer than I have had it in my possession. I have had a lot issues with getting consistent focus through the viewfinder using fast zooms and primes on the wide end on my 70D particularly at 35mm on my sigma 18-35 f/1.8 and canon 35mm f/2. I have invested heavily in APS-C glass with a sigma 50-150 f/2.8, 18-35 f/1.8 and Tonkina 11-16 f/2.8 as well as a series of primes which will work on FF. I do like the form factor of crop but I think the 70D is a good fit for me as I love the touchscreen features, but it wont focus with my fast glass at a distance. I am not sure if I should try a 7D mk II to see if it will focus consistently. What is gut wrenching is that the 7D mk II is double the cost of a 70D (and does have the touchscreen which I love) and not far off the price of a 5D mk III in the UK. If you could do some tests it would be much appreciated to see if the 7D mk II has the same issues with AF. Also if possible can you test the low light capabilities when you can interpret the RAW files in lightroom as many people have reported better low light capabilities. Thanks in advance! Love your work!

Hey Thomas - I understand your frustration - It took three trips to the Canon service center for my 70D to be fixed. I plan to do some careful testing with the 7D Mark II soon and more low light work. I have to say based on early low light tests that the improvements are very slight and can't imagine LR will make a huge difference.

CameraRec Toby Thanks for the reply Toby, I am awaiting your results. I had some very significant reproducible issues where I lost confidence in the ability for the camera and lens to focus on anything at a distance, f/4 and below, particularly on wide to standard lenses like the sigma 18-35 and canon 35mm. The camera I got my money back for is currently with Canon still after 2 months, now escalated to their engineering team as they have acknowledged an issue. After 3 camera bodies and too many trips to the service center I asked for my money back as I had been without the camera for too long. Everyone at the moment has great praise for the 7Dmk II's focusing system and I am wondering if canon have nailed it this time, or if it exhibits the same behavior as the 70D. I am tempted to get my local camera shop to order one in and put a few of my lenses on it to see if it has the same behavior. It will be a real shame if I have to upgrade to the 7Dmk II to get an APS-C camera from Canon that has the level of control I want, as its double the cost and has features I don't need and some missing that I use all the time. I loved the 70D and would be happy with one if it could focus through the viewfinder on my lenses. Thanks again for your help. Thomas.

Alexis Sixela It's swings and round abouts. Some Nikon lenses are better than the equivalent Canon and the other way around. I think the Canon 70-200mm 2.8 IS MkII is the absolute best lens of its kind on the market right now though. It's so good I know a few photographers who use it in place of primes within its focal range. It's incredible at 135 on a full frame body. So unbelievably sharp. Even the cheaper F4 version is an incredibly sharp lens. I have one of the 24-70's on my list after the 100mm 2.8 Macro L. Expensive list I know lol.

Is the 18 - 135 a good general purpse lens for it. Would my old lenses EF 28-105 USM and EFS 17-85 IS USM be good with the 7D II or 70D?

First, I'd like to thank you for your review. I've been trying to figure out the differences between the two and found your review to be very helpful. I currently have a 6D. The most difficult shooting I do is gymnastics. Low light and high speed subjects... With the 6D, I have difficulty getting the shot. I can not use burst because it isn't fast enough. The other problem is keeping focus on my subject. There is a big difference between focus on the bar vs the face a few feet away. Not much depth of field on my Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM. I would like to be able to shoot video of moving subjects using auto focus and based on your review, I need the 7D with the video of the 70D. Will the 70D or the 7D M2 Improve my success? I am not a very experienced photographer, so it may be that I am not using the right functions. I shoot Tv at 1000 and I use the AI servo. If you recommend an upgrade, will I be able to get all the benefits with my current L lens? If you recommend the 7D, will I need to accept needing to carry something else for video? Thank you for your help.

Another Important feature for me anyways is that the 7D offers Clean HDMI output for external recorders and the 70D does not.. that is my only disappointment i have as a 70D owner, other then that, i am really happy with my 70D Also i was wondering if the 7D has dual cards can they be used as a backup where the photos can be recorded to both cards like the 5D

Hi Tony great video. Just found your videos. I have owned a 70D and have many focusing problems with the camera. The pictures seem soft when I zoom in when viewing the pictures. I have heard others have encountered the same problems. I have been trying the single focusing point but still noticing the softness. I shoot a lot of weddings for friends and the sharpness just doesnt seem to be there with the 70D like it was with my Canon 20D. I am using the Canon L series 24-105 lens

Hi Toby. Thanks for the comparison videos. I'm still new to DSLR's but I own a Canon 600D kit. I also bought a TAMRON 70-300mm Lens to take zoom in shoots from distances. I'm a hobbyist and take pictures of everything Indoors & Outdoors but I also take photos and video of Race cars that are Stationary and while Racing/Moving from Track Side behind the Barriers and fencing. My question is I want to upgrade the camera kit and don't want to spend to much, around $1000. I have narrowed it down to these kits: 70D, 6D, 7D, 7DMK2. Which do you recommend for my application?

Great video, about to go and buy the 70D after a LOT of research. Could you recommend a good lens or two to go with this? (prime plus a variable) Any links to your vids on these reccommendations would be appreciated. Great vids mate. WIll reccommend your channel. David.

DaveDragon10 Are you planning on shooting video at all? Primarily photos? What kind of photos? All of these will factor into your decision. That being said, the 18-135 STM kit lens is a great lens to get started with for video or photos.

YakMan NC 70D for the hobbyist and fast card means cards with write speeds up above 45mb/s

For strictly video, would it be fair to say if i already own a 70D and the option to shoot 60FPS at 1080p isn't a big deal (i prefer 24FPS/1080p) that an upgrade to the 7D might not be that big of an advantage?

Which do you think is the better camera overall for event photography? I want to get more into event work and wedding work, so I'll be doing a lot of shooting in low light; Do you think the 70D is still cut out for that? I feel like the 7D ii will have better low light autofocus since it can focus in -3EV. Or do you think it would be better to step into full frame with the 6D? Granted if I had the money I'd get the 5D iii, but my wallet says otherwise.

Toby, Thank you for your insightful videos. I've been an enthusiast for sometime now and have been thinking about upgrading from my couple of years old t3i to a 70d. However, canon recently announced a new rebel, the t6s. Could you please do a comparison between the 70d and the new t6s to help understand which would be a better sub$1k deal?

So for a non professional who wants to shoot Taekwondo, Horseback riding and lamb/goat shows, would the 70D work and catch the action shots? What kind of lens would be best for the fast action of Taekwondo (indoor).
@photorectoby
8 жыл бұрын
+Samantha Carter Yes - 70D is fast enough and you can grab the 50mm f1/.8 STM if you are pretty close to the Taekwondo further back the 85mm f/1.8 would be a little better.

I agree you should be looking at the 85mm f/1.8, but think you should look at the 50mm f/1.4 (FOUR) instead of the f/1.8 (EIGHT). The 50mm f/1.4 has the same (better) USM motor the 85mm f/1.8 has. Take a crop body camera and a zoom lens to a place similar to where you would be shooting, and put the zoom lens at the 50mm and then the 85mm positions and practice shooting with the lens fixed on those numbers. Don't zoom. Pretend you have a fixed lens. And see if you could work with those focal lengths. In that same lens design series there is also the 100mm USM non macro and the 135 mm USM. The 70D will work, but for your applications, the 7D Mk II will have better images at higher ISO values in darker places. And think about how dusty horse and goat shows are, and consider having two camera bodies with two lenses, instead of changing lenses at the shows. Maybe one rebel camera body with a 28mm or 50mm lens for non action, stationary "portraits" when you can get right next to the people in the gym or the animal and handler out of the ring, and a 70D with a 85mm, 100mm or 135mm for good action shots of matches or the animals in the rings from the sidelines. Of course the 70-200mm f/2.8 lens would absolutely rock. But two fast primes on two bodies would do the trick and give you backup capability. Get two bodies that use the same batteries. It is so easy for me to spend your money.

Hi Toby, which one will you Preffer 7D or 70D or Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera for capturing crisp and high quality HD shots without much motion blur when handheld. As my main motive is to use the footage as back-plates for creating the shots with some good quality Visual Effects.

PhotoRec Toby Thanks for your reply Toby. I had a chance to shoot with GH4 this weekend and I would like to appreciate your input as I found it to be very impressive specially because of 4K. But as I am investing a lot of money in it, I would also like to know a little about Samsung NX1 which I found to be a very impressive camera under the same price range. I would love to hear your thoughts upon the same. And how much will you rate it in comparison to the GH4 and Canon 7D. Maybe the time for another Video Review. :)

Hi Toby, as always nice insights.. I am starting the dslr journey, I am confused between full frame and cropped sensor cameras.. The only good option I can see in the cropped sensor is 7d mark II..for full frame 6d is slightly old and 5d mark III is expensive.. Please suggest..

Toby, is it possible to turn off the live view screen on the 70D for videoing and just use the eyepiece for that? Too much glare on the screen for me!
@kirkdarling4120
8 жыл бұрын
+Al Meyer No, video depends on using Live View and the view screen. This is true of all the Canon DSLR (and any DSLR) because the same light used for viewing is also used for imaging. It must be diverted from the screen to the eyepiece or vice versa--light never strikes both simultaneously.

Hello! How good would you say the weatherproofing on the 70D is? Also, if I shoot for sports, but not extensively, is it a better deal to just stick with the 70D (in spite of its 7fps)? Which would be a better long term investment?

WeiRen Cheah 70D weather proofing is OK, 7DM2 much better. Not extensive sports 70d is fine, invest in a good lens or two.
