I learned from another video how to give the camera aperture priority. There’s a switch on the front right corner, lift up the flap, push it in, and it locks the aperture. (The function won’t work in the automatic program mode.) I hope this is good news to those who were concerned.
@nikhilr546
4 жыл бұрын
That switch is for the exposure lock. Aperture priority ends with setting the aperture ring on the green A and setting the desired shutterspeed. The exposure lock switch is used when you're trying to take a picture of an object or person that's backlit so that the exposure is concentrated on their body/face instead of the light in the black. Hope this helps!

@@nikhilr546 The manual included with the camera calls that switch "Stop-down Lever," which is the same as an aperture lock (it stops the lens down to whatever aperture is set). The "AE Lock Switch" (exposure lock) is on the side of the lens mount, above the "Exposure Preview Switch." All of these terms are directly from the manual included.
@ingowalkerling5141

@@sundaynightdrunk That Stop-Down-Lever has two functions: With FD and FL lenses you can - as you mentioned - stop down the aperture to the preset value to show the real depth of field. The second funktion works only with FL and lenses without FD - characteristics, such as bellows, manual extension rings and even M42 lenses with an appropiate adapter. FD lenses are not designed for stop down metering, since the maximum aperture contact will set the interior metering system to false exposure. With uncoupled lenses you had to operate the stop-down lever and then you can alter the shutter speed or the manual aperture ring (FL, M42) until the display shows [5,6■]. This is the stopped down index for stopped down aperture metering. All Canon FD are set to an aperture of 5,6, if no actual value from the lens is transmitted.

Just bought a new AE-1 Program with battery pack and auto winder. I had an AE-1 standard back in the late 70's that had about every accessory you could get back then. It was an amazing camera and in many ways film cameras make the digital cameras of today 2nd rate.

Can you not get aperture priority by setting shutter speed to program and then choosing aperture?

I'm like 85% sure this is the case just from playing with mine. Seems like it does adjust the shutter speed while keeping the aperature comstant. The Canon Camera Museum site (which AFAIK is official Canon) shows it does have aperture priority mode.

I ask to many questions... For I am wondering when in full auto mode does it aim for the 'sweet spot' aperture of the lens first ?
@dangerpowers123
5 жыл бұрын
I don't think it does. It's not that clever. In auto it will essentially try to keep the shutter speed up enough to get you sharp photos and then balance that with the fixed iso and the correct aperture on the lens to get a correctly exposed photo

Shot a few rolls of film with this camera but they didn't come out. Any way to check for a light leak on this camera? Is that the purpose of the viewfinder cover?
@dangerpowers123

Light leaks would only make the odd mark on the photo...it sounds more like a shutter issue. If you open the back of the camera and rake a photo can you see it open the shutter. ...e.g point it at a light bulb and take a photo with the back open to see if the light is let in to the back of the camera where the film would be

I resisted John Newcombe's 1980's Canon AE-1 ads, since "Real Photographers use manual cameras.";) In time, I looked at the AE-1 Program out of curiousity. It was smaller/lighter than a Nikkormat EL, and the "manual of arms for classic film cameras" had one set the shutter speed before selecting the aperture. (A leftover from my 35mm rangefinder camera days with Ye Olde Leica IIIa.) The Canon FD "twist bayonet" was quite different from the FL "breech lock bayonet," which made me wonder "what hath automation wrought?"
@Samsung9alaxy

Nice video! What happens if you manually set an aperture on the lens and leave the shutter dial on Program?
@dangerpowers123
6 жыл бұрын
Samsung9alaxy I looked into that and as I'd hoped it would give appiture priority but it doesn't. So not 100% sure really
@davidhelvering
6 жыл бұрын
Choosing this setting would result in potentially incorrect exposures. The camera does not know what aperture you have selected until you press the shutter button. When it meters for the Program mode, it will pick an aperture that it thinks is appropriate for your scene (and by the way it tends to choose the smallest aperture possible until it is forced to shoot wide open). If you have not engaged the "A" setting on the lens, it cannot set the aperture it chose. So for example, pointing my AE-1P out the window right now with the shutter set to Program but aperture on manual, its saying that the aperture should be f/8. If I were to take a picture with any other aperture, my exposure would be off (according to the meter). It's choosing the shutter speed to match f/8, not f/4 or whatever else I had chosen. Hope that helps.
