Thanks for this. There is something about the C70 image that is (excuse the lame terminology) maybe 5-10% more filmic. Probably just the slightly softer/smoother look and marginally less magenta in the skin. Lots of benefits to the C80 for most of the work that I do, but when it comes down to it I highly doubt any of the clients and agencies I work for are going to notice a difference so I'm not rushing out to get a C80 at this point. Will see what the future holds but I'm glad I haven't got the immediate urge!

Absolutely. The main draw to the C80 for me initially was honestly just the added SDI. Which sounds crazy for that to be enough for me to want to upgrade haha. But the inability to run a proper clean feed out (for client / director monitor) while still sending the UI to my external monitor was always something that limited the C70 for me on a lot of shoots. So glad they added it!

This is by far the best image comparison I've seen with these two so far. Thank you for shooting real scenes and including the wave forms! 🍻 My takeaway is that the C70 definitely still has more of a "look", and might be a HAIR better in shadow detail, but I was surprised to see that I liked the C80s highlights and color a bit better. None of these very small differences though are nearly as impactful as full frame with triple native gain. I'm sold.

Thanks for making this, I watched on my big monitor, few things I see better is the ISO but I do like the colors I saw out of the C80 when you were filming your dog outside. Specifically in the shadows, it looked more pleasing. Also, how sharp your eyes were with the C80, that's always been tough in certain corporate scenarios with the C70.

The subjects on the C70 footage have a three dimensional quality to them. On the other hand, I like how you can see people’s eyes more clearly on the C80 due to the sharper image.

Great comparison and test footage. With the C80 not having a dual gain sensor I thought there would be more of a difference between the two. Both camera's appear to capture a similar amount of highlight and shadow detail, props to Canon for that. The AF difference between the two is noticeable. Having used the C70 since launch, the AF is good, but felt slightly outdated even back then. There is a reason Canon has decided to continue to sell the C70, the footage from that camera has such a great feel to it, that being said, it's nice to see the C80 is not the step back in dynamic range performance everyone was worried about.

The best comparison video so far that I watched on this topic. Thank you for all the ISO tests in lowlight. Can tell that 12800 has far less noise on the c80, but in lowlight there is some noise (on your face) so It's not super clean like I was thinking. Your dogs are great models haha
@alexmainwaring

From what I hear, ideally you would want to set Base ISO to 12800 then set the actual ISO to 6400 for cleaner image with less noise while still having the advantage of low light shooting.

The c70 jhas a green tint reminding me of the original clog of the c100. When I combine with it with other cameras I notice it. The c800 has more magenta like the mirrorless. The extra green makes it look more like movies we seen. I usually dont see that much magenta on films.

@@creativegreatsvisuals it seems like a green bias compared to using canon mirrorless. When I watch tv or films grades I dont see much magneta much at all. I would say a little more green will balance the images more with warmer colors than too much magneta/purple. When I use the R5 for photos I am always trying to get purple out of my images. Thanks for the video! Nice comparison. For a workhorse camera that the c70 has been, the c80 is a great successor. The features out weigh the slightly better latitude in the c70. Perhaps the c80 is more clinical looking, but who cares. It's a workhorse camera ;)

Really great comparison. Thank you for including the waveforms, side by sides, and 1:1 clips. The C80 detail is clear on a 4k monitor, and I was pleasantly surprised that the dynamic range was pretty much the same as the C70. The C70 reaches a tiny bit more into the shadows, but the difference is subtle. As a C70 owner (and soon-to-be C80 owner), I'm looking forward to the better AF, increased detail, SDI, cleaner high ISOs, slightly larger bokeh for subject separation, and a few other workflow wins. Overall a subtle difference between the cameras, but looking forward to the upgrade.

I'm really impressed at how well they match considering the brand new sensor design. Some of the exteriors seem slightly off, but its very close. How did you find the autofocus compared? It also looks like the 120p on the C70 is slightly sharper than the FF c80 c120, I'm assuming that's because of the line skipping that's happening to achieve the 120p from a 6K sensor. Did you test the Super 35 120p on the c80 to compare that detail vs c70?
@JordanPulmano

Agreed. You can see in some situation where the DGO is giving that “HDR” lift in the shadows but it’s very minimal. AF in the C80 is noticeably stronger. It still struggles in some low light situations which you can tell in a few of these, but in some other situations while shooting on the C400 (different camera but same AF system) it handles so much better than the C70!

@@JordanPulmano Great to know, I think the most exciting part for me is that Canon still made the sensors Dual Pixel, I personally find the smoothness of the focus pulls more desirable over sony, but that also could be a lens to lens thing possibly too. Its possible that in the future they might be able to add the DGO circuitry to read out the data from the split photosite just like the c70/c300 does. It would be a new camera, but still being dual pixel is a big deal in that regard.

Interesting to see all the different takes. Everyone is seeing something a little bit different. For me, where other folks see filmic softness in the C70, I see lesser detail. And for me, sharpness and detail are different things. I own a C70 that I generally enjoy, but the image in certain lighting situations feels a bit dull ... like it needs that additional detail. Also, C80 is noticeably cleaner at 12,800 (check the gray shirts at 4:34). I would use that C80's 12,800 for documentary in a hot sec.

That's why it's good that it has a much more usable second base ISO compared to the FX6/FX3. Personally I'd say the cases where I actually NEED 12,800 ISO make up around 0.5% of what I shoot. So I was always annoyed with the FX6 that there's nothing between 800 and 12,800.
