I've basically been stuck with this lens for around 5-6 years, since I don't have the ability to upgrade easily. Bought a Canon 1200d Kit, left it at that and I entered the world of photography. I personally don't like it very much because of how finicky it is, mostly with focus, and for lacking in sharpness (or, rather, for almost never properly focusing with af, always having room for improvement manually which is frustrating itself because of how oddly sticky and loose the focus ring can be). I also dislike how loud it can get as someone who only has this 1 piece of equipment to take to shows and other activities with people around. I'm really interested in astrophotography, which is a demanding type of shooting I know, but this lens isn't exactly helping here either thanks to its focusing issues and lack of fine control overall. It can be frustrating to work with for sure is what I'm trying to get at, though for a kit lens and to a beginner it gets the job done and you most likely won't notice its softness.

My opinion. I have this lens, purchased with 1300D (my first digital camera) some years ago. It is good for very beginner, just tu learn the basic of photography, then you need something better. My is remaining as spare part for emergency.

My EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 STM is church mouse quite. It doesn’t make a sound and focuses supper fast. I use this lens on my Canon 90d & C100 MKII. This is one of the lenses that allows for facial lock autofocus on my C100 MKII. I have every STM lens except the 24-105mm.

I also have the EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 STM now. Yes, it's super quite and it focuses fast! I'm glad that you found great uses for this kit lens and you're still enjoying it even if you have so many lenses!

The newer EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-56 STM has image stabilization and is quieter. I eventually picked up an EF 24-105mm f/3.5-5.6 STM. This is the only EF STM canon made. It adapts perfectly onto my R6MKII.

Thank you, Chris! Lenses that are mounted on a full frame camera tend to deliver a better image quality. The big sensor is using more of the lenses glass. With and APS-C sensor, due to the crop factor, a lot of glass (from the edges) is left unused. I simply couldn`t mount my 18-55mm on a Canon 5D Mark 3, it doesn't fit, I didn`t wanted to force it in. Either way, hope that my explanation helped!

@@WalterVermeir Thank you very much! It is a very crowded space nowadays. This is the reason for the limited reach. I try to bring good lens reviews + other videos where I share some wisdom. Buying good gear at half the price is always a good thing. Owning that gear, even if it is not the latest and greatest, it doesn`t matter. It allows us to enjoy the process, the experience with photography, and that is priceless.

Same lens situation. I accidentally twisted out my focus ring while it's on AF mode and that felt like it's rock solid but afterall, still able to twist it out. however the lens was detached. I only did it once. Will that gonna damage the lens? It's making a loud autofocusing noise, is that normal for this type of lens or that signifies that it got damaged? I'm new to this environment so pardon me. :))
@apertureatlas

By default this lens makes a lot of noise when focusing. If you noticed more noise now, after the incident, most probably the focusing motor took some damage. It is quite easy to harm the motor because it has a lot of plastic. On the newer versions, that have the STM motor, this issue doesn`t appear too often. If the autofocus still works on your lens (even with the louder noises), it is ok, you can still use it for a while. If not... it`s a good thing that this lens is cheap, so it can be replaced more easily (maybe with a better one, like the Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM). These were my thoughts. :)

Thinking of getting a used Canon 1100D that comes with particular lens for $170, i love taking pictures but never had a dslr and im buzzing to start, would you recommend this?
@apertureatlas
2 жыл бұрын
Hi! It is important for a beginner to start with a dslr camera. If it`s cheap, it`s even better. Canon 1100D is a dslr camera. It`s not great, but it`s definitely better than a cheap compact camera. You will learn a lot of things thanks to it. If you also want to shoot video, consider getting a Canon 70D, 200D or 250D, because they have flip screens and dual pixel AF (fast focusing on video). If you only want to do photography, the 1100D will be ok as a starting point.

Got this kit-lens with my EOS250D, at first it felt nice and it met my expectations :D but after a half year when you start to get more into photography; you are starting to feel it's inadequacy. In short it's a good starter lens, also it's cheap. The most cons about this lens that I've felt was which it has no stabilization option. Oh btw, alot of thanks for that great content Mr.Aperture Atlas :)

Good observation! Yes, after gaining some experience you start to feel it's inadequacy, being cheap and without image stabilization. I also made a video about the 18-55mm IS STM lens, which has stabilization. The IS STM version would stay longer in a photographer's camera bag. Thanks for the kind comment! 😀

I got this kit lens with my 200D when I didn't know any better. I found it to be exceptionally awful and not because of the aperture. The autofocus is slow and very loud. Manual focusing is almost impossible. The front element rotates so you can't even use a lens hood or some filters. AND it doesn't have image stabilization! It was a pain to use. I sold it after a few months and bought a used IS STM 3.5-5.6 model for the same price. It's soooo much better!

I am glad to hear you bought the IS STM version. I made a video about that lens as well. It's great that you figured out what you needed. Oftentimes, people (especially beginners), stick with the kit lens that comes with the camera and don't do further research.

I have a Canon 600D (Rebel T3i). Can I use a 50mm 1.8 lens replacing the kit lens 18-55mm 3.5?
@apertureatlas

Yes. When you need the 50mm, you take off the 18-55mm and vice versa. One is a prime lens, one is a zoom lens, so depending on the situation, you can choose what works for you.

@apertureatlas

All EF-S 18-55mm less deliver almost the same-exact image quality, so an upgrade is not really necessary. But, if you want a quiet focusing motor + image stabilization, I would recommend getting the Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM (I also made a video about it. It is called: " Canon 18-55mm IS STM Lens Review - 12 Things " ) . Quiet focusing motor + image stabilization is even more useful if you record videos.

I bought a canon 250d (the seller never used the camera, she won in a raffle and put to sell) last week and will arrive tomorrow, however the camera will came with the lens from your video, this lens don't have the IS like model 2 and STM, this is not good right? This lens need the IS or not? Another fact is about the Canon deleted all information about this lens in they website, you can just find about model ii and STM. This is a bad lens compared to the model ii and STM ? Thank you
@apertureatlas
2 жыл бұрын
This not a bad lens compared to the model II and STM. When it comes to image quality (sharpness, distortion), the performance of these 3 18-55mm lenses in nearly identical. The only downside of this lens is the noisy Autofocus motor, but you shouldn`t worry about this, nor should you worry about the lack of IS. You can still do a good job with it. Nice camera, the Canon 250D. I recommend getting a Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 STM lens also. The wide aperture of the 50mm lens will let you get creative in low light conditions.

There are no significant differences between 18-55mm f3.5-5.6 STM and the 18-55mm f4-5.6 STM. They produce almost the exact same results when it comes to image quality. The only notable difference: The 18-55mm f4-5.6 STM is almost 1cm shorter. The f4 one is newer, released in 2017, while the f3.5 one was released in 2012.

That is a simple image with targets to test the sharpness, a test chart . A similar test chart can be bought from eBay. Test charts are also in camera stores like B&H. Even if I did find inspiration from other KZitemrs. All of the photos from that image were made by me, also the targets. I am not saying it is my original creation, but that image was 100% made by my hand. We mustn't reinvent the wheel every time for a sharpness review. There are a very few things that are 100% original. Test charts were around before vlogging became popular and KZitemrs made their own, but they didn`t invent test charts.
