I love Jem Schoefield's tutorial videos. At 6:28 it is so interesting that you use the joystick to pick the priority face to track. You simply use the joystick to move the selection between the rectangles, and the camera jumps tracking on that face immediately. This face tracking is different on the XF400/XF405 with its touch screen. There you cannot use the joystick to pick the priority face (a bummer), you have to use the touch screen to touch a face to start tracking, and you have to touch the Tracking Cancellation icon on the screen to stop tracking to get back the rectangles on the faces. This interface with the joystick on the C300 seems to be much faster, and more intuitive to operate, especially when you use the viewfinder. When too many faces are detected, however, using the joystick is not that convenient as using the touch screen. I am looking forward to watching the touch screen operated C200 tutorial videos from Jem.

Oh boy, I wish the c100 Mark II had half these focus tools. I can't see c300 users choosing EF lens as much as they would CN lens or other manual lens making these focus assesses redundant to them. Now if only Canon could let us have face tracking on the c100 Mark II with none STM lens... *wink, wink* :D

I really like these focus features. What if you have 5 people in the frame strattled like both of your subjects, ( 5 deep ), would it challenge the af-dual focus system and possibly only focus 2 points instead of 5?

Great video - thanks! I noticed that Focus Assist works a lot less accurately in CLog2/C.Gamma versus the CLog/C.Gamma. I was wondering if you noticed this difference as well, and knew how to improve its accuracy in CLog2?

+Bruce Bracken The Focus Assist feature will not always perform as you may expect in Canon Log 2/CG. This is due to the lack of contrast in the image -- one of the ingredients that Dual Pixel Auto Focus relies on. Original Canon Log is not as flat of a curve as Canon Log 2, so it produces slightly more contrast in the Log image, and works better in some circumstances. The best advice I can give you for Clog2/CG is to aim at an area of the image where contrast is obvious -- like the eye/eyebrow. Additionally, if you combine Focus Assist with peaking it will help you in maintaining focus.

Excellent question and observation from Bruce, and reasonable answer from Brent. My observation is exactly the same and not specific to Canon. On photography AF even on a mirrorless camera, the AF accuracy is completely independent of the ISO and shutter speed, it depends only on the aperture/iris. On video the AF is really dependent on the ISO; if your screen is dark in video, the camera will not be able to focus. My Sony A9 is a lowlight monster, in photography mode it can AF in near darkness, but not so in video; in video, only when I increase the gain to make the screen brighter, only then video AF starts working excellently. Video AF and photography AF are totally different technologies even on mirrorless cameras; actually, video cameras are mirrorless cameras without photography functions.

Benjamin alludes to my question. Just purchased a C300 Mark II, slated to arrive next week. I also have a C100 Mk II and love the camera. So, my question is does the C300 Mark II work on all Canon lenses with AF feature or only a few? If it only works with a few which ones?

+William Ridenour This is a great question! If it is the Dual Pixel Focus Guide feature you are referring to, it will work with pretty much all Canon autofocus lenses (those with EF mounts). There are specific instances where it would not work and those are either when focus is already being automatically adjusted using one-shot AF or continuous AF, when the aperture value is f/11 or larger, or when a manual focus lens is attached to the camera. We hope this answers your question!

Hi Several conditions where Dual Pixel Focus Guide cannot be used are: 1) While the focus is being adjusted automatically using one-shot AF or continuous AF. 2) When the aperture value used is F11 or larger. 3) When a manual focus lens is attached to the camera, except for compatible EF Cinema lenses. A list is on page 222 of the camera manual. If you have other questions our Cinema support agents can help you. You can contact them 24/7 at 855-246-3367. We hope this information helps.

When trying to use the Focus Guides that start at 10:22, with CP.2 glass I can't seem to get them to appear. Works fine with my L-Series lens in MF but not at all with third party EF mount prime glass. Is that right?
@CanonUSA

Hi editor-d. While we can only verify how the Dual-Pixel Focus Guide works with our own lenses, we do know that it may not work with lenses that are strictly manual focus lenses. This may explain why it isn't working with your third party primes, but it is working with your L-series lenses when they are set to focus manually. We hope this information helps.

Hi. There are certain settings that would prevent it from being used, like when the shutter speed is slower than 1/30, 1/25 or 1/24, depending on what the system frequency is set to. It also cannot be used if you are using slow & fast motion recording. We hope this helps.

Good information, but unfortunately doesn't apply to my situation. I did a 3 camera shoot yesterday and all the settings were identical. it only worked on 1 of the 3 cams. The two cams that it was greyed out on did not have the grips attached. Could this be an issue?

After testing the removal of the grip from our own EOS C300 Mark II bodies, we still have the option available, so it is likely not related to the grip.
