One thing you didn't mention which is a positive feature of 'old school' 35 mm film SLR's from the time period the Ftb was manufactured: I believe the Ftb was completely mechanical; the battery just powered the light meter. Battery dies; the camera still operates except for the light meter. And it represents film photography distilled to simplicity without all the gizmos and complexity that came along later. Just a basic, solid machine that gets the job done. The Canon Ftb was one of the candidates under consideration when I was deciding on my first 35mm film SLR but I held off making a purchase for a number of years and ended up purchasing a Nikon FM; another basic, no frills mechanical film SLR that just keeps taking photographs. There's a lot to be said for simple, solid construction.

I bought a FTb new in 1977. I still have it. I am getting it ready to use again after several years of not using it. It always took great pictures and worked good. I have a telephoto lens for it and am looking forward to using it again. I also have recently purchased Canon DSLR cameras. I based the brand bought on the performance of the FTb and have not been disappointed by Canon cameras. Good review. I agree with your conclusions. Good camera to use! Thanks.

Definitely, I mostly use this Canon film camera for black and white photography. Good point about not fully rewinding the film into the cartridge, Dan. When I went to get my film developed at a photography store this young lady advised me that I should have rolled it all into the film cartridge; but she was a bit young to know about film photography.

I bought one of these in the early 70's and still have two of them. I'm a 50+ year Nikon user, but at the time they were introduced, the FTB's semi-spot (was it 12 degrees, Dan?) metering beat anything Nikon had on the market. I've replaced light seals and had both cameras CLA'd a few times, but I've never had a repair on either of them. Great review of an amazing camera! Thanks!

I always rewound the leader into the film cassette. I never used a leader extractor. I pried the flat end of the film cassette off with a can opener and pulled out the roll through the open end. Of course you have to use a film changing bag or a completely dark room when pulling the film out of the cassette, loading it onto a reel, and loading the reel into a processing tank. Also, you shouldn't have to hold the rewind release button down the whole time. It should click into place, if not immediately but soon after you start rewinding.....unless something is wrong with the release mechanism. I enjoyed your video. I purchased my Canon FTb(N) with the quick loading (QL) mechanism, like yours, in 1976. It still takes good pictures. I have added an AE-1, an A-1, an EF, and an F-1 to my Canon collection. My daughter is now the owner of a black FTb that I bought for my Father in 1977 while I was overseas in the Navy. I have stayed with Canon into the digital era, but that is another story.

Dan, would the kit lens for a manual camera have an auto setting on the aperture ring? If one were to set the aperture ring to A on the FTB what would happen? Could it be that the FTB actually came with a different lens?
@louiebunbun
Жыл бұрын
You can't force the aperture setting to green "A" or "o" on fully manual Canon F series or you'll break the aperture ring, Canon intentionally locked that on them and only work on mostly Canon A series which has the automatic operation. Canon also explicitly warned about this regard in manuals of Canon F series

Hi Dan, great video! I've been playing with this camera for the last month! Your video helped me with film loading and rewinding. I love the FTb! ...but I want to start shooting some long exposure night pics. When I use the wire "remote," and switch the shutter time to 'b,' it sounds like the shutter is releasing right away even while holding down the remote button. (The shutter release button on the FTb does not depress, but I'm assuming that's normal as the wire "remote" depresses the small area 'inside' the shutter release button.) Is the noise normal? I don't want to take a million night shots if it turns out my camera doesn't function in "b" mode. Thanks!
@DanBullmanPhotography

Hi Jonathan! Thanks for the comment. I'm glad you liked the video. I think the sound you are hearing is normal. I've shot some long exposure photos with my Canon FTb and the camera makes noise when I press the shutter button and another one when I release it. If you're still worried it might be worth shooting one roll and getting it developed to see if the results come out okay.

I just got one! Could you explain how the depth-of-field preview works? You are supposed to pull the lever towards the lens right? +mewmewmew Thanks for the question. I honestly hadn't tried using the DOF preview before you mentioned it. I just tried it and couldn't really tell the difference looking through the viewfinder. I wouldn't think you would have to press the shutter, since yeah that would waste your film.

@DanBullmanPhotography
8 жыл бұрын
Hi, thanks for watching! Are the two black vertical lines on the far right side of the viewfinder? If so, those are supposed to be there. Those lines give information about aperture and metering. If the lines aren't on the right edge of the viewfinder then perhaps it is just damage to the viewfinder. In any case, even if it is damage, it won't affect your photos. Hope you enjoy shooting with your Canon FTb ql. Please feel free to contact me if you have any other questions.

@DanBullmanPhotography

+Zoe Sabandal It needs a battery to run the meter. I put a link in the description to where you can buy one online. One of the things I like about the FTb is that you don't need a battery to take photos

Hi! how exactly do I meter with this camera? I know that the needle has to be in the middle for a proper exposure, but it only moves when I adjust the shutter speed. My professor tells me that the camera already meters and compensates for the aperture. For example, I meter for something without changing the aperture because the blades don't move until the shutter is released, but when I release the aperture blades change and I don't know if that affects how my image comes out.
@DanBullmanPhotography
8 жыл бұрын
Hi Christopher, yes the needle only moves when you adjust the shutter speed. But there is a separate needle (it looks like a circle) that moves when you adjust the aperture. You need to match up both needles to make a good exposure. I would also recommend downloading a light meter app for your smartphone to have a second point of reference for exposure settings. I hope this helps.

@DanBullmanPhotography

Hi Derick! I think it has to do with the camera's ability to meter. If you're shutter speed is set too fast or too slow the camera will not be able to give you a reading. Trying setting your shutter to a faster speed (i.e. 1/250 or 1/500) and see if that gets rid of the red circle.

It might be jammed or something. Make sure to pull the film rewind lever/button all the way up. If that doesn't release the back try to gently pry the film door open with a finger while lifting the button. And if that fails I would recommend taking it to a local camera shop to have someone look at it. It's hard for me to diagnose the problem without holding the camera in my hands. Best of luck!

Hi! So I'm in desperate search of trying to figure out how to successfully double expose using the canon ftb. I've read the manual about a 100 times and searched the Internet regarding a double exposure. How do you rewind the film without advancing to the next frame? Thank you so much!
@DanBullmanPhotography
8 жыл бұрын
+Michelle Williams Hi Michelle! This is something I've struggled with as well. There is no way to cock the shutter without advancing the film, so you have to actually rewind it manually to get back to the previous frame. According to the manual, you need to depress the film rewind button on the bottom of the camera, then rewind the film rewind crank 7/8 turn. This is all on page 42 of the manual, if you're looking for it. Does this make sense?
@michellewilliams6980

#4 "Wind the film advance lever while lightly holding the rewinding crank... Wind the film advance lever once more." This is where it goes wrong for me.
@DanBullmanPhotography
8 жыл бұрын
+Michelle Williams Yeah, it's pretty confusing. I tried to shoot some double exposures with this camera a few months ago and I was unsuccessful. I'll have to give it another shot and see if I can get it right this time. If I can figure it out I'll make a video about it. Canon just didn't design this camera to make it easy for double exposures. A number of Nikon cameras from this time period are much easier for making multiple exposures...

+meljesst Hello! Like the Canon FTb, the TLb does not need a battery to operate. It does have a light meter, which needs a battery. But the light meter is not essential to using the camera. There is no built-in flash, so you would need to connect an external flash with a PC sync cord. You would need batteries for the flash.
