Casey Neistat, one of the most popular, successful, and prolific Vloggers around, recently touted the CANON G7X camera as his absolute favorite for Vlogging. This was no trivial claim given that Casey has drawers full of digital cameras, and his office/studio is directly above a NYC camera store.
Since we’re in the process of planning press coverage of the upcoming MakerCon and Bay Area Maker Faire in California, and want to extensively Vlog both events and our journey, we set out to see if Casey was overstating the G7X performance, or if he was being straight with us.
This initial test took place Tuesday afternoon in Chiba Japan around 4:00 pm. The G7X was used right out of the box with the manufacturer’s default settings. The only change we made was to flip the language from Japanese to English.
The camera was held in the right hand, which was slightly extended chest high while we walked down several of the streets. Almost all of the footage was shot continuously, though we’ve cut out the boring bits so you won’t be tempted to doze off.
The net result was that, at least in our opinion, the G7X is truly awesome for active Vlogging. It’s a dream to use, easy to handle, produces sharp, clear, stabilised video and stills. It’s exactly what we’ve been looking for to improve our video production capabilities.
Of course, it’s not a full fledged DLSR and doesn’t pretend to be. However, in its price class, it really outshines all the competitors, even Sony, for this particular application.
