Amazing job with this whole video! The g7x is an outstanding camera, very well-exampled from what you've shown. The s120 is more suitable/affordable for me personally, but this video is VERY helpful for everyone trying to decide on which camera is right for them. Thank you sir :)

Thank you so much for your Review! I am currently looking for a vlogging camera.. A huge 'con' of the GX7 is the price.. :/ It's about 500€ which is quite a lot :/ At many times you're not focused with the GX7 during the 'selfiemode'.. :/ I think I will purchase it on Amazon, test it and maybe sending it back afterwards.. Thanks! :)

HI! DominoKati Thanks! Glad you found the review helpful. Now I have been using the G7X for a while I have found the autofocus takes a little longer than the S120 to switch focus to my face and that means changing the way you film which is something I'm still getting used to. It is easily overcome you simply have to pause for a moment before you begin speaking and allow the camera to focus on your face before you begin speaking or the start of the shot will be out of focus.If you watch recent MoreZoella vlogs it will demonstrate what I mean in longer shots than mine, she often does not give the camera enough time to focus before speaking so the initial second or so of each clip looks like a soft focus transition but its just the camera is out of focus, but then it quickly finds its focus just not as quick as the S120.

Hi! Abby Smith Thanks! Glad you found the video helpful. Yeh - I try to respond to all the comments & questions if I can even the bad ones, but many content creators don't. I find it strange when youtubers talk of community & even "loving" their subscribers when they don't take any serious amount of time to engage directly with them beyond a one way dialogue in their vlogs - I'm sure for big channels even a semi automated pasted thank you would be appreciated. But for me the community aspect is equally as important as the videos, the human interaction keeps it real and not just virtual. The S120 is a fantastic vlogging camera, probably the bench mark camera right now so its a good place to be, beyond the S120 the increases in quality are not equally matched by the increases in quality so it comes down to budget. Best wishes with your channel.

Technologically speaking, the G7X and S120 aren't even in the same league despite their similar physical appearance. The G7X has a much larger sensor than the S120, so it's superior low light performance should not come as a surprise. What is most impressive to me when comparing these two cameras is how close in performace the S120 is to the G7X while only costing half of what the G7X does. I got my S120 for $275 (USD) last week and it came with two extra batteries, an extra charger, a soft case, and a 16GB Class 10 SD card. The best price I could find for the G7X was $570. And that was just for the camera alone. I'll take the S120 at less than half the price of the G7X any day. Because if I'm going to spend that much on a point and shoot, I'll get the Sony RX100 mk III over the G7X.
@RobertsLondon
9 жыл бұрын
HI! Rat Island Crew Yes you are right and it is a point I try to touch on in the video, the G7X + spare battery costs approximately double the price of an S120 right now, the G7X is better to varying degrees in different scenarios but not twice as good. Its true of all technology and in fact most things you can buy, percentage increases in price can be matched in quantity but are rarely matched by equal percentage increases in quality and the higher in price you go the more the increases diminish. And this is an interesting point because many reviews find the G7X & RX100 M3 very similar for video but the RX100 M3 slightly better for still photography, however the RX100 M3 in some country's costs around 30% more than the G7X but its not that much better.

ROBERTS LONDON This is a great point. Glad you touched on it. I just purchased the S120, and so far I love it. The G7X looks outstanding here, but the price difference for me was too much to go with the G7X. Hi Robert, I just wanted to say thanks for you review about the GX7 vs S120. It helped me decided what's good on my pocket book vs having the best equipment for money I don't have. Any good Vlogger/Blogger will know it's about content. I loved toward the end when you talked about not waiting for something better and get what's available now. I posted your review on me Facebook and a lot of people watched your video. In my opinion your video was well done, I like how you talked through the video while opening the box. I see that GX7 will be great for low light vlogging in intimate settings because no click sound. I always loved Canon cameras. GX7 was highly recommended as best Vlogging camera for the price. It's not like I'm going to run out and get a Blackmagic Cinema Camera. Thanks for a great review, Tina.

I just got this camera and the blurry background when vlogging is killing me. It's like it's not sure whether to focus on what's behind me or not and keeps going in and out of focus on the background. It's super annoying. Also, the background is a little TOO blurry. Do you know how to fix the focus issue and also how to make it less blurry?

HI! +Mommy Etc There is another video on my channel about the auto focus of the G7X. But to cut a long story short, make sure you don't touch the screen when holding it backwards or it will focus on the area you touch and you cant see where you are touching.
@MommyEtc

+ROBERTS LONDON I actually saw that video and I'm pretty sure I'm not touching the screen when I vlog. I was hoping you knew something else I should know lol. Do you know if there is a way to adjust how much bokeh is in the background? Also, what are the best video settings to record in? Should I use "standard" mode or "manual?" Thanks for answering!
@RobertsLondon
9 жыл бұрын
HI! +Mommy Etc It is very difficult to rotate the camera without touching the screen so if you don't have a little tripod you can use as a handle and don't want to flip the selfie screen up - flip the screen up just 45 degrees so your hand is underneath it so then you cant inadvertently touch it. The only setting you should record in is movie mode, the video camera symbol mode on the dial, as it is the only one that films in 60fps. When you film in movie mode and if you have editing software like final cut pro x that supports 60fps your uploads will be in 1080-60p quality not just 1080p (Check out the quality settings of my latest vlogs for an example). 60fps will give much better results than the 30fps recorded in all other modes and in movie mode I think you can only manually override a couple of settings but unless your in a fixed position with fixed lights I would stick with auto.

HI! DrewsLife Thanks! Glad you found the video useful. The S120 is the most compact and portable of the two if portability is key for you but the image quality of the G7X is better but the camera is also bigger. The G7X is almost identical in video mode to the Sony RX100m3 but Sony will very soon launch the RX100IV which will have 4k but it will only film in 4k for up to 5 minutes (probably due to heat dissipation issues over 5 minutes). I'm super keen to get 4k but the price point for one with other qualities as good as the G7X is around double the cost of a G7X right now.

+Mayly Yvang on average total recordeing time for s120 is about 20 minutes and G7X nearly 1 hour - seems to largely depend on how much you flex auto focus and expose by changing location & light during filming

HI! MystoHD In most situations the iPhone is a fantastic camera and I still use it to capture quick video clips that feature in my vlogs all the time, but at night in the city the S120 performs does better and the low light performance of the G7X is outstanding.
@Lupin788
9 жыл бұрын
MystoHD Maybe if you can hold the iPhone very still, but the 5S doesn't have optical image stabilization like the S120. Apple only added OIS to the 6 Plus. When you're walking around vlogging, the point & shoot cameras have a clear advantage.
@RobertsLondon
9 жыл бұрын
Hi! Lupin788 Yes your right the canon compacts do have advantages over older phones and I really expand on this topic in my latest vlog about the G7X. The iPhone 6 plus is a serious blow to the compact camera market, it makes many previous generation cameras completely obsolete. Luckily for vloggers Sony make the iPhone camera components so they are well aware of this and are really upping the quality of compact cameras to keep them relevant over and above phones, which is great for vloggers looking for a little higher quality.
@TerenceGranchester
9 жыл бұрын
MystoHD Im a vloggher and i have both iPhone 5s and S120, so trust me: S120 is better by far in every condition :-)
@RobertsLondon
9 жыл бұрын
Hi! Terence Granchester Yes the S120 is an improvement in quality especially in low light over a phone & the G7X is an improvement over the S120. But my point is they are not necessary improvements to get started and if you watch my latest vlog I prove it by shooting it using an iPhone. But as I discuss in my latest vlog I think its important for every vlogger to aspire to get better equipment in order to shoot the best quality they can, but it is also important to understand it is not the key to success. Apple use Sony produced cameras in the iPhone and they are both striving to replicate DSLR quality so I would imagine in just 1 or 2 generations of the iPhone they will equal the quality of the S120. This is why they are producing super compacts like the G7X, because phones have made lower priced cameras obsolete, meaning manufacturers must concentrate on the top end.

@RobertsLondon
9 жыл бұрын
Hi! Erik Conover Thanks! The G7X is amazing when you get the hang of it but it does take a while to get used to. A couple of tips would be - start to pause for a couple of seconds before speaking to camera, the G7X autofocus is much slower than the S110 so it takes longer to focus on your face, if you do not pause the start of the shot will be focused on the background and it will then transition to your face and because of the increased quality it is very noticeable. Don't use the selfie screen unless you want to frame the background it gives you crazy eyes. Get a "handle" I use a manfrotto pixi mini tripod. The touch screen is bigger and super sensitive, when you hold it backwards it is easy to accidentally switch from autofocus to manual by touching it with your palm or fingers which will ruin the shot. You can flip the screen just 90 degrees to give you a better grip and stop you touching the screen - but trust me the pixi mini is great, it gives you amazing grip and control because of the ball head in all situations but especially riding bikes etc and it is a great ball head pocket size tripod. I made another video covering all of this on my channel - check it out when you have a spare 20 minutes.

Hi! ***** Tell them to watch the follow up video on my channel about the G7X autofocus - it may help resolve some of their focus issues. Someone told me pointlessblog had started using the handle I suggested but I don't know him or watch his vlogs - but if he does that will help with the focus.

this is what a review/comparison should be like! I was wondering the audio with the g7x seemed to pick up more sounds, which you mentioned as a good thing, but for vlogging that is mostly based on speaking to the camera, how good do you think it is? Thanks!
@RobertsLondon
9 жыл бұрын
Hi! Joel Micallef Thanks! When you consider how tricky getting good audio is even with a good stand alone microphone in perfect conditions, the built in microphones on both canon cameras do a pretty good job considering you are holding them some distance from your head and they have no shielding. If you place your fingers over the mic holes while recording on both cameras they record their own mechanics you get noticeable clicking & winding noises. With the S120 these noises are very faintly noticeable all the time in very quiet conditions (eaisily edited out), but less so on the G7X. I'm guessing the G7X does not have much better mics, just better positioning and maybe less wind shielding etc, which means it picks up more external noises and less internal noise. You definitely have to work with both cameras to get the best content from them, which takes a little practice especially outdoors. For my latest vlog I just filmed a piece in the middle of London's Piccadilly Circus with the G7X and I was very aware I would need to wait for the wind and background vehicle noise to be at it lowest possible before I shouted at the camera. I ended up shouting to camera next to a stationary double decker bus because it shielded me from the wind which I knew only from previous experience would sound worse and be harder to edit than a bus engine. I hope that helps with your decision, if you have any further questions feel free to ask - best wishes with your channel!

Thanks so much for the review! I've been loving doing vlogs on another channel of mine lately, so I'm looking into buying a nice vlog camera. But I do have a question, could this camera be used for regular sit down videos as well? And can it be sat on a tri-pod? Sorry if those are silly questions! I'm just very new to the world of cameras! lol

HI! ***** Thanks! Glad you liked the review. Yes both the S120 & G7X have the threaded holes in the base required to screw a standard tripod base plate into. Both the S120 & G7X are suitable and widely used for both hand held vlogging and sit down tripod style vlogs. The G7X is ideal for sit down vlogs as the pop up selfie screen will help you frame your shot. Sometime next month I will be making another video about these cameras and vlogging cameras in general so if you have any further question please ask because the next video will largely be based on questions surrounding this video as they help me identify the information maybe missing or requiring further clarity from this review. Best wishes with your channel!

Good review, I remember watching this quite sometime ago. I eventually got the G7x and even did a video about how to get around some of those focusing issues. But honestly, I cannot deal with the motion blur with image stabilization. In pretty much every review i've seen no one has mentioned how bad the motion blur with IS is. For me it is a game changer, because I shoot a lot of video in low light situations and it gets annoying when 75% of shot are "fuzzy". I'm going to try shooting without IS at night to see if there is a significant difference, but much cheaper camera (Elph 110HS, IXY 960is) had no issues with IS at all... and those cameras are quite old lol.

Hi! +marcusbirdtv Marcus you have uncovered a whole new challenge I hadn't even considered - vlogging in low light if your black or have dark skin completion. I watched your video and to be honest I thought clay face made you look younger but it did make your skin complexion look lighter. Indoors its easily fixed with lighting. Out doors I think it would be both interesting and more importantly helpful for other black vloggers to see the challenges and hopefully the solutions to vlogging in low light if your black or have a darker completion. This is something you should definitely explore, if you were in London I would suggest we film standing side by side to see the difference skin tone makes and find camera setting solutions. I had a quick search and there are videos about photography settings for dark and light skin in studio settings but not vlogging in real life scenarios. First thing you need to establish though is if clay face is annoying only for you or if your viewers even notice? Anyway I subbed looking forward to seeing some of Jamaica

+ROBERTS LONDON Thanks for the quick reply! This actually sounds like an interesting collaborative video we could try out. I wasn't speaking about complexion at all in my review, but I see what you were saying. The "clay face effect" happens to both dark or lighter complected folk. I've been vlogging for a long time, and if footage is dark I just bump up the exposure and i'm fine with how it looks. The issue, which unfortunately is making me getting stressed about the G7x is that with my previous cameras, they don't do any "smoothing" of any kind via software. This means objects, building and people look normal when i'm editing. All I do is just bump up the exposure a bit here and there and things look fine. With the G7x what happens is that EVERYTHING looks soft and fuzzy. Buildings, people, the road and then there is horrible motion blur with the image stabilization system. If I knew these things beforehand I would have never purchased the G7X. I can't return it either because someone brought it to Jamaica for me and to try and get it back to the states would be a big ordeal. This was pretty shocking for me simply because i've never used a canon device that did this. I've vlogged with a Canon IXY960is, T2i, Canon Elph 110Hs a 5d Mark 3 and also the G7x, which is the only device that does "clay face". The only way to avoid it as i've said in my video is to shoot at 60FPS at night which is the only camera mode that retains standard detail, or become a settings ninja when shooting at 30FPS. But this baloons the vlog size, which is insane. Editing with footage shot on a 5d mark 3 doesn't even come close to half the size of a vlog shot at 60FPS with the G7X. I guess it's just a tough pill to swallow when you do significant research and don't realize these issues are there.
@RobertsLondon
8 жыл бұрын
+marcusbirdtv The only mode that actually films in 60fps is movie mode. All the other modes have more manual adjustment but they override and drop the fps setting. I shoot everything in full auto at 60fps in movie mode so yeah the file size's are huge. My latest edited 25 minute vlog is 12gb and will take 2.5 days to upload on standard London internet. But the image quality is good and stable for hand held and I don't colour grade the footage either. File size is not really a problem unless you daily vlog and then unless you have super fast upload speeds which most people dont it really limits you to sub 10 minute vlogs or you have to drop quality somehow by either dropping fps or compressing the video. Most of my vlogs with the G7X take 24 hours just to upload on standard BT internet in London - no super fast fibre optic in my area yet.
@MarcusBird
8 жыл бұрын
+ROBERTS LONDON I know about the different modes. I'm not sure what you shoot normally, but 30FPS is fine during the day. At night is when 60FPS is necessary to preserve detail as i've said. No way can i have a 10gigabyte vlog video when I make videos almost daily! It's a bit insane haha. Even though i use handbrake to compress my videos, having 1.5 gig videos is a pain. Either way man, these things just took me by surprise. As i've said, shooting with the 5d mark 3 doesn't ever have such massive file sizes or issues with "clay world" etc. But thanks for the feedback thus far!
@RobertsLondon

HI! +marcusbirdtv Virtually all my vlogs are shot in full movie mode at 60fps entirely in auto and I use final cut pro x to edit which can handle 60fps as many editing programmes dont. I have to use an external hardrive as my vlogs are up to an hour long. But if you look at the maximum quality available for my vlogs on youtube its 1080p60HD because I dont compress them either. Most daily vloggers upload with just 1080p if you look at their playback quality because you just cant upload 60fps fast enough but it does look better.

I am loving the overall delivery of the G7X, but I have heard terrible things about the battery life of both cameras when filming. Can you give me more info about this, and what to expect? Thank you
@RobertsLondon
9 жыл бұрын
HI! Maria de la Guardia The battery life of the G7X is a considerable improvement on the S120. The compact nature of the cameras means compact batteries, they will take still photos for days but the S120 will only film continuously on one charge (with a genuine battery in good condition) for just over 30 minutes. The G7X films continuously for 26.30 minutes and will do it 3 times on one charge. I purchased a spare battery when I ordered the G7X, having always used Canon compacts to vlog, I was aware how long battery life was in previous models and I didn't expect such an improvement. Im sure it will come in handy to avoid down time as charging time is also much longer.
@mariadelaguardia6167
9 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your quick reply! So, if I understand correctly the G7X will run for about an hour on one fully charged battery? (If I turn it on and off and shoot a few minutes at a time, as opposed to just straight filming) Hmmm. It is better than the S120, but I wish they would make them longer somehow. The Leica D-lux 107 can go for about 7 hours on one fully charged battery after all...
@RobertsLondon
9 жыл бұрын
Hi! Maria de la Guardia Yes you’re going to get at least 1 hour, which will probablybe long enough for most KZitem vloggers between charges. But I would still get a spare battery for travel & to avoid downtime charging. As I mention in the video, the Canon compact cameras are ideal for many KZitem vloggers style of filming but certainly not everyone’s requirements, as using a Canon compact camera for video means compromising in certain areas to gain in others.

How do you feel about the Canon Vixia mini X?
@RobertsLondon
9 жыл бұрын
HI! SoCalSupercars It looks like an ok camera, it will definitely do the job. I would guess it was designed and will mainly appeal to content creators on a budget & focusing on audio quality over visual quality. I know many users of the high end canon compacts like the G7X would like some of the Vixia mini's audio capabilities added to it especially external microphone capabilities There is a good review by CineastaProductions where at the end they compare footage from a number of cameras in low light & the visual quality does not look as good as the canon S120 (I would add if I was making a review of it I would have used sample footage including audio, because as it is the review is not actually that helpful for the cameras target market?). If you watch my latest vlog it covers my thoughts in depth about which camera you should look at, its a long one but it may be helpful. Best wishes with your channel.

HI! Songsak Limsirisantikun Thanks! Glad you liked the review. I produce most of the music tracks for my videos myself so yes maybe I play my music louder than most vloggers and louder than I should, I try to push the limits without drowning out the narrative. I test them through both MacBook speakers & headphones because they sound completely different but I guess everyone's playback equipment will sound different. I think music is also a personal preference I like soundtracks on vlogs but many vloggers dont use music & some comment they dislike it.

Hi! Nakisha Juarez Perfect! The iPhone 5s is a fantastic vlogging camera and I would recommend you use that to start with and just use the gopro for activities which would potentially destroy your phone. The iPhone has a great camera, Just remember to hold it landscape when filming or it will crop it square & you will get large back borders to your footage.I know you will be thinking well the gopro is a dedicated camera so should outclass the iPhone, but do not underestimate the iPhone because it is also a phone it is also a great camera and may actually improve the image quality and audio of your vlogs in many situations.

Really pleased that you mentioned early in this video that using an iPhone or equivalent was a suitable way to start vlogging so the only thing holding you back is yourself. I think most new vloggers don't need to invest in a camera straight away as for many it'll just be a fleeting fancy and they'll develop a taste for what they really need as time goes on.. good man! The rest of the video was super informative, thanks for putting this together.

ROBERTS LONDON Oh I did. I like your style and presentation. I find your reviews to be very thoughtful and professional. As usual, you cover just about everything I need to know to make an informed choice. You went above and beyond in your review of the Canon G7X and the S120. Keep up the good work that you do for others, like myself. Last thought, I'm from the states and I have always found Europe to be extraordinary. I live in the northeast part of the states so I'm not too far from wanting to visit there before I cannot. I am also thinking of the refugee crisis in Germany and the other countries in Europe that are taking in Syrian refugees during this humanitarian crisis and then I think of the US only taking in a paltry 100 thousand, or so, refugees. I've always thought I was more European than a US citizen. My ancestry, on my mother's side goes back to England. Maybe that's why. All I know is there's so much beauty and rich history there and I'd like to experience that one day soon. You have a very nice day and thank you for your response to my post.

HI! ayz01 Thanks glad you liked the video! You friend is right, your best camera is the one you have and with you, not the one you want with you. The iPhone is fantastic as its all the equipment you need to make a vlog, good image quality, portable, you can even edit using iMovie on the phone & then upload straight from the iPhone to KZitem. The iPhone 6 is a better all round piece of equipment than most vloggers with over 1 million subscribers started out with, however moving forward just like yourself everyone aspires to improve every aspect of whatever their doing given the opportunity, or at least should do. And better dedicated cameras will improve image quality, and editing software can produce slicker productions. But better equipment is not a substitute for hard work & practice or a source of better content (as you can see from my own subscriber & view numbers). Your iPhone 6 is no excuse not to vlog, its all you need to vlog! so Best wishes for your channel & future vlogs!
