Excellent points Eric. I was lucky and got my EF-M 55-200 used for $199 on Amazon about 2 years ago.

This lens, the sigma 56mm f1.4, and the canon 22mm f2 are all you need to cover everything. I would say the kit lens kinda sucks though. I'm comparing it to the sigma however

It may not even matter for large size prints. Because as the image enlarges, the viewing distance increases accordingly and the ability of the human eye to discern detail decreases with distance.

I had to downsize because of health issues New shoulder joint which is not up to the task of humping around large camera setups. I went with the canon M5 with the Macro lens and the 55-200 lens kit and as you say if your not blowing up the pictures to poster size the canonM50 is great and i have won competitions using the equipment and up against guys with the heavier set ups.

Agree 100% Eric. I re-evaluated my requirements a little while ago, and whilst I had an excellent Canon setup, I decided that less and less was coming out with me as I get a little older. So I went for a smaller mirrorless system (Olympus), which is fantastic and it has reinvigorated my photography. I can now carry in a small Billingham shoulder bag, what I used to have to put into a large backpack without a drop in the quality. I have never once looked back.

when you consider the R5 has 45mp over the m50 24 it does make a point. A lens i highly recommend to new M series users is the efm 18-150mm, it sits in a nice place between a sigma 100-400mm and the 11-22mm is you decide to go longer or wider, it also has a more versatile range with a good wide end and decent reach with the 150mm, with that focal range it is an excellent way to test out focal framing when you are considering getting a fast prime lens. the 55-200mm is also a great lens but it can be a bit on the tight side if its your only lens. the sigma 105mm ƒ1.4 on the M50 is great in very low light, i got that after having the 32mm ƒ1.4, those ƒ1.4 lenses do spoil it for other slower lenses lol Another way to do digital photography on the cheap is getting into using vintage lenses, some super sharp and wonderful rendering lenses in the vintage lines with great build quality, can't go wrong for $30

You are quite correct sir. My first camera was a Canon AE-1 in 1985, then added a 4X5 field camera, and a 500C Hasselblad.. I know a thing or two about heavy equipment. These days it's the M50, 15-45mm and the 55-200mm. The most expensive camera in the world will not make one a better photographer.

They’re both about the same as far as quality goes. So it really depends on whether you need a wider or more telephoto lens.

Great video Eric. I have both the RP and the M50 and, although I love the RP’s output with the 24-105L, I am normally grabbing the M50 to go out due to the convenience of carrying a lighter combo. Image quality is good enough for what I do. Ralph Goldstein, a landscape photographer in KZitem, recently gave up a Nikon ff kit due to back and neck problems while hiking and started ‘temporarily’ using his vlogging camera (M50) for stills. Almost a year later the temporary became permanent, he has had no IQ issues whatsoever in his work, normally shooting on a tripod at f8 or 11. Thanks for producing these videos about ‘photography on a budget’, love them and they really motivate folks to get into the hobby regardless of income bracket. I am hoping Canon will come up with a very small, $500-700 camera in the R mount soon. The RP is small for sure but not as small as the M50 and there are no really small zoom lenses to go with it yet (there are rumored 18-45 and 17-70 which could be APSC…fingers crossed).

Great review. Wish that you compare the R5, M50 against the M6 mk ii too.😄 May I know the ISO settings of the Canon M50 you used? Usually I will try to keep it at ISO 100 but sometime the image produced is too dark. 🤣 Hence, i crank up the ISO. I realised that even at ISO 6400 with the EF-M 55-200mm on a cloudy day produce pretty stunning results. 😄

Thanks! I shot these at ISO 200. I agree we’ve gotten very good results with the M50 at 6400. We have a video coming up comparing high ISO shots on the M50.

I have the M50 with the kit lens and the 55-200 and I plan on using them for at least a couple of years whilst I learn photography, I figure that if I cant get a good shot with those then I won’t get a good shot with the lenses that cost thousands either. I’ll invest more when I feel that i will actually benefit from the investment.

Ehy Eric, I have a M50 and I would like to buy the EF-m 55-200MM ef for it. I have to shoot and make videos indoor to horses. I'm a little scared about the poor light and how this lens will manage it keeping a good quality. What would you suggest? :)
@BillEricPhotography

You might want to try renting it and see if it works for you if it doesn't you could try prime lenses but that could get expensive. Also and adapted 70 to 200 2.8 would probably be the perfect lens. It's big and definitely more money but you might be able to find a used one that you can adapt to the m50

I wish they would make a 70-200 for the ef-m mount. I use a canon m6 mark ii, basically a m50, and I would really like a native 2.8 rather than using an adapter.
@BillEricPhotography

That would be fantastic. A traditional 70 to 200 is very cumbersome on the M50 because the body is so small. The adapter only makes it worse.

Hi Eric, just caught this vlog. I prefer doing stills using my Canon DSLRs for which I have EF glass but for "lightweight carry" purposes also use an M6 MkII and an M5. What you are saying is absolutely right but the following for what it's worth: I had a 55-200 lens but traded it for the 18-150 which I find is a more flexible option however and whilst I don't care too much for mounting EF glass on M bodies there is one lens that I find works a treat, my 70-200 f4 with or without a x1.4 multiplier. Perhaps because of the tripod collar giving you a good hand grip, it makes a great and well balanced combination. I think your key point about whether you need a fast lens for most circumstances is right on the money, why carry all that weight if you are going to be shooting at f8-f11 anyway ?
@BillEricPhotography

That F4 lens is a great option. It's smaller and lighter and you can still get a nice out of focus area in the back ground.

This is an awesome comparison. I'm thinking that my M50 with one of these on it will make a great companion to my 6D & 16-35 set up on a tripod for my main shot. Plus, I can shoot tele while I'm waiting for my lighting on my main camera.
@BillEricPhotography

@@BillEricPhotography right. I mean, I've gotten some shots with the M50 and an EF-S 10-18MM that are incredible. The only reason I went back to full frame was to incorporate astro back into my landscapes and the 6D & 16-35 f2.8 II is an awesome kit for that.
