Update: The dummy battery was delivered today. I tried turning on the camera before using the dummy battery and it cut on and off as it should. I feel confident the dummy battery resolve would have worked too. I am holding onto the battery just in case. For anyone who's wondering I used the camera for content vlogging yesterday. I was able to press the play button which allowed the camera to cut on after the battery was removed and reinserted. I turned on the auto off function to save on battery life. The camera was bought to vlog and as a lighter option to my fuji flim cameras. The canon was purchased refurbished from Canon at a great price so I didn't want to return it as anything similar was twice in cost. Great vid and Thank U! I now have a better streaming option using the dummy battery.

This was so helpful! Thank you! Mine did the same too but had a ticking noise. I purchased the charger you had suggested. Initially it didn’t work and was still clicking. I left it on charge however for a hour and the clicking eventually stopped. Once the clicking stopped, I turned my camera on and it was back to normal. I could use my regular battery again also. Was worried I’d have to buy a new camera but your video saved me!

Aw man... I was so excited for this video, because we have a Canon EOS M50 in great condition that just ... doesn't turn on. Unfortunately, the trick with buying a dummy battery doesn't work at all for me because I had already been USING a dummy battery for about months before the camera went dead! Very glad to see yours started working for some reason. Ours won't turn on with brand new batters, with the direct to wall battery, etc.

I'm having this problem and use both batteries and a dummy battery as shown in this video. I've never noticed switching between them did anything, but maybe? However, I have the problem with the dummy battery as much as the proper batteries. The issue for me seems to be the battery's contact inside the camera. With the dummy battery, I sometimes need to push the cable in, which pushes the battery harder against the contacts, and this gets it to turn on, until I let go, then it loses power. With enough wiggling, it eventually settles into a position that keeps it on, until the next time I switch between battery and dummy battery. The proper batteries also require progressively more wiggling, pushing, inserting/popping out, before they land in a position that provides suitable connection to stay on. I don't think it's anything about a hard reset for me here, just that they're not making a proper connection to the contacts. But it's getting worse, so I'm looking for videos like this that may point to a cause.

I have the same problem. Camera (M100) worked fine with batteries. Then I bought a dummy battery (not the same one as shown here) for filming. Everything worked perfectly out of the box. In the evening I pulled out the cable out of the dummy battery and left the dummy battery unplugged in the cam overnight. Next morning cam was dead. I searched the internet for tips and tried everything. cleaned the pins, tried a new card, fresh batteries, detached the lens, card and battery over night…nothing worked. I called Canon but they do not provide service for the EOS M100 anymore. I haven't tried to leave the cam with the dummy battery attached for a while, because I´m not trusting the dummy battery that caused the problem. I purchased the Dummy Battery shown here to give it a try. Hopefully it works.
@NeverDot

@@r0b0tni My dummy battery has a visibly different metal in use for the contact (greyish), so that may be silver. My guess is that the battery contact to the camera is causing some chemical reaction such as corrosion that's then preventing power from reaching the camera. My action of pushing the battery in back and forth is likely scraping away that corrosion (or whatever), restoring the connection and allowing it to work again. I may try finding something to better clean the internal contact, and I'll remember your experience here and not leave the dummy battery inserted for long periods of time to reduce impacts on the internal contacts.

I was having a similar problem with my Canon EOS M. It had been sitting (battery out) for about 4 years. I bought 2 new batteries and charged them and it still wouldn't power on even though the lens would move a bit when I closed the battery hatch. I tried connecting to my computer via USB and still nothing. After desperately pressing and holding every button, I started doing combos. After holding the "on" button and the green "playback" icon button simultaneously, it finally powered on. I had to press the off button in rapid succession to get it to power back off. After taking some photos and about an hour of elapsed time+powering on and off (several times), it now powers on if I hold the on button by itself for about 10 seconds (sometimes after a couple cycles of 10 seconds then pressing it a couple times normally) and it powers off normally for the most part, sometimes I have to press and or briefly hold the off button a couple of times. I'm hoping the gremlins will eventually work themselves out, but the camera seems to be functioning normally.

I had a vice-versa situation, using my M50 MK II with a dummy battery. Sometimes, my camera did not turn on with the dummy, so I figured I needed to plug in the fully charged original battery to my camera, and after it turned on, I could switch back using the dummy battery. In my case, for whatever reason (I'm using a different dummy adapter, the one with USB type-C), the dummy battery should be plugged into the dummy power adapter, not the laptop. If I plug it into the computer, the camera will not turn on, and I must plug in the original fully charged battery to make it work again. Hope that helps someone. I literally spent hours figuring this out.

But when I turn to OFF position right from ON position, the green light is on for like 2 seconds. And then, when I turn to ON position right after, the green light flashes for like a second. I've been troubleshooting and realized it might be mechanical. There were three times before when the camera fell to the ground, which likely caused some mechanical issues.
