My pleasure. I am a big proponent of working with as little gear as possible and still being able to get useable footage. I hope this video is informative in that sense.

The speed shooter is by far the best piece of kit I've encountered in years, won't shoot without it anymore. Just back from Kenya and managed to use it even on game drives, just for that extra bit of stability. So much easier to travel with a monopod and harness than wrangling a bloody huge tripod. Thanks Ron!

I wanted an harness like that when I had my big Tamron lens 150-600, but they were very scarce at the time I was looking for it and I abandoned my search. I knew they existed because I saw some photographers at the olympics coverage that had one. But now cameras and lenses are so light now, I'm not sure if I need one, and I honestly never met a photographer that had one, they all have Cotton harness to strap their gear on their chest so I eventually did the same. Those monopod harness seems to be sold by few manufacturers and not sold on online retailers, and it is hard to get feedbacks from customers to see if they are true to what they are capable of, but I do feel they are doing as advertised based on your video so congrats on that!

Excellent! Loving my harness! Also recently picked up a flex shooter and with a little practice I find I'm using it in place of my fluid head, gimbal and ball head.

I have a Manfrotto HD-501 fluid head, and yes it have a lever, but I can remove it. What I love about this fluid head is you can mod it, so I can put an horizontal grip on one of the screw holes on the side. But what I find inconvenient with my current camera gear is the vibrations. It interesting that you mention you keep your eyes on the viewfinder because for older cameras (mirror) you couldn't get away with that and that was a huge downside. But Olympus have a reflex sight that you put on your coldshoe and now the camera has a reticle like those military rifle, so I guess that's the best alternative, I still wonder if I want one despite having a mirrorless. To get back on the tripod topic, I have a Benro tripod and with a 500 mil, the slightiest touch on the camera cause massive vibrations (combined with Canon crop factor on their 4k sensor, it just get worse). I am not sure how I can mitigate that.

I have watched most of your videos and I really appreciate how you explain everything. I just got an R7 and 100-500 canon and set up according to what you said with fast action for birding. Since I am new to mirrorless, after a couple months, now I am wondering if you have any suggestions on my issue. There are quite a few time where I am right on the bird in the open and the camera will not auto focus. I move the camera down and put it back on the bird and still no luck. I focus on the branch it is on then move over to the bird and still no luck. I have it on off for eye detection but all the other settings are what you describe. I would appreciate any suggestions.

Thanks another helpful video ! I've been shooting video with my speed harness when using my 600 F4, and it works great for that. I have a fluid head as well but recently picked up a flex shooter. So far have been able to use that in place of the video head shooting from a blind and now prefer it for a whole bunch of reasons it's sort of a ball head gimbal fluid head all in one and .. sort of. But nice and compact.

A very useful and timely video. Are you able to use a variable ND filter with your RF lenses? With EF lenses, that Mieke VND adapter has been very useful. I was afraid of it at first, but mine has so far been very solid in my system for video and stills, so when switching back and forth you just have to remember to reset the ND for proper exposure to avoid high iso for stills. I hope you can do a video on the best filter options to use in the field, as switching up in the field is a pain.

For my 600 f/4 I purchased 3 additional Canon drop in filter holders and have them fitted with various strengths of ND filters so changing them in the field is real easy. With my 100-500 for example, I use a magnetic system made by Freewell. In this system you install a ring on the lens and the filters attach magnetically, so there is no screwing and unscrewing. I have found them to be very easy to change in the field and I like the filters because I see no color casts from them. I have tried VND filters and I have not found one I like more than the system I am using now. Cheers, Ron

thank you for a great video - I see some great R7 reviews BUT many seem to complain about IS wobble etc have you experienced this? (I have looked at move YT vids and it appears it is more to do with rolling shutter - not an issue really with mechanical shutter)
@RogerZoul
Жыл бұрын
Isn’t wobble an issue for wide angle lenses only? Most KZitemrs only report on wide angle use , so Ron is one of a very few video shooters who focus on video with telephoto lenses.

My primary lenses I use for my videos are the RF 600 f/4 and the 100-500. The RF 600 is an amazing lens for video because the IS/IBIS performance is just so good and smooth. It activates and cancels out even the smallest vibrations. The 100-500 on the other hand is a bit different. I would not call it wobble at all, but more the lack of fine vibration reduction. The R3 with the 100-500 IS/IBIS does great when actively panning and there is enough movement for the system to sense the need for image stabilization. But, if you are really steady and only imparting a very small amount of movement to the system, the IS/IBIS does not kick in. This can be problematic at times, but overall not a huge issue. Ron

Are you shooting in manual Mode or do u use ine of the automatic modes? What aperture and shutter speed do you use?
@whistlingwingsphotography
Жыл бұрын
I always shoot Manual mode for video because exposure is so very critical to get correct. Shutter speed is dictated by the frame rate you are shooting. The general rule is double the frame rate, so 60 fps = 1/125s shutter speed. If shooting 120 fps = 1/250s
