I found it easy to tell the difference in the opening comparison clips (and the ensuing clips). The C70 on the right was much better (even on YT on my iPhone). Not close at all. About time Canon fixed the noisy shadows. Why we have to put up with that in $4000 Canon cameras is beyond me.

Undone just did a review of the R5C. The best way to get the most DR out of these cameras is to shoot RAW. R5C ST RAW comes out with 10.8 stops DR, after NR, 13 (Undone). C70 raw LT comes out 12.3 stops, no NR (Cined lab test). Cined lab results are 0.2 stop less than undone's (CIned C70 XFAVC vs Undone C70 XFAVC), so C70 RAW with NR should be at least 13.5+ "undone" stops.

Answering here since you sent the link. I had seen this test. To my eyes, the C70 gets unusable at -2 due to major discolouration on the side of your face and in the beard/skin around the mouth (yellow/green). The R5C has more noise, but the image seems well resolved and the colors are still good. On the top end they perform close enough that it's not an issue. And again: these are side by side comparisons where you are pushing the image. I would NEVER bring 'higher DR' as a selling point for the C70 vs the R5C, when judging real life situations.. The body and NDs are proper features that I like about the C70. Then again, as a hybrid photo/video shooter, the C70 is not on my radar. If Canon made a C70 mkII with FF and the same Photo/Video switch that the R5C has, they'd get my attention. And just for the record: if someone can't make beautiful images with a C100, then these cameras won't help.

Great vid! R5C gave it away as sharper image (although it's about DR) here, R5C makes it such an incredible value prop! I personally felt that C70's image was more pleasing to the eye, perhaps it's the native 4K and DGO

Thank you! It’s all a matter of personal preference at this point. These cameras are all so good! The good thing about having a sharper image is that it’s easy to soften it in post or with a diffusion filter. Tougher to go the other way.

Thanks for the informative video. CVP did an interesting review of the R5 C where one of the features discussed is the dual base ISO feature. (kzitem.info/news/bejne/pYqqrqinnJR9aH4) For shooting in low light, if you select base ISO 3200 in the menu and then shoot at ISO 800 you get a much cleaner image. Have tested, works well. REPLY
@Josh_Sattin
2 жыл бұрын
Yes it has a dual base ISO and I will be testing those capabilities soon. The cleanest image and most dynamic range will occur at the lower base ISO of 800. If you need more sensitivity from the sensor then 3200 is the best.
@csound55
2 жыл бұрын
@@Josh_Sattin Agree 800 ISO will give the best result in a well lit scene. However when shooting darker scenes, choosing 3200 as base ISO and still shooting at ISO 800 - you don't lose DR, middle grey is just shifted higher so not as many stops available over but more clean stops are available under middle grey. I tried this today and am impressed how underexposed areas of an image can look very clean with the R5 C using this method. I was curious because your 4 stop underexposure tests looked very noisy compared to other tests I've seen online.
@Josh_Sattin
2 жыл бұрын
@@csound55 I think you missed the point of this test. It wast to test dynamic range, not low light or high ISO performance. The underexposure test is to see how much information is in the shadows and how clean the image is in the lower stops of the dynamic range.

@@Josh_Sattin Lol I think you missed my point that the R5 C optimal dynamic range performance is not limited to one base iso setting - dual base iso provides flexibility depending on lighting conditions. In this regard the R5 C is a bit different to the C70 which has optimal performance at iso 800 and better DR than the R5 C at this setting.

Main pros of the A7SIII are low light (probably but haven't tested the R5C yet), IBIS, battery life and better autofocus. I was surprised with your comment about protecting the highlights which usually suggests underexposing. However, it seemed both cameras had more latitude if you ETTR. I have the R5C and the shadow recovery is terrible. I’ve had to expose a bit brighter than I normally would, but I find it acceptable because with underexposed shots, the amount of noise and grain introduced just kills it.
@Josh_Sattin
2 жыл бұрын
I'm sorry I didn't explain that very well. You can expose up to the point right before you clip the highlights since there is a lot of latitude in the highlights. Use the waveform and false color to determine this. Sometimes this might be a bit "overexposed". And yes, I would not recommend underexposing.

I've found the opposite regarding noise - for shooting in low light in clog 3, go to the camera setup in menu (camera icon on the left) - tab 2 and select Base ISO - choose 3200 - then shoot with ISO 800 - you'll find the image is much cleaner. The dual base ISO in this camera is one of it's best features.
