I totally agree with your assessment. I shoot professionally with a 5D mkiii and 7D MKII and I just bought an SL2 with the two pancakes and the 10-18 for my lightweight kit. For me it has the added bonus of working with my entire kit making it a backup as well. I've tried mirrorless camera but I'm not sold on them and the value of the SL2 is far better

I like the saying, the world's best photographer is not as good as the world's worst camera. The reality is that any good photographer should be able to take good photos with any camera. Right now, someone challenged me to take good photos with an old sony handycam that I have. I have a couple of good photos, but I am trying to get more.

I am a professional commercial photog in Atlanta. I have entire pro systems from Nikon, Pentax and Canon. The camera I reach for THE MOST while working in the studio and in the field is my Canon SL1. I got it for $200 refurbed from Canon. I generally travel with the 24mm and 50mm STM lenses and occasionally use my 100mm 2.8 Macro. No photographer NEEDS more. Of course, one can never have too many cameras.

Your review is refreshing. I have seen so many camera reviewers that are stuck on getting bigger processors, sensors, focal points, tracking, and so on. Manufacturers make bigger of everything tons of times a year, but it comes down to can a person use the tools they have. Better lenses can make a difference, but use of the camera can be improved on. A person can buy a new camera every few months if stuck on the philosophy of going bigger.

Honestly I don't care whether any of you use a Mirrorless or DSLR, both offer great qualities and both have drawbacks, but the more and more I get into this photography hobby, the more and more I realize that so many people think "photography" is based on the quality of their gear, the type of camera and the brand they use. I come from a computer building background and I haven't seen so much fan snobbery in my life...like geezus I'm just here to learn more about the camera industry, but every review video I come across, everyone in the comment section is bickering at each other about what gear is better, what company is the best, or what type of camera is the "future" etc...calm down cameras are just tools to help us capture moments in life for goodnessake, good photography is not a direct product of the "best gear, brand, or type", but rather the moment captured by whatever camera you had when you took the picture. Don't forget that photography is actually an ART! and not related to the prowess of your technological understanding.

I usually in good enough shape to carry what I need (or want) When my knee was barely functioning, I gained a new appreciation for my Olympus oem5. I still got great images. I cant crop as much; but I worked around it and learned to work with aperture priority which I probably would not have othewise. Sometimes less is more.

I also shoot with Nikon gear for sports and wildlife but bought an SL-1 for my girlfriend because she wanted something small, light, and not mirrorless. She loves it. I've used it for travel with the 40mm pancake and it is a great camera. In the end, it is the vision of the photographer that creates a great image, assuming you have the appropriate tool for the task.

Thank you SnapChick...your reviews are refreshingly "real world" while talking about just enough of the important specs. As far as comparing sizes of cameras, I'd rather have seen apples to apples...D800 with the 24-70/2.8 compared to the SL2 attached to the equivalent crop sensor lens...and maybe also comparing APS-C mirrorless as well as a micro four thirds camera, as, IMHO, they can/do take very good images in an even smaller form factor. But point taken, a smaller/lighter camera like the SL2 is fun to use and so much easier to carry, while being able to create images almost indistinguishable to full frame in most situations (save for low light / high ISO, and scenes with max dynamic range or where max subject isolation is desired).

SnapChick love your reviews. Now at about the 15:38 mark you said you could not find a way to adjust the out put for the pop up flash on the Canon SL2, Goto menu #2 on first menu selection and go down to flash control then select Built in flash setting. there u will see Exp comp. adjust it there. Or in one of the manual modes use the touch screen quick menu and it will appear just under the ISO setting upper right side. Hope that helps.

I don't know anything about the Nikon cameras that you are used to working with, but it seems that the method I described is the way Canon does it. At least my Canon 10D, 50D, 7D, SL2, SX30IS, SX50HS and SX60HS which have on-board flashes work that way. The 5D doesn't have a built-in flash. I guess what you would like is for the flash to work like a speedlite. I could see how this would be handy as this is the way I use my speedlites in the studio. It seems that you will have to stay with Nikon if this is they way you want to work with your on-board flash. I try to stay away from using the on-board flash and don't see the Canon system as a hindrance when I have to use it.

Update, This is a popular battery for canon apsc cameras and they are ALWAYS available on prime. There's no need to worry about using off brand, they do not set error codes. (Read the reviews) I'm also adding this body only for its small size, wireless, great focusing, ability to use my other canon lenses. (This is my recommended starter camera because your lenses move up with you) and like snapchick I'm not ALWAYS wanting to risk my $2000+ camera's for walk around shooting.

SnapChick clearly understands the purpose of this camera, which makes this review one of the more useful ones I have seen. I do however doubt that the part about the flash output is ackurate. I hace the predecessor, the SL1/100D, and it has (just like Canon Cameras) the Flash compensation settings, accessible throug the quick setup screen. Also, while it has no dedicated button/joystick for selecting af points, you can use the directional pad, so that you don't have to cycle through all Af points.

NIce review. Interesting camera with a low price. I've been using Sony mirror-less for 7 years so the thought of buying a camera with a physical mirror that flips up for photos, and an optical view finder, are showstoppers for me. As a personal note we have no less than seven cameras in the house, all with video capability. But I just don't find myself using video very often. These are personal preferences. I would prefer less frames per second, but more consistence, as Canon would usually do. But probably pressured by companies that put higher numbers, they put 5 frames that fill the buffer in 1 second, and then we have to wait. Maybe it's more useful for sports, but for everything else it's a waste.

I picked up a D3300 for just these reasons (prefer it to the 3400) - light and small. They're about $300 and just a joy to use and the 3 AF-P lenses are very nice and small. I have a big Nikon pro rig and lenses, so it made sense to stick with Nikon, but if I didn't have so many lenses, I'd get this SL2 and one of those pancakes. Wish nikon had a good one with AF.

Hi I love this review, especially the part you tested its CAF burst shooting capabilities. What I have yet to find from every SL2 review is how the dual pixel AF during live view works for stills photography in CAF burst mode because apparently, the newly added DPAF is more exciting than the 9 or 11 points basic AF sensor that's been there since a decade ago. Is it not applicable to burst shoot in live view like a mirrorless camera can?

With SL2, when we use a Canon EF lens in manual focus mode - why doesn't the green light display when you achieve manual focus?

Very good review, I am almost sold but though I found a microphone in the accessories, "compatible with EOS with a jack", I found no mention if the SL2 has the jack. Can I find the answer here? Thanks!!

I love the size and form factor of the SL2 but I’m concerned and torn whether I’m going to get a good video images as a filmmaker. 3 yrs ago they made a feature film with an iPhone 6 (I think) and it looked ok but nothing to write home about. So now I happen to own A Samsung S9 which shoots 4K but I only have one lens on a phone. So because of that I’ve been looking at the SL2 as an entry level film camera........ Your thoughts Snap chick.

Would it be fair to say that you assess this camera to be competent? I am curious to know what you thought about the A6000?

Do you think portrait photos taken in 200d will pass or will look like a professional photo?

You can go smaller with a Canon M5 or M6 and a 22mm F2.

Thanks so much for a very comprehensive review. I did test drive the SL1 and although it does generate very good IQ, I found it to be just a little too small for my grip. I wonder if the SL2 may be just a bit larger than its predecessor? By the way, I really like your Carmen Miranda look. :)) Thanks again. Tony

Thanks! I'm not sure that you'd find the SL2 to be significantly different in size. There are slight tweaks to the form factor, but nothing major.

I would like to ask for your advice. I want to get a new camera so I can get into night photography. I'm having a hard time choosing between the Canon 200D, Sony A5100, Sony A6000, and Canon M50. Which would you recommend?

Will EFS 18-135mm f/3.5 - 5.6 IS STM be ok for this camera?

This camera should be better than my Canon SX60hs which right now is an expensive paper weight. I'm using my phone camera for now.
