The reason Sigma and Tamron didn't start with full frame is because that's what Canon allowed them to start with . It has nothing to do with gauging the market. They have been selling full frame lens to Canon users for decades, no need to gauge, it's Canon that's holding them back. They are already been some cool lens released in the last 3-5 years for other brands. It makes sense just to put the mount on those and introduce them to the RF family but they haven't for the only reason from a business standpoin that make sense, they can't! Especially when their prices are so so good. Canon has calculated the revenue lost over the years and with this new mount , they get a clean start to boot out any and all competition. It's the cripple hammer at work.

Well said Jeff. If history is any indication, it has been obvious that Canon never really took apsc seriously. To be fair, none of the big three did (other than fuji). When it comes to Apsc format, be it the bodies or the lenses, their profit margins are simply to low for Canon to glean, not to mention also the difficulty to engineer and manufacture apsc lenses which required to focus light onto smaller and denser sensor. So, for Canon RF apsc to exist, it serve more like a duty/obligation Canon has to continue instead of making money (at least that's how I look at it). By opening up the RF mount to Sigma and Tamron for the apsc offering it a pretty smart move for Canon but it was a late one. Can't believe it took them so long to realize the benefits. If you think about it, it is a triple win for Canon. 1) Canon make money on every sigma and tamron lens sale 2) Canon can sell more apsc bodies because now it has 3rd parties lens choices. 3) Can shut the mouth of people who has been complaining that RF mount is a closed system. BUT, opening up the RF for 3rd parties to make full frame lenses is a entirely different story. The full frame lenses are the 'most fatty part" of their profit of the imaging business. Call me skeptical, but I don't share the optimistic view of Simon, when it comes to 3rd parties FF lenses offering (having said that, this is one of the time I wish to be proven wrong). I think Simon knows that as well as we do. As a youtuber, he might not want to shoot himself in the foot by saying anything bad about Canon incase Canon wants any collaboration with him in the future. 😅

Canon's parsimonious allowance for third-party lenses is cheekiness defined. That fact is now both Sigma and Tamron are making outstanding lenses fully capable of going toe-to-toe with lenses from the majors. This is especially the case with full-frame lenses. I'm so tired of seeing announcements for new Canon cameras... They don't know what the real problems are in the Canon ecosystem. Where is the good and affordable 50mm F1.4, or 85mm F1.4,and the list can continue... After so many years, they bring a 35mm F1.4 L that finally is compact and don't weigh a tone, but yet very expensive, so! a no go! Canon cares only about pro's! for the rest of us, we must use ceap and very dark zooms and plastiky primes, not so great optically. For 24-105mm f4 zoom, they ask 1488euro in my country. This is insane! If Canon cares for the majority of consumers, the best thing to do is to allow third-party manufacturers to make lenses also for FF, not only for APS-C Canon cameras.

The R3 is my daily driver shooting real estate. My favorite features of it are the stability of the wifi connection while wirelessly tethering to an Ipad, the touch sensitive joystick focus controller, and the big battery, allowing me to get through 3-4 houses per day. All 3 of these features are better than the current R5 variant cameras, but all 3 of these features are also (to my knowledge with the exception of maybe the wifi) left unchanged between the R3 and R1. I have no plans to buy the R1 and of the few other R3 shooters I know, none of them do either. If my R3 fell off of a truck today, MAYBE I'd consider an R1, but to replace an already fantastic R3 with one is just silly. It's essentially the same camera and IMO confirms the speculation we all have had for years that the R3 was initially going to be the R1 before Sony beat them to the punch.

For those who recall the earliest generation of PC processors, the 8086 was enhanced by pairing with the 8087 floating-point math co-processor, which was added to the motherboard socket. This chip aimed to accelerate floating-point arithmetic operations like addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and square root, particularly for users of AutoCAD or other CAD applications. The performance improvements ranged from about 20% to over 500%, depending on the application. Subsequently, Intel's development of the 80486DX processor integrated the floating-point math co-processor, a trend continued by the Pentium. It is my understanding that Canon's Digic Accelerator is following a similar path, aiming to enhance the calculation speeds for image focusing and tracking. Eventually, the camera's internal processor may integrate this accelerator as a single chip.

Even though Canon claimed that R5 mark ii has better thermal structure built-in the camera body than the original R5 but after watching certain videos it seems like mark ii is overheating much sooner than R5 in 4K fine 30fps even though both cameras are set in high temperature mode. After the firmware 1.6 the overheating issue of R5 has almost gone. In my opinion, they have lower the thermal threshold in R5 mark ii compared to R5 when the temperature is set to high ( lets say up to 99 degree celsius in R5 and 90 degree celsius in R5 mark ii) so in this way they can sell the battery grip with active cooling fan but I am not sure about it.

If I didn't have to consider money, I would have an R1 -- and I have one on order (from 2 different on-line stores). HOWEVER, with Canon's recent price drop on the refurbished R3 to $3299 (that sale is now over), I had to reconsider the R3 and purchased one (I had previously sold my earlier R3 for more than that when I learned of the R1 coming out). I also have orders at 3 stores for the R5 Mark II. However, after reading the reviews of the R5 M2's poor dynamic range when compared to the R5 Mark I, as well as the fact that it still suffers slightly from rolling shutter, I decided that it was not for me as a wildlife photographer who is out before sunrise and has to rely on higher ISOs for those must-get shots. So I'll be canceling all of those orders. I did an in-depth comparison of the R5 Mark I, R5 Mark II, R6 Mark II, R3 and R1. On my scoring, the R1 came out SIGNIFICANTLY higher based on my needs, followed closely by the R3. The R5 Mark II and R6 Mark II were nearly tied with the R5 Mark I trailing the field. MY needs primarily consist of a camera with a high quality image, lack of a rolling shutter, high frame count and large buffer. So you can see why the R1 scored so high. But for $3000 more than I paid for my R3??? That's a tough nut to swallow -- especially if Canon is coming out with an R6 Mark III and/or an R3 Mark II. I do believe we will soon hear about both of those cameras from Canon with the R3 M2 having a 45 mpx sensor, priced around $5500. I think they're going to drop it from the line. The R1 has things like specific sport modes like Soccer Mode. So if that means they made the camera to know or figure through the movement it detects that the ball is going this direction, and this is the person with the ball now, so it changes focus with that, then the camera could be placed in the back of a goal and get follow the action remotely instead of focusing on what object is closer or more prominent.

I think they should make the R3 be a high-resolution version of the R1, for those who need the extra performance and desire the 1 body style, but are willing to compromise on speed for resolution. They used to have the 1DX line, but for many years, we had to choose between resolution or the flagship body style. Even though I shoot equine sports, I usually use strobes, so my FPS has to be limited anyway, and I've always opted for the extra resolution (and lower price) of the 5D line. And now that I'm at 45 megapixels, I'm loathe to drop down to 24, especially since I need to heavily crop a lot of my action shots in big arenas. If they make the R3 Mark II 45 megapixels or so, with a flash-sync of at least 1/320, if not 1/500+, I will probably snap it up.

I have to disagree with you here Simon. Sigma and Tamron already knew that if they released their lenses to Canon that they would sell like hotcakes as alternatives. People are buying the Nikon equivalents. Nikon just realized this sooner than Canon and they are reaping the rewards from it. Nikon has the Sony equivalent Tamron 35-150 and Tamron 28-75 for Nikon, it's just smart business. You want more people into your system. Canon wanted their R&D back from the expensive RF lenses as much as possible and didn't want any competition. If they had allowed Sigma and Tamron to offer full frame lenses from the start, it would have eaten into their profits for expensive RF glass because people would have asked why should I buy a lens at 1899 to 2500, when I can get a Sigma and Tamron equivalent for 799 to 1899 or on the used market for far less, which would further eat away at Canon's RF R&D. APSC is a different type of buyer, but not always as it can be used in conjunction with full-frame (full-frame isn't necessarily needed by all, wanted but not needed), and you are correct as a lot of APSC users normally buy on the basis of price, but no one talks about this, Canon already has a cheaper equivalent RF glass and it's their STM RF equivalent. Simon, I can tell you from personal experience, most pros have to justify what they are spending with work, and as a pro you are not trying to spend large amounts of capital if you don't have to, that's purely a KZitem thing as pros hold onto their equipment for long periods of time. Canon was purely trying to protect their market, and I don't blame them, but it has come at a cost. A lot of working pros hit the used marked heavily and because Canon doesn't have a huge RF secondary market it is hurting them. Thank you for going over your process for video and you are correct that the make-up with three lights helps with the T-Zone area.

I think it was a fair move from Canon to let users know that previously released R3 wasn't a flagship. They want to improve it a bit further and they did. In this way everyone had the information, buy the R3 or wait for the R1. Perhaps we will have this situation one more time in the future when Canon will work e.g the global shutter but in the meantime will want to give some small incremental update

The R3 wasn't the flagship, yet it isn't too far from it, and when looking at the 1DX III, even Canon later said that it functions much like a flagship...

Not sure why people don''t understand the upgrade with the R1 the digic accelerator and how it works without knowing what the white paper says. It's common sense. So much negativity and you guys keep parroting the same negative vibe. Wait until it's released just like the R5II. Every camera has limitations including the Z9 and A1. But you guys give them a pass. Good video and you actually give up a solid take on the R1 and R5III. Thanks. A lot of people commenting will write off a camera based on You Tube videos.

@@OrdinaryFilmmaker the raw limit stays at 20 but the jpeg can go to 120fps. It's also important to compare the buffer sustainance of these cameras. A camera with 50 fps but buffers in three seconds is inferior to the one that shoots 20fps but buffers in 10 seconds in the grand scheme of things.

In my opinion, I think they made a mistake years ago with the R3 and it’s snowballed now because of competitor pressure. I think the R1 should have been the same line as the R3, whether you want it to be the R1 line because of “tradition”. The R5ii should have been a new line or the R1 line as the flagship. There is a large price gap between the R6 and R5 line now. They could have left the R5 as the non stacked variant for a more affordable price. The entire lineup makes no sense and what I think would have made more sense would have been: R6 24MP non stacked R5 45MP non stacked R4 45MP stacked R3 Future Global Shutter Body R1 24MP Stacked

Canon does not compete with the Nikon Z9 or the Sony a1. I'm going to assume this is because they can't. Canon owns AF. Sony owns sensor tech. If you are REALLY good at making 24MP cameras -- which Canon appears to be -- then why NOT make a 24MP camera your "flagship?" The customer base might disagree . . . but other brands offer legitimate options to those who crave higher resolution.

After a few month with the R5 Mark II I have sold it at the weekend for the normal price. I need the best image quality that I can get and th Mark II can't deliver it. To many noise und much more noise with the electronic shutter and worse dynamic range compared to the R5. The Mark II is maybe for video, sports and wildlife, but the taget group of the 5 series cameras will be disappointed.

Canon is the clear leader in AF technology. In anything else? No. Canon is still far behind Sony (and therefore Nikon, too) in sensor technology. The four year old Sony a1 still does things that no Canon camera can do. Sure, the a1 is more expensive -- but if you need meaningful resolution at serious frame rates, the a1 is your answer. EVERY Canon camera, including the R1, is hampered by technology limitations and compromises. But for most of us, what Canon provides is plenty.

The pros want the best of the best and are prepared to pay the $1,000 premium or more to get that? I wonder what type of professionals you are talking about! I don't know many who believe that! Many will pay the price of the camera and lens that gets the job done and not a dollar more because they run businesses. They also rent lenses, cameras, lighting when they need it instead of buying and keeping everything. Sure if you are a wildlife or sports photographer, the gear that does the job is the most expensive gear, but that isn't true of wedding photographers nor product photographers for example. Phototrend should have asked why people should chose the R1 over the A9.

And . . . by all accounts, they already sacrificed DR and noise performance with the stacked R5ii sensor -- and didn't get a very fast sensor in the bargain! IMLTHO, the R5ii stacked sensor is a marketing play that doesn't reduce rolling shutter distortion enough to justify it on a technical level.

Did Canon get so concerned about 40 fps that they failed to realize that people would still just turn down the rate to lower than 30 fps because they don't want to go through that many pictures to choose from, so they should've gone with more MPs anyway. Feels like Canon played itself in it's game of withholding something from one model to try and force people to buy another model that they actually led people to consider the R3 (and maybe the R1) a waste of money. The R3 came out at the same price as the R1, but is now $4500.
