Heads up, in winter use the blue tarp for keeping rain off but in summer switch to the heaviest landscape ground cloth, it’s much less effected by the wind since it blows right thru, blue tarps catch all the wind & constantly being torn down. Shalom!

Thanks for sharing. Your build is simple, but seems to meet your needs quite well and has provided me with inspiration for my build. I have an 8’ bed with the ARE MX Cap (traditional tailgate set up) and am looking at a simple build that I can remove easily and store in my garage/attic. 😎🤙

16M here. I love skiing and hiking/camping and most of the places I like going around 1-3 hours away. My dad got a new truck about a year ago and I recently got my license. I'm trying to convince him to get a cap for the bed and let me make a temporary camper in it (something can be removable). Ur build is super sick and def gave me tons of inspiration to do something similar. It's about 4 years after you uploaded this so I hope you'rere doing good man.

I love the simplicity of this. One does need a screen room or canopy like they use at craft shows so you can enjoy the outdoors for cooking or sitting or working in computer. It's nice to have protection from sun or light rain. I like the portable plastic bins bc you can bring them out on a picnic table.

I like that type of cap but I could not function without a tailgate. I can see a counter top of sanded plywood on top of your storage bin holder setup. Having the option for daily use inside the camper, especially when it is raining. Camping in it as long as you did proves it works, very nice, thanks

thanks, the whole back swings up for full access when I am using it as a hauler. thought I would miss the tailgate, but never do. Rain is my one enemy, but as with all camping, we just deal with it. The tent poles and tarp function just fine, and is in fact better than an awning as I can have it anywhere near the vehicle. I have played with an idea of a countertop, but I am rarely in the sleeping area during daylight hours, so have never missed it. I have "cooked" inside on time in 12+ months of camping, and that was due to wind, not rain...LOL

Ordered my A.R.E shell back in the beginning of Feb. right after receiving my new 2021 Silverado 2500 8ft bed, and I just received it earlier this week (over 20 week wait) was told several times that it was being built and and that it would be shipped. Original time frame I was told was 10-12 weeks. After that just plan on getting the runaround. I even offered to drive up to Ohio and pick it up when they told me it was a shipping issue, only to find out that it hadn't been built and that it was just another line of BS they were coming up with. On a good note only 2 of the 4 windows leak....I like the function of the vented windoors but they leak pretty bad. Not looking forward to taking it the dealer, I'm sure they will make up some crap. Paid $3350.00. I recommend going with Leer (I have one on my Ram) it's been on for 12 years and have had NO issues. If I hadn't spent so mush I would take it off and use it for target practice then burn it to the ground. (With the so called fiberglass shortage) you can tell that the shell is much more flimsy than the older style. Have a nice day

You could put a wooden top on your shelving unit or half of your shelving unit to make a stable cooking and washing up place with the aid of a portable cook top and a washing up bowl,and change your storage in your shelving unit to the single drawers you can buy nowadays ...then you have a kitchen unit ...

Nice setup! Bed/Drawers is what I would like to do, hoping to find a video you have done on their construction. Only change is a draw at the end of the bed for cooking items that can be easily accessed while standing outside at the tailgate.

@Hmmm-ILikePancakes

Roof rack with a 270-degree awning would be nice, along with a headboard shelf instead of the wasted space at the foot of the bed. Personally, I love the idea of the rug but would carpet the whole bed with the BedRug carpet bed liner, $400 and it's waterproof and padded everywhere. Would make it a more comfortable space longterm. Also, I'd add a rooftop solar and inverter to allow for an ARE (or comparable) fridge/freezer combo. Looks like a great start to a nice overland rig, keep building!

Thanks. over 12 months of camping across the US in 5 summers, and I've found that 4 tent poles and a tarp beats the restrictions of an awning, but I certainly thought about it Space at the foot of my bed is for my folding chair and for footwear. I'm 6ft4in, so need every inch and I didn't want to give up anything at the head area. The bed had rhino lining, and since it is all inside, I have (so far) never had a problem with moisture or water inside. Thanks for the ideas on solar.
