Joe Henderson approaches his solo in an amazing number of ways, deconstructs the harmony, the modal approach. He was a giant.

Whenever I listen to this song, I have to close my eyes, bob my head, and go on the journey to Canteloupe Island with Herbie and the crew. It ain't always the same ride, but its always a good one. Kudos to Hubbard and Henderson for the solo work! esp. Hubbard... good Lord, man! You blowin that thing!

Wait! Hold the phone! Damn I've been listening to this version now about umpteen times and now marveling at how that mutha**f**g Hancock switches from basic melodic structure of noting to chording and tempo shifting and all in perfect counterbalance to Hubbard's masterful swinging trumpet, pounding out a beautiful rendition that hits so many strides, I cannot keep up or find my stumbling listening skills twirling and almost giving up. HANCOCK just continues to demonstrate he is not human, a fallen angel sent to give us a glimpse of the Empyrean Realm, allowing us to swim in those sacred waters!!! Damn!!!! God Bless Him!!! God Bless Ron Hubbard, Tony Williams, Ron Carter, et al for moving into our world for a brief time to bring utter joy!

@alaska, that sax player is one of the most creative innovators of jazz music man. Joe Henderson is top of the top of the top. I think you need to clean out your ears man. He sure doesnt play like Freddie (thank god) but he has created his own unique sound, more than you can say about 99% of the jazz players out playing today. Joe is a God

It definitly has but that does not mean that you can count it among cool jazz. Cool jazz developed at the end of the 1940s and from there has nothing to do with fusion. Cantaloupe Island is (like the most popular Hancock tunes) a fusion song which picks up a lot of elements from jazz history like blues, modal jazz and of course cool.

I'm gonna have to kindly but strongly disagree. They were having a conversation and Freddie had something to say. He introduced it, built it up to a climax, and brought it full circle back to where he began. Great solo. If you don't think that was a conversation watch what Herbie "says" at 1:36 and how Freddie answers. that's jazz, sir.
