Gary rides so nicely! Very soft hands and quiet seat, really nice to watch.

The problem with these horses not cantering is that they are not allowed to for too long. If a horse is raised in a pasture with some room they will canter on their own from youngsters. all my Foxtrotters were pasture raised and cantered from young uns and none had any problem cantering, or galloping and they all had canters to die for. let them run it won't hurt their gaits,a and all mine were very well gaited too.

Very quiet rider, very nice horse and video. :) To the idiot that commented on spurs (it wouldn't let me reply for some reason) Spurs are not designed for "controlling with pain" hell they arn't even for speed. They are to encourage your horse to lift their back and round up. They work better than crops and any tool can be abusive in the wrong hands. The spurs on this horse are helping him reach forward with his shoulder to get into a canter. Please educate yourself.

I met Gary Lane once at Horse Expo. Based on a simple question about his bit set up (I asked how it would help my horse, expalining that I had had an involuntary dismount and was getting back to riding my RMGH) he lectured me for a good 3 minutes in front of others - telling me that I am a fearful rider (he had never even seen me around any horse, let alone my own) and that I would come off again and be severely injured or killed. What a jerk.

I love watching the work of a true horseman/horsewoman like this. It's so inspirational to see just how in-tuned we can get with our 4legged friends once we've amassed enough experience!

Woo hoo. It's true a gaited horse sometimes "falls" into a canter easier with his nose dirt tipped to the outside to allow the landing on that inside leg. My guy prefers a canter cue on the inside shoulder instead of the outside hind. Weird, however it work for us lol! Hello from Ottawa, Canada:)

Very informative! I actually just learned how to canter, but I ride an ornery horse, so I'll try to use these techniques to get her going.

One thing you have to really watch with a gaited horse is that they don't cross canter. My mountain mare knew how to canter, but I let my boyfriend ride her and he didn't give her clear cues to collect and canter and she cross cantered and tripped and did something to her shoulder. Vet said she would be fine with rest and she was, but 10 years later she has arthritis in it. Now she's just a pasture ornament. They can canter fine, just be careful that you always have them in a true canter.

That guy needs to be riding a much bigger horse. Not impressed with any of this video. Where was this so called canter? Two thumbs down. 👎 👎
