Hey everyone! Training story here! I’ve been working a lot with Willow this summer on flatworm and basics, we just started doing the barrel pattern, weaving cones, and doing some cone exercise patterns. She has been doing pretty good!
When I got her 9 months ago, she was only used as a light trail horse for a long time, and we have no clue what she has done before that. When I did the barrel pattern, she seemed to know a little of what she was doing, and turns really well. So maybe she got started with barrels.? Who knows.
Last year I tried to canter after a month of having her, and she was soooooo lazy and confused she would just buck and then stop when I’d ask for a canter. I’ve been getting advice from my western trainers and their western knowledge has helped us both understand eachother more. We have more of a bond through the groundwork and bonding sessions I would do every day.
Yesterday, I wanted to see what I could make her do to my fullest effort. I got on with only a bareback pad and bitless bridle, barefoot and shorts lol, and we trotted and walked patterns for an hour… then I got a wild hair, I wanted to see if she would canter, now that I opened up a new window to her energy. I asked for a canter, she bucked once, I kept kicking and asking for it, she gave me 2 canter strides and I was so happy I praised her. So I went back and forth down the pasture pushing her and pushing her to canter… she finally cantered without one single buck! I was beyond excited! We cantered the length of the pasture a few times and got all sweaty. I was super proud of her and myself for having the confidence to keep going. After that hard work, we would just walk around for a bit, and she got pushed to her limit. An hour and half was all she would do and that’s totally ok. She would refuse to move and reared a couple of times. But I chilled her out and talked to her and we continued to walk for another few minutes, I wasn’t going to end our ride with a rear, only teaches bad habits for next time… so we walked to my tack room and completed our training day with a smile!
Videos were taken by our very close friend, Teri, who moved in with us. She saw me riding and came out to get some videos, but she didn’t get it all, but that’s okay, at least she got us cantering a little bit!
Thanks for reading and catching up! Sorry I haven’t been posting much, just been so busy to keep up with everything but I’m tryna to keep you guys entertained with my channel hehe… Hope you enjoyed! Have a safe and happy day/night and I love you all! ❤️🐴 June 27 2023
