Cantilever roofs are one of my all-time favorite architectural features. Overhanging roofs are dynamic, modern and practical and contemporary. I use cantilevers widely in my own projects to provide shade, shelter and a striking visual design element. This video has three short case studies from my own work, showing how and why I build cantilevers. Cantilever roofs can be pure or propped cantilever designs and I have used both in my work.
The video explores detail structural designs for cantilever roofs, including detailed drawings for all the cantilevers shown in this video. Overhanging roof design is complex and can be expensive, so they need to be designed with care. The video ends with five tips to help you design cantilevers.
