WE ARE CURRENTLY WORKING ON THE ENGLISH SUBTITLES FOR ALL OUR CANTONESE INTERVIEWS. Please be patient.
This Interview was conducted around late 2014.
Mike Moy’s Uncle Tat was an enforcer for the 14K Triad during the 50’s and 60’s who served in 5 different prisons in Hong Kong including the prison where he met Hong Kong actor Chan Wai Man (Michael Chan) who worked as a correction officer before becoming a 14K Triad leader.
Correction :
Mike’s uncle said during this interview, the weapon people used against him was a Kukri. The kukri is the national weapon of Nepal, traditionally serving the role of a basic utility knife for the Nepali-speaking Gurkhas, and consequently is a characteristic weapon of the Nepali Army. His son translated it as a watermelon knife but that’s not what his father said.
Watermelon knife (and meat cleaver) was also a common weapon used by triads as there had always been so many fruit hawkers using it to cut watermelon and peel pears. And therefore possession of watermelon knife is arguably legitimate. Watermelon knife used by gangs and triads could be chased back to Du Yueh-sheng, the legendary boss of Green Gang, as before being a gang member he was a fruit hawker infamous for using watermelon knife to fight off extortionists. Green Gang was originated in Shanghai. Du came to Hong Kong in the late 1940’s and died in 1951.
