@Jordan Streib What 2nd line center? Beauvillier is a winger who, at best, is a 3rd liner making over 4M who turns 26 in the offseason, so he's pretty much done developing. I don't. This is a deal that can only make the team worse, both now and for the future. Bo was a guy the Canucks could have rebuilt their team around, and they weren't that far off, just fill a couple of holes on the blueline and they'd be in decent shape with the weapons they HAD. If they were going to deal him off, at least get a shot at an extra top draft pick THIS year! Someone who at least as the POTENTIAL to become at least half as good as Horvat is. Not some spare parts that MIGHT, if they're lucky, become a basic top 6 player. Not for one of the league's elite offensive talents! This is just more proof that the Canuck's problems don't lie in the players or the coaching staff, but the upper management and, dare I say, OWNERSHIP! Time for Aquelini to sell the team to some new local guys who can perhaps turn things around and rebuilt the team's shattered reputation. EDIT: That said, I am happy for Bo that he's leaving this shit show behind.

He's NOT the problem, it's those other contracts for elite pay for depth players that's the problem. JT's playing up to the value of his contract as one of the team's top scorers, on a team with a lot of top scorers. If you want to look at the cap space problems, try looking at contracts like $4.5 mil a year for Connor Garland, who's basically a 3rd line forward, or the over $7.5 mil to OEL, who's paid like the team's best d-man when that best d-man this season's been Quinn Houghes, hands down. Then there's Myers, who I don't even remember how overpaid he is, but he's nowhere near the top stay at home d-man pay grade he's getting! Those 3 players take a cap hi t completely disproportionate to their level of play this season.

I was hoping that he would be going to a playoff team, one who is-or is looking to be-a contender this year, if Bo was only gonna be a rental, even if it wasn’t to a team I like. But that return…. It’s not good. I expected more, certainly at least another pick and for the 1st rounder to not be lottery protected, if the player in a “player, pick, and prospect” deal was gonna be a guy like Beauvillier. I hope Bo can find a home with an organization that isn’t a mess and actually has a plan and treats their players and personnel with respect. But more importantly, I hope he wins a Cup, and maybe the Islanders can get back to where they were with Trotz and be a real Cup contender again. Maybe. I wish Bo all the best. I think it's about right too--some overvaluing of Horvat has occurred, based on being a fan of the player and team. It's a pretty clear win-now move for NYI, which I find ill-advised. They're a bubble team still, and as much as all the bubble teams have been foundering, I'm not sure the Isles got SO much better that this even reasonably assures a wild card berth. On a good team Horvat's a second-line center, whereas I think Canucks fans see him as a first-line center on this bad team ... so yeah, that adds up, haha. Likewise I think it's a clear future-oriented move for Vancouver with strong value (albeit much wrapped in potential, of course). Beauvillier they added probably to offset cap space, but he's also having an unusually down year--I could easily see a resurgence from him next season in an expanded role on the Canucks and a flip for further return value. Raty's pretty widely regarded as a good forward prospect who should grow into the top six. Lamoriello's obviously not with NYI to set up the future, given the age of the roster the last several years, hahaha, so I'm totally unsurprised he dealt Raty. And that pick will be mid-first in a deep draft.

Given the protected pick I think it’s a fine trade and will be great if he signs with us, but even w Horvat I’m not sure this team has enough offensive firepower to be as competitive as they were a few seasons ago. I’ve been saying for weeks I’d rather see us sell than buy, but I’ve been proven wrong plenty of times. Lou and Bo said they are working on an extension. It's only a win if he is re-signed. Beau - Can score or be defensive, but not both. On a team that is more focused on scoring he could be a 50 point guy. Raty - I think he'll develop into a Pageau type center. Low scoring, but a great defender. The Islanders already have 2 of those in Cizikas and Pageau. Losing their 4th first round pick in 4 years will hurt the Isles big time in the future. The next GM will need to start selling aging assets in 2 or 3 years to get prospects rather than picks or this team will crash hard. With Pelech and Palmieri back in the lineup, and Wahlstrom and Holmstrom getting healthy, this moves the Isles into top 3 in the division, but I highly doubt this one trade makes them a serious threat to win the cup. With Vancover retaining 25% of Bo's salary, I suspect Lou has another trade in the works. I don't know what woke him up, but something did. Just last week one of the owners, Ledecky, said Lou has a plan but now he needs to execute it. A little fire, perhaps.

If NYI doesn't extend him, then to the contrary of a lot of shortsighted here-and-now thinkers, Vancouver got the better end of the deal by a lot. Two high-ceiling assets and an established middle-six winger with flexibility for a guy everyone knew they weren't re-signing. On a team that still isn't over the hump to qualify from this move! Think of it this way: Vancouver had to get something for Horvat and had reduced leverage because GMs knew he wouldn't re-sign. So this is purely a rental trade. A mid-first, a wing who moves up and down the lineup scoring 20 goals, and a widely regarded forward prospect for a rental? That's excellent value.

Bo Horvat was not going to resign with the Canucks, so they had to make a deal. The Islanders gave up a current player, Beauvillier, a prospect, Raty, and a number one draft pick. That's more than the Wild got for Kevin Fiala. At one time, Raty was considered a top 5 draft prospect, but as you stated, his draft status fell as the draft approached. If Horvat really wanted to play for the Canucks, he could just sign with them in the offseason, but I suspect he will not. The Islanders will have to give him a sweet deal to stay there, as I suspect he wants to play for a winning team with a chance at the Cup.

Winning a trade isn't all about who gets the best player, Thornton from Boston to San Jose comes to mind. I remember my dad up in arms over that trade, but only one of those teams won a cup and it wasn't San Jose. I think NYI got a player they needed, and Vancouver likely got the best package they could get. Vancouver wasn't getting a lottery pick for Bo, not this year anyway. Yet, Vancouver could have 2 picks in the top 15 this year and that is big. I think what put this deal over was that pick. If we traded Bo to Boston were looking at a 30-32nd overall pick, now we're looking at likely a top 10 pick and a 13-20 pick, much better odds of adding elite prospect depth. Fact is, with Raty and two potential top 15 picks, our prospect depth and value will jump considerably. If you think Van needs to rebuild then this is a good trade, likely the best you can hope for. No we didn't trade for a dman, which I'm okay with not getting another teams most expendable d prospect, instead we have an opportunity to draft our own D prospect. Can anyone tell me which dmen are expected to go between 10-20 overall?

As a Canucks fan I am pleased with this trade. Horvat is a beast and I would have taken him over a Miller extension in a heartbeat and still think that, but both returning forwards have the potential to be better players than Horvat and a potential first this year in the mid to high teens with a deep draft is about as good as it was going to get. The expectation that the return would be a roster player, a prospect and a first has always been the case and I would argue there are zero top 10 pick teams that would be willing to give that and a young roster player/prospect for an aging Horvat. Horvat will finish this year with over 40 goals but I am doubtful his current goal scoring will remain at pace next year and beyond, especially after the first 2 years if he does extend. Much like how Miller is never going to get 99+ pts again yet we paid him for that. I would say that the islanders get immensely better down the middle now, and it might push them into a playoff spot, but in 2+ years from now this deal will potentially be lopsided for the Canucks. In the end it depends what the islanders do offer him for an extension, if it's 8-9mill for 8 years then that's not a contract Canucks need or want.

For two months of a guy they weren't going to re-sign anyway. If you're focused on the here and now like THG and want to say the Isles emerged with the best player in the trade as your reasoning, there is nobody debating that. But in terms of overall long-term value, likewise there can be no debating Vancouver got good value: 15-20-goal scorer who's 25, forward many scouts believe will develop into a top-six wing, and a mid-1st pick in a deep draft. Rutherford's regime made way too many moves in Pittsburgh, more bad ones than most people remember. Watching the Isles game the other night, one things was clear. Barzal is terrible at faceoffs and a part of the Islanders issue is faceoffs and controlling the play. Horvat can win faceoffs. The Isles other problem is they cannot score. Their defense and goaltending are excellent, but their scoring is awful. Horvat has 31 goals. The first round pick is whatever right now for Vancouver. The difference is that we actually liked the coach and captain.

If you consider Horvats conditional leadership qualities then the trade makes sense. I've never considered Horvat to be a leadership presence on the ice. He abandoned the role of holding players like Miller accountable for their behaviour and left it to Schenn. He dropped all pretense of being a two way player in order to fatten his stats for this coming contract. My sense is that he wanted out as of three years ago after ownership dropped the ball on Toffoli and lowballed the coaches. That speaks to why he wanted out and I don't blame him. Problem is, how many other players no longer believe in the organization under this ownership.

I think the return is fair. That draft pick was probably going to be the highest they would have gotten back and Ratu is a decent prospect. They now have Barzal, Horvat, Nelson, Pageau and Cizikas down the middle, all signed long term (minus Horvat). I love Bo and it breaks my heart to see him go but let’s be honest, the Canucks have finally traded for futures which is something we’ve wanted for years. If Räty develops into a second line centre and if the Canucks get a first round pick in a stacked draft (preferably in the 13-16 range) this is a win. As for Bo, it’s unfortunate how things played out. Lots of guys get distracted when they’re playing under a microscope but Bo put up career numbers. That being said, his shooting percentage isn’t sustainable and he has, as you mentioned, dropped off over the past couple weeks. If the nail wasn’t in the coffin when the Canucks signed Miller, it certainly was when they signed Kuzmenko so rather than let this play out until the deadline they decided to strike while the iron was hot. The Isles have a great player and a solid leader in Bo and I’m thrilled that we have Räty AND a pick coming back (plus Beauvillier). This is a win win and fans of both teams should be excited!

That said, Isles fans have been waiting for this kind of “sell futures for a goal scorer” trade for an eternity. Can’t complain, especially since Bo has shown that he can score AND play a 200 foot game. I know his defensive game hasn’t been as good this year, but being an Islander will improve that, I think. I was disappointed when the Isles took him in the 2nd round, he's going to be one of those players that we look back on and wonder why he wasn't a top 10 pick. A real head scratcher by the Islanders... They have a lot of older players locked up in contracts north of $5M AAV for multiple years and only about $5M in cap space. Barzal's new contract kicks in next season which drops that even lower, so they'll have to make some major roster moves to resign Horvat. With their prospect pool dwindling even more, plus losing that 1st round pick, I'm not really sure what the strategy is here unless they plan to do some major shopping at the deadline.
