Giovanni Gabrieli is perhaps the most well known composer of renaissance music for brass instruments. A composer and organist, Gabrieli lived in Venice where he composed music at the stunning St. Mark’s Basilica. The unique architecture and resonance of St. Mark’s Basilica, inspired Gabrieli to compose music that fully utilized the acoustical properties of the space. Many of Gabrieli’s pieces are written for antiphonal choirs, intended to be performed from the elevated choir lofts on both sides of the sanctuary in St. Marks.
Giovanni Gabrieli’s Canzona No. 1 “La Spiritata” , was published as a part of a collection of canzonas which contained works by Gabrieli, Girolamo Frescobaldi and others. The musical form of a canzona was initially derived from the Franco-Flemish polyphonic song form, known as chanson. Canzonas would later influence the evolution of the fugue in the baroque era. Canzona No. 1 is a part of the many canzonas Gabrieli composed throughout his lifetime. Frequently these pieces were intended to be performed by various combinations of trombones and trumpets.
