I think while it is a good system, it takes too long, if at all, to get that deep. You can pass the whole game without going that deep into the mechanics. Just spam the strongest Navi chip and call it a day. Its until some post-games that you need to get good. But maybe this is why it has a very strong online presence. People want to battle it out with their strongest moves and abilities. Kind of like competitive pokemon. If Nintendo/Capcom wont give me strong enough bosses, maybe online will.

Another layer to add on top of what is in the video touched are the Program Advances. Selecting a group of chips on a specific order will combine them into a single much more powerful attack that the sum of their parts. Adds a risk VS reward with making sure you dont miss the attack. On top of this Navicusts becomes its own little mini game where you try to slide in as many abilities as you can to upgrade Megaman with its own set of rules. Break any and you end up with a certain type of bug depending on which rules you broke. All of these tools were easy to learn but hard to master, giving you plenty of freedom in creating a build you enjoyed to suit your playstyle. The mechanics on the sequels introduced only made things even more fun to experiment with. Capcom really went all out with this series, and I am happy its getting more love once again. You know, this description of how the Virus monsters fight, makes me think that it could make a really fun spin off game on its own right. I mean, it'd basically be like a real time chess, but every piece got HP and an attack pattern added on to their moveset. If you were to incorporate BN's turn based folder system on top of that, then you basically also can choose between swapping the type of pieces you got in your party, or use a diverse range of area affecting spells.

The boss navis were always really fun but the predetermined virus fights were extremely strategic too. The one's that combined elementals like ice and electeicity were the absolute most punishing. Some invincible penguin on ice shoots your stage, making the path ice, then some electric butneasy to dodge AOE enemy goes to your side of the stage... but because the ice you can no longer dodge well enough and get hit double bc electricity on ice has the effect. Or having certain panels being broken or empty before a fight. One battle I remember is a fan pulling me forward, a mole attacking me from behind at random and a swordie up front, all front and middle panels were poison.

Brilliant video, I'm actually more into Mega Man Star Force, the successor series to these games, i think the mechanics there changed to lean into something that while not quite as tactical as its predecessor, still has mountains of depth all its own, and leans itself more in the way of accessibility and emphasizes the action game element more with mechanics that give it a notably faster pace. Its not really brought up as often as Battle Network is and I understand why, it didn't create its own format like MMBN did, but I think it put a great spin on it that deserves more than I see it get. I'd occasionally heard Star Force was watered-down but after running through the games in this collection a bit, while they are still dear to me and I love each one having played them immensely as a kid, I think there's just a major difference between streamlining something and watering it down, with Star Force being the former, I think there's room for both at the end of the day.

@@BinaryDood playing through this collection and having a great time mind you, but even those two do it just not to their fullest potential, I prefer Star Force 1 as a game to everything except 3 and 6. The story imo is the best it ever gets in this entire timeline, my favorite in any Mega Man game tbh, the overworld map is great in that both worlds can be viewed at the same time, any time so its easier to memorize where to go on visual alone, the desire for a map is never present and because Geo and Mega Man are the same character you can use one to get the other in areas normally inaccessible to them. The stage designs rely less on puzzle solving and are more straighforward obstacle courses with a mini game or two thrown in there sometimes, and because there is no letter code and the grid is not divided, the slow grind of the first couple hours of nearly every game in the MMBN series, doesn't return in Star Force, swords are useful from the outset, The Mega Buster is more involved in the gameplay being as it autocharges and by default fires at a rate near some of .EXE's fastest shots, by 2 onwards the charge shot doesn't disappear after card use, unless you're using MegaAttack, so you actually can weave your charge shot into combos, and not just if you start the combo with one. the fundamentals of Star Force being a faster game were already there from the start, the third game just brings the greatest amount of polish and depth to it and has a literal mechanic rewarding you for fast kills and consistent aggressive gameplay, That game is my favorite in this entire timeline. I don't have as many nice things to say about 2, but regardless a lot of these things apply to it as well.

I've never played a Megaman game aside from one of the originals at a friend's house on a Super Nintendo, but this gameplay gives me DBZ: Legendary Super Warriors vibes. It also has you building a deck and playing mind games with the opponent to try and navigate the battlefield and land energy blasts and such that fire in a handful of different ways so you have to be crafty, as well as having button commands on a short timer for melee combo attacks. Charming sprite art too, definitely check it out if you haven't played it before. All that being said, this game looks great. I'll definitely pick it up when I can afford to. This is an excellent video, if I ever wanted to show someone concisely why I like MMBN, I'd show them this. It's also pretty much what you get from the tutorial and the first hour of gameplay at the same time. It's a great tutorial! At least 5&6's was, I haven't gotten the collection yet but it's pretty much the same there I think, probably. The fundamental game mechanics. But you didn't even get onto "Countering & Bonus Chips"! Always worded like that, even in StarForce... Only as I write now as a little jape that you didn't do the whole tutorial skit am I realising what a brilliant inclusion Countering & Bonus Chips is. An incredible way also to encourage players to recognise enemy behaviours and take big risks based on their knowledges of enemy behaviour and their own chips to gain big rewards. You fail the skill check, then you can have any fail state from hitting the enemy and not procing a bonus effect, to not hitting the enemy, to taking damage and hitting them, to taking damage and not hitting them. But if you succeed? The enemy gets stunned for a second as you can dish out damage freely, and you get an extra chip that doesn't deplete from your deck! Levels of risks, big rewards! And it also forces you to go back into your turns and plan out strategies going forward instead of one continuous combo of mastered strikes, by bonus cards not rewarding you with extra chips, just the stun. Still a reward, though! Wait, even another thought. Vulcan. A chip that essentially counter fishes for you. Know what else? It takes a long time. So, that counter you just fished, if you started up the Vulcan to fish it, you don't get that much out of it, but if you use foresight to get the end of Vulcan, you can then follow up with one if the bigger, unlikelier hits. Bloody brilliance.

I love BN, but BN1 Is kinda outdated compared to the other games.... It has confusing plot as if your missing story elements, high encounter rates, escape is a chip instead of a button, the internet areas are a messy maze so it just makes the whole experience even less.... But it did give us the introduction of this unique combat system, just look how unique those enemy's are, how unique the other navis are, all the designs are pretty spot on... So while BN1 is definitely the worst of the series, it's also kinda the best one because it's the game that established all this to begin with. Also they did kinda fix the story with having a whole 52 episode anime called Mega Man Net Warrior which basically covers the missing plots of the game itself.

outside of BN1, you could basically guarantee chip drops every combat with a bit of skill. The only reason you'd need less 'random' drops is if you're grinding for a specific code of a rare enemy for PAs or post-game content. Enemies' encounter rates can get a bit high, yes, but at the same time they've got methods to avoid that even in 1, and it's greatly increased in 3 onwards.

In fairness, I don’t think that swordy’s and mine-planters ever show up in the same fight together, but I know where you’re coming from.

An example that definitely does appear in the games would be Boomers and Fishies. Boomers use an attack that hits the top and bottom rows, as well as the back column. if you stay in the two first spaces of the middle row, you're perfectly safe. Fishies slowly drift up and down, and when in the same row as Megaman, perform a dash attack. So one enemy incentivizes you to stay in one particular row, while the other incentivizes you to keep moving up and down.

@@gregoryhayes7569 well another good example, specifically from the first game (I haven’t run into any boomers yet, so they might not be in that one) is the fishies and the mine planters. 2 fishies to keep you constantly moving, and the miner to punish it. It’s slightly balanced out by being able to kill the fishies with the miners, but those mines do 100 damage which is *punishing.*

I wouldn't call it turn based personally.

But all the footage you've shown is from BN1, which is by far the simplest and most unbalanced of all titles. You're in for a treat once you start playing bn3, 5 and 6 BN3 goes ham on the complexity aspect, and bn5 and 6 condenses the gameplay to be more pvp viable, with 6 being the better one at it, making most chips skill based and straight to the point, but leaving space for complex setups, in case you want to. 5 is good too in theory, but it's too dependent on its form change system.

MMBN is great but even with that description that’s not what turn based is.

And then StarForce happened which disappointed everyone. I get they wanted to make use of the ds new features but it was implemented poorly
