Capoeria is most popularly known as the art of hiding a martial art in a dance. Developed in Brazil by enslaved Africans, it was used to train freedom fighters for resistance to their oppression. Older forms of this art included weapons such as the machete or knife for close quarters fighting. In the years following the abolition of slavery in Brazil, Capoeira remained banned until the early 20th century. It survived thanks to the tireless work of Mestre Pastinha and Mestre Bimba, who established the first formal academies in the 1930's.
