As a kid I used to sketch a lot with pencil and then with black ink. My dad was always telling me STOP doing black and white and practice colour. Now I am sure I know that he was telling me exactly what you do with gouache! Rip dad, you were always right! Thank you Paolo Rivera for your inspiring videos! 🎨😷😎🌞🦉🏊♂️

I don’t know if it’s more amazing: A- your art B-being able to watch your process. Or C- the very few likes a video like this have. Thank you very much for letting us scope into your studio. You are one of the great comic book artist right now. Please keep up your great work!

Absolutely fabulous! As usual. I don't have the patience or talent to do what you do but I sure enjoy watching you do it. Unrelated note, I was watching your studio tour video from right before you left New York. I really liked your Safco art storage cabinet, I followed the link to your blog for further description. Unfortunately it has been discontinued, I couldn't believe how hard it is to find it or something comparable. I wasted several hours, checked everything from Amazon and eBay to liquidation office furniture sites, nothing. There's a ton of new and used large drafting flat file cabinets, but that's kinda overkill. I finally quit after I got a headache. Anyway, yours is pretty neat and now very hard, if not downright impossible to find.

Thanks! And that stinks about the cabinet. There is a good alternative, but it's more of an investment: www.sears.com/craftsman-26inch-5-drawer-open-till-heavy-duty/p-A022543902?rrec=true

How much this consumed in real time Mr.Rivera?I mean just phases visibly worked on in this video.You seems as very quick working artist judging fom that marvelous ocean of artworks you constantly expand.

It took 2 hours to pencil, and 7.5 hours to paint. I'm definitely not fast by industry standards, but if I know what I'm doing, I can paint at a decent rate. Thanks for the kind words!

So you did a first pass in acryla gouache like a grisaille and then went over it with full color? Interesting. Have you ever tried a pick out technique, like Thomas Blackshear does?
@PaoloRivera
5 жыл бұрын
Yep, saved the full color for last. I try to anticipate the final color in the underpainting, like using burnt sienna for the red parts, but burnt umber for the blue. And yes, I do sometimes pick out paint, but probably not as much as Blackshear does. I actually don't like Acryla as much as regular gouache, but it's the only thing that will stick to thees blasted sketch covers :)

This has seriously been copied from Alex Ross style!..surely a Professional Artist shouldn't be copying another artists style!.

get your eyes checked. Alex is not the only one painting in gouache...

He's not copying, you can't copy an old technique--like paint mediums, techniques are free use for all. He's using a value underpainting, just as Alex Ross uses, and that's been done by Old Masters from centuries ago--Alex Ross didn't invent it himself. I use value underpaintings (Grisaille) a lot as well on my channel and in my work, and I learned them via Old Masters techniques and Masters Studies.

Alex Ross has always been a huge influence on me, but if anyone's being copied here, it's Jack Kirby :)
